You should continue that research and see tesla are now putting in LFP batteries with NO colbalt and NO nickel.

Not sure what colbolt is though.......never seen that in a battery

And if you're intending to get yourself a Tesla 'to be green', have a squint at the above table which describes the Carbon Intensity of the National Grid as of five minutes ago. As we go into another cold spell, the wind has gone AWOL (again!). We're burning tonnes of gas & ancient coal stations are being fired up in case they're needed.

In the worst case, the Carbon Intensity is 411 gCO2/kWh. If your EV's doing 3 miles (4.82 km) per kWh, you're emitting a minimum of 85 gCO2/km. Factor in grid distribution losses (9%) & EV battery charging losses (16%) & this rises to 111 gCO2/km. A Yaris petrol-hybrid does 88 gCO2/km.
    jrw's avatar
305 as I'm in London but charged outside......

    3.7miles per kwh. 82.43g Co2/km.

Better than a Yaris and I'm not polluting cities and towns. That's without factoring in the zero carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and any other particulate matter out of the exhaust.

And this is just one day they've warmed up the coal just in case. What about the other 350+ days a year when they aren't.

Such an inane rhetoric yet again.

Chatting to a mate who's a car dealer. Said impossible to get underwritten insurance wise, also if you have a headlight bulb go for instance they are £2k to replace as you need to replace entire headlight.
    qazim's avatar
Thats the same with all cars with Bi-Xenon or Matrix headlights. You cannot change bulbs.
  4. beaufinder1's avatar
Ridiculous price who can afford these.
    jrw's avatar
    Same as any car?

Find a car of the same spec for cheaper than this......

My mate had a Tesla for a few months. In the bad weather it could lose lose half a battery charge in 24 hrs. It’s possible his may have been faulty but that’s pretty bad. If possible best to keep it in a garage I suppose.

Mine is on carpark I holiday inn. Its -2c here and snowing. I parked up with 54%. I've woken up this morning and it's on 54%

There seem to be a few EV zealots on here that seem intent on trying to shout-down anyone with a different opinion
State your point but do it politely.

I have an Ioniq 5 on order but only because of the 2% BIK.
EV's & ICE both have pros & cons, neither is a panacea.
    Joe90_guy's avatar
My lad should be getting his EV6 this month (on lease, not bought outright). Yes he wanted an EV but without a doubt it's the tax status that swung it for him. Doing the lease via a salary sacrifice scheme is worth a lot of dosh by if you're on a six figure salary. Normally I'd disapprove but as he saves lives, he gets a pass.

Not surprised they're slow to sell….TESLAS aren't the most stylish cars but the model Y is offensively ugly..
    TeamMCS's avatar
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the M3 or Y. That said there's a rumoured facelift, hopefully they drop the stupid fish front end. I find it a bit odd Tesla didn't just shrink the Model S which is a gorgeous car imo. My only theory is it was intentional to create a gap between the various models, you don't want S buyers leaving money on the table by selling them a 3 etc
  8. majortom's avatar
Before spending this sort of money on a car I'd need to trust the following:
    1. Elon Musk
    2. The UK Government's policy towards encouraging electric cars
    3. The future of electric cars versus other eco-friendly engines
    4. Tesla's support for the future

Not quite there for me yet on any of them

The new EV BMWs look class! Glad to see they’re keeping the classic style but making them electric. I always wondered why they thought they had to redesign
    jrw's avatar
And herein lies the issue - they're based on an ICE chassis. Still has a trans tunnel protuding into the cabin. Slow and inefficient.
  10. tallphilc's avatar
EV still flawed. Brick batteries in 5 years so they just becomes obsolete and useless as no way will people replace the batteries. Not enough metals to go into every car. lithium, graphite, copper, nickel all in deficit and inflationary commodities. Hydrogen Combustion engine and Hydrogen fuel cell is the only way to go….
    jrw's avatar
Those batteries with an 8yr warranty?
  11. Johnathon_Loran's avatar
The future is hydrogen, it’s already being tested and is the long term route the motor industry will go. It’s merely a matter of time..
    c.grex's avatar
Been around 12 years in cars and we are no nearer. Around 12k sold world wide in that time. EVs in the UK for just last 3 months of 2022 was more than 190k sales.
Hydrogen doesn’t sound like the future of cars to me?
  12. Honestreviewer1's avatar
Aren’t car manufacturers now developing hydrogen engines as the new future rather than EV
    gg1pl's avatar
No as producing hydrogen is an inefficient waste of energy that could be used to produce electricity instead

That's why there's only 11 hydrogen sites of which 2-3 are for consumer use

Hydrogen stations also face even greater infrastructure problems than EVs, transporting and storing hydrogen is much more expensive and complicated than electricity

Any car park, building, even lamp posts can cheaply add EV charging points. Impossible with hydrogen (edited)
  13. Oldfourfinger's avatar
Honestly please do note if you actually DO have an EV whilst giving negatives. I’m on my second EV and I would never go back to ICE. Current car ID3 range 330 also. Range is king
    jrw's avatar
Course they don't. They just read the express and mail.

Whilst I believe that's a contributing factor, the real answer is the upcoming highland refresh. The same discounts were applied when a new model was on the horizon.

Not to say the current gen isn't awesome, you should consider whether the refresh will overly devalue your current vehicle and if those changes are going to trigger buyers remorse. Imo, I'd wait till we get a date for the new models. MCU4, radar, additional and improved cameras etc etc.

HW4 started rolling out on S and X but software is not compatible yet. Don't you think Highland is referring to Model 3 and will take atleast 6 months to roll out?

Model 3 facelift may start appearing globally but HW4 will exclusively for US in my opinion due to FSD.

Be aware, with RWD MODEL Y you barely will get 200 miles

mines currently done barely 160 on full charge with no ac/heated seats or steering
    49765095-fO0eU.jpg
    jrw's avatar
You are averaging 3.6miles per kwh......in the winter.......in a biggish SUV with 340bhp.

Usable battery is 57.5kwh. This gives a range on your Avg. Energy of 206miles.

You say no AC but you have the temp set to Manual 22.5c. You are better off setting it to Auto and forgetting about it. Heated seats and wheel are preferable to the climate control too. I use both and have been averaging 3.8m/kwh in my Model 3 Dual Motor so 3.6 in a Y is very good.

To put that into perspective an ICE SUV with that sort of power would be around 30mpg if you are lucky (more like 25).......so that would cost you 23p per mile if Petrol is £1.50 a litre.

If you charged exclusively on superchargers at 40p per kwh it would cost you 11p per mile. If you charge at home at 10p per kwh it would cost you 2.7p per mile.

So at least half the cost of a petrol SUV plus the range will increase as the weather warms up.

Awful looking cars and not a great investment. Also the damage to the environment puts me right off the idea
    cava83's avatar
Typically a car is not an investment. However some might enjoy driving such a car as it's also good for entertainment i.e audio is good, has netflix and other stuff, which is good and thus, it could be seen as an investment to someone's happiness/wellbeing, but same could be said about driving any car to be honest. Everything sadly damages the environment, which isn't an excuse, batteries you're using at home (as an example) to the food you buy in the supermarket, to anything you have really at your house. Sad really

Tesla are really outdated and one of the ugliest cars on the road at the moment. The inside is drab too. Just look at the electric Porsche Taycan which not only looks gorgeous but does 350 miles and is stunning inside & out. Personally I wouldn’t have another Tesla if you paid me. Porsche maybe a tad more expensive but the difference is night & day. It’s sexy, fast and both the build quality and resale value far exceed Tesla.
    bellboys's avatar
Every time you see the words 'tad more expensive' on here you just know the reality is going to be twice as expensive

Can’t believe every time something like this is posted all you see is a bunch of adults arguing with each other over what they prefer, it’s like those kids who argue over their favourite superhero or favourite console.
    BallOfDuty's avatar
I think it’s safe to say people just have different preferences, no one knows what the future holds, this deal is relevant to only those interested in maybe switching to EV.

I don't understand why some people seem so threatened by EVs. What are they scared of? NO government will hit its target for eradicating ICE cars; they'll just get near the deadline and move it. If you don't want an EV, don't buy one. Simples

The future isn’t electric, it’s petrol hybrid or hydrogen.

And the UK is blinkered when they say only battery, they need to widen their perspective. UK car industry hitting 55 year low for car production, because we have no battery expertise, they’re shooting themselves in the foot.

They need to drive hydrogen as an alternative.

10p overnight, but what's the daily cost on this tariff
  29. XNET's avatar
Lots of snoberry going on here, the fact is electric cars are more expensive than ice cars, lots of people cannot afford to change their cars due to cost of living, for those who can afford it don't be nasty to those who can't afford these cars, and what's the point of high power when most city roads are 20mph?, come on tell me why you need these horse powers, not to mention raw materials

Since the pandemic the car shortage made quite a few people think they're Mike Brewer, but supply is now catching up with demand.
  31. Louis_4j8's avatar
Y seems like an appropriate name for the model.

"Y does it look like that?"
  32. GenuWhine's avatar
Ugly cars, Elon has zero style points on Teslas, perhaps this should have been called the Boring company v2.
There is a poor effort on any exterior styling, just drab looking and only 331 miles, yet they have the audacity to called it a "long range" model.... pathetic
    cava83's avatar
The exterior is designed for low drag. 331 miles, do you know any other EV that stipulate 331 and call that short range? Admittedly you won't get that but nonetheless, even though he's weird, he's done a lot, launched a car business and created a big wedge, that's not pathetic :-)
  33. Galo's avatar
Guess that’s what happens when Elon insults the majority of his customers. Supply and demand baby.
    warriorscot's avatar
It's more supply not demand, they've been building up production capacity and updating the older lines so they're getting a big productivity surge.

I haven't seen anything showing demand for new Teslas has done anything but increase with the dropping prices.
  34. nevergofull's avatar
The intorduction of BIK on full EV's already gives an indication as to where the government see the taxation of these vehicles.
Imagine the loss to the coffers when people are no longer buying petrol and paying the huge levies on it.

The profits from fuelling the motor vehicles will move to the privatley owned energy providers.

Anyone who thinks that there will not be a way to plug this void is foolish.

I do see the benefit of EV's, and I am not adverse to them. However, give us the option, 'forcing' them on people, by restricting the purchase of petrol cars does not sit well with me.
    Tech_Geek's avatar
They will likely be still sold just like cigarettes are, 5 times more expensive and not allowed to drive them in town.

The reason why there is more stock is because Tesla export the majority of their vehicles to Europe from their Shanghai factory in the last month of each quarter. Model Y will likely be the best selling car in the Uk this year. (edited)

I saw that the prices had fallen further but that's not the case on the website.

Additionally on Friday a performance model (new Inventory) was 2-4 weeks, now it's months away.

I loved my Model 3, sure it wasn't perfect but I really enjoyed it. None of my cars have ever been perfect, they all have good and bad parts so to speak.

I think I'd enjoy a Model Y but for some reason the performance model looks so much nicer but I'd change the wheels.
