WHAT IS A FREE HEALTH MOT AND WHERE IS THIS AVAILABLE?
Here at Boots, we believe everyone's health is individual to them. In the UK there are thought to be around 5 million adults who have high blood pressure without knowing it.

If you are aged 40 or older, live in England, and have no previous diagnosis of high blood pressure, you can book an appointment with an in-store pharmacist today*. You may also be eligible if you’ve been referred by your GP to have a blood pressure check, or if you’re under 40 with a recognised family history of high blood pressure – at the discretion of the pharmacist.

Each appointment lasts 15 mins. There will be a blood pressure check service, with GP referral if needed, an optional BMI and waist circumference measurement, guidance on exercise, nutrition, sleep, mental wellbeing and smoking, alongside any further personalised recommendations needed.

At the end of their appointment, patients get a booklet on healthy lifestyles with their results included.

Running until the end of June, people can book in for their free 15 minute health check with a pharmacist across 1,000 branches.

The MOT aims to help the nation address issues such as high blood pressure while also offering advice to aid wellbeing.

An estimated six to eight million people are living with undiagnosed or uncontrolled high blood pressure and if left unchecked, it can lad to heart attacks, heart disease and strokes – but it rarely has noticeable symptoms

HOW THE SERVICE WORKS

Book your appointment

Book your FREE Health MOT online or in-store. Find a store that offers the FREE Health MOT by visiting our store locator & selecting 'pharmacy services'

Attend your appointment in-store

During the 15-minute appointment, the pharmacist will take your blood pressure and offer to calculate your BMI, using your height & weight measurements, and the option of measuring your waist circumference

Receive expert advice

Following your health check, the pharmacist will offer you advice and provide you with a leaflet with your results

Not overly surprised there. Boots are an American-owned company.

BMI is not a measure of health.

Nor directly is waist measurement, but both can be used as indicators of health when compared to other factors. It is however great that they are running this free service, which anyone that’s had recent experience with our negligent GP service, would have to agree is a good thing.

I've recently had a full health check, was surprised how much in depth they go with their blood tests.

I've had all my results uploaded to our GPs app so still reading up on all of them and comparing my results.

you can do all this yourself,
forget bmi,but for a man if your belly button circumference is more than 40 inches
or 30 inches around the hips for a woman.
this is a good indicator of where you are at. (edited)

One reading of blood pressure in a setting you are not used to is not the best way to gauge, well anything. With blood pressure, you need to get multiple readings in the settings you are used to.

One of the main things people can get is 'white coat syndrome' which causes the blood pressure to rocket in certain settings such as medical establishments, or you might be feeling stressed or anxious that day anyway.

Mine rockets if I'm in a doctors or hospital but is "Optimal" at home. (edited)

LOL, all that a regular 100 IQ bloke could do without going outside.

Would love blood test, urine test, and DNA test for potential cancer risk.

If the NHS did stuff like this I’m sure they’d save money in the long run by identifying issues before they’ve advanced

Spend some time walking around nursing homes and then you will forget about living to an old age. It's not great, getting your undercarriage wiped by a random, and eating liquidised food whilst the doctor visits on the tax payer every week to pump you with drugs to keep you a burden.

    Enjoy life and die younger.

Spent 4 days in hospital and the entire ward was elderly patients, and yeh I know what you mean.

It's very true - live for the day and enjoy life the best you can, while you can, because things can change just like that.

I recently had an telephone consultation with my GP who wanted a recent blood pressure reading before he prescribed medication to me. It was quicker and more convenient for me to visit my very local Boots where the pharmacist took 3 readings before a quick telephone call to surgery to give results for GP's attention. My prescription was then sent back to Boots and I picked up the medication. All done on a Friday afternoon. It saved me worries about appointments in the overbusy surgery and I got urgently needed treatment. I'd recommend Boots.

BP machine is a must have in all households IMHO. You don't need a pharmacist to check your BP. It is a good investment. Buy once and it will serve you and your family for many years.

Thanks, I agree. I do have one but I wanted reassuring that I was using it correctly as the instructions weren't brilliantly clear. It was good to have someone who had been trained to do a test.

Do they check your under chassis for cracks and leaks? If you fail are you allowed to go home or do you have to stay there while they fix you?

The sad thing is this is money from the NHS being given to private companies to do what your surgery should do.

it’s fine, we all agreed to privatisation when we booted….voted

Had to go private I wasn't 40 but its nice to have an MOT just incase. Never know what underlying issues could be in your body and you are not aware of it.

You can get this done at any pharmacy in England. They are advertising it at this as they claim around £!8 from the government for each blood pressure they take of someone over 40.

I don't need Boots to confirm I'm fat and unhealthy, and I don't need them patronising me into buing their 'health' products by a fat Gen Z that can't get their Tik-tok account a blue tick.

But being fat and unhealthy is the only affordable retirement plan.

Can't imagine being 70+ and still having to work. Rather pop my clogs early enjoying wine, cheese and other nice drugs.

All they're doing is a blood pressure test, which anyone can do themselves.
