I recently decided to give it a try and it's painfully boring. It's less of a survival horror and more like a linear walking simulator with a light sprinkling of dull enemies. (And I say that as a definite negative here when I actually really enjoy walking simulators.)
Once it quickly clicks that's what the game is there's no tension or anything to push you forward, especially because it feels like they put all the story build up in the prologue then didn't bother with it, instead thinking that simply having to escape the prison with a few vague mysterious points dropped in would be enough of a motivator to keep pushing you forward to walk through more corridors, bash a couple of enemies then push a button and repeat.
The strong feeling I got overall through a lot of design choices in the game is that it feels like a game that was designed and released on Xbox 360 to middling review scores and this is the same game years later but with just remastered graphics and not like a game that was just recently made.
Dead Space Remake over this all day long.
