About this deal
This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:
Mysteriously transported from New York City, Frey Holland finds herself trapped in the breathtaking land of Athia. A magical, sentient bracelet is inexplicably wrapped around her arm, and Frey discovers the ability to cast powerful spells and use magic to traverse the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Frey nicknames her new golden companion “Cuff” and sets off to find a way home. Frey soon learns this beautiful land once flourished under the reign of benevolent matriarchs, called Tantas, until a devastating blight relentlessly corrupted everything it touched. The Break transformed animals into beasts, men into monsters, and rich landscapes into four dangerous realms. At the center of their shattered domains, the Tantas now rule as maddened and evil sorceresses. Unaffected by the Break and desperate for answers, Frey reluctantly agrees to help the last remaining citizens of Athia who see her as their only hope. Frey’s journey through this strange and treacherous land will take her deep into the heart of corruption where she must battle monstrous creatures, confront the powerful Tantas, and uncover secrets that awaken something much more from within.

Negatives first - Dialogue was....fine. Had there not been furore about it before it's release, I wouldn't have picked it out of any other number of games. Honestly, I can think of only a handful of games that has exceptionally GOOD dialogue? Most are passable at best.
Story is fine. On a par with maybe 80% of other games you will play.
Maybe the worst part for me was that in the 'city', you are slowed to a light run. After blasting full pelt over a map, it can be jarring.
Positives - The main core of the game play (ye know, the reason you play a game?) was great for me! It's slow to get a new set of spells, but once you do, the game really opens up. Probably standard enough stuff, some enemies more susceptible to different attacks etc. But they look fantastic, they are varied in attacks, there are plenty of moves and jumping between magics is seamless. Pretty solid unlock/upgrade system too.
The map is huge and the parkour for travelling about is really well implemented. Visually it reminded me of Elden Ring (ER = prettier, but in terms of physicality, sheer cliffs etc). Plus the speed you rattle through the place, I can see why it's not JUST as detailed.
There is not much variety in what to do, but there is still lots to do, and I found it very moreish to blast from one place to the next, either unlocking a refuge, collecting orbs for upgrading, fighting a mutant just over the hill etc.
It's not a GOTY contender. It was never going to be. But I'll also never fathom the hate it got on release because to me, it was a solid 7.5 game. A lot of fun to play, and that's whats important.
But yeah, if you only play GOTY contenders then by all means, enjoy your 2 or 3 games a year
I played 5 minutes of the demo, that was enough for me.
You should give it a try at about £15. You might be surprised how good it is.
