Is there any scientific evidence this is different to regular salt?

Himalayan salt contains about 97% sodium chloride and the other 3% is made up with around 87 trace minerals. Some of these minerals are needed by the body for various reasons and even though they are in tiny amounts are beneficial.

Table salt is 97-99% sodium chloride and the rest being made up by a flow agent. The flow agents used are not beneficial to health as far as I know and may be flouride based which some people are sensitive to.

The 3% of beneficial minerals extracted from himalayan salt end up in foods like fortified breakfast cereals and health supplements and other products.

I make a himalayan salt brine by putting a kilo of HS in a 5 litre kilner drinks dispenser and topping it up with distilled water. After a couple of days the water goes clear and the impurities settle on the bottom. I then use the clear brine to season water for cooking rice, pasta and vegetables, they taste much better than using table salt and I'm adding trace minerals to the food. I could use maldon or Celtic sea salt but they cost a lot more.

I also make a kind of sole water by putting a bit of the brine in a 2 litre bottle of sparkling water and it is delicious. Tastes just like vichy catalan which is a spanish sparkling water. Give it a try!

Yep, that's the one. But apparently it has an exotic name and colour so it must be better.

The blurb/selling point as I remember was that this salt started out obviously at sea level and over millions of years rose with the Himalayas. So it's ancient salt free from modern impurities. I'll leave that one for you to decide

Recently new research came out that boiling tap water with table salt produces harmful and potentially cancerous substance. Will leave it here for those that would be bothered by it and wish to change their way. Himalayan salt is one of the alternatives that apparently does not cause this reaction.

Wow, it's not many times that Home Bargains are cheaper than farmfoods as the kg of Himalayan were recently on sale at ff for 99p. Now ff have Maldon sea salt for 99p. No doubt Nepal and others who share the mountain range would sell it all if they could get 89 or 99 p per kg. Thames Estuary evaporites??? Not so sure................

Even if it was free and delivered to my door, it would still be a waste of space in my bin until the council collects it on Wednesday morning.

At least the council would get use of it putting in those bins at the end of roads for when it's icy (edited)

TIL that people still use "table salt".

Buy some normal good quality rock salt for your grinder, stop trying to be cheap, and eat more nutrient dense food once in a while like fatty fish or lamb.

This would be exceptionally cheap even for rock salt, you're asking for trouble thinking that the supposedly more "premium" himalayan salt could be anywhere close to being this price.

Oh and a side note, actual himilayan vs normal rock salts show that there's a tiny difference between them. It's essentially a marketing scam, as with all "fad" products.

Again, if you actually want the benefits that the minerals found in TRACE amount in these salts bring, eat some real meat and green veg. Otherwise it's just as effective as wrapping a chicken nugget in lettuce and thinking you're a healthy boi. (edited)

If anyone is buying 1kg of salt for cooking then it should last them 5-7 years surely?

If you put this in a glass jar next to a light it gives off Himalayan Spectral Pinkeye Light which is said to cleanse the soul, clear the mind and help house plants extract all impurities from the air.

    Thanks OP.
