This seems like a bargain... We have a Meaco Zambezi but we could get two of these for one of those and it's twice the extraction per unit... Are those numbers real world as that's seriously good extraction rate?
    JoeSchmo's avatar
    JoeSchmo
Your Meaco Zambezi is a desiccant type dehumidifier and this one is compressor type. The main difference is that desiccant dehumidifiers extract the around the same amount of moisture at any temperature above 1c, while the compressor type becomes less efficient when dropping below 20c-15c and has very poor extraction until it stops extracting moisture when reaching 5c

However desiccants use over double the electricity than compressors do and in higher temperatures (15 to 30 Celsius) compressors are way more efficient and will extract more moisture for less electricity. But in a conservatory, garage, or basement where it’s a lot colder, desiccants work better. (edited)

How much does it cost to run per hour, does anyone know please?

I've been running one of these with an power monitor plug on it for a few years. Normal state with fan on high and compressor running uses about 220W (7.48p per hour). Laundry mode (which puts everything on full blast) uses approx 275W (9.35p per hour).

sust-it.net/ene…php is good for power calcs btw.

Have had this model now for 2 years and very pleased with it. I use it with a smart plug. I set the timer to start in whatever hours and then the smart plug to turn off at a certain time. I run mine for 4-5 hours during the night on the landing, no condensation on windows, heats at the same time too. Looking to buy another for the downstairs.

Laundry mode is ok, I find that it will dry the clothes facing it but not the other side, I usually have to turn the clothes round to dry the other side.

Does this model work with a smart plug ? A comment below says it doesn’t. Many Thanks.

Just a public service announcement. Make sure to remove the strip of tape that's inside the water collection tub. Other wise the floaty bit doesn't float when it's full and it doesn't turn off, meaning it keeps running 🙈
    cannrobe's avatar
    cannrobe
Also might be worth reading the instructions too. As I just took all the tape off outside and used it for a couple of hours, then when I went to empty it out, realised the castors were in the water collection tub .

Is this a compressor model that only works at higher temperatures, or a dessicant one that works at low temperatures?
    smephone's avatar
    smephone
Its a compressor model, but I wouldn't get too hung up on the temperature benefits of desiccant for normal household use.

I've got both a compressor and a desiccant. The compressor is more than capable for normal drying/laundry etc., even though we don't use the heating (temps in the house currently around 15C).

The desiccant is great for the very damp cold cellar, or drying out plastered/ flooded rooms quick etc. But it uses loads of electric, and puts out lots of heat.

We’ve got dehumidifiers in every bedroom. Dry the rooms during the day and turn off at night.

The Health benefits have been significant. Asthma better, not chesty in mornings and hardly any colds.

I honestly think the medical community are missing a trick by not prescribing them. Someone needs to do the research!

    We use Ecoair. (edited)

Is there something wrong with your house as having a dehumidifier in each bedroom would suggest so? Open the windows for 30 minutes in the morning and let the fresh air in. (edited)

Most recent review below. Thanks OP, but I think I'll look again at other manufacturers.

    I regret buying this
I purchased this some time ago. First the positives: it removes water from the air. Since this is its purpose it’s a good start!

Now the not so good: you can’t start it with a smart plug since it needs a button pushing. The “timer” is only to turn it off in 1/2/3 hours etc so you can’t have it come on in off peak, and it uses a decent bit of electric. Worse, it randomly shoots out quite large amounts of water from underneath. It does this totally at random - regardless of whether it’s almost full, recently emptied, etc - and nothing I’ve done has managed to stop this. Lastly its’ humidity reading can be somewhat odd. I’ve put it in the shower room after my teenager has been in there for an hour. Steam billows out, water dripping down the walls. Apparently it’s only 50% humidity so it won’t turn on automatically and I have to fiddle with the override. I have another thermometer/hygrometer in there that’s reading 90% or higher but not the dehumidifier.

Personally I’d say try a different brand. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to clean up the puddle its just left on the floor

Great dehumidifier for normal household use. Make sure you keep the back filter clean. I disassemble and clean out the heat exchanger on mine every summer, but I am a massive geek, not really needed.

We put ours on the upstairs landing, and have a pulley clothes drying rack hung on the ceiling above. We dry clothes there during the day (by closing all the doors and hot boxing it, and use it at evening/night to keep a handle on moisture from bathing and sleeping.

We put ours on top of a small set of drawers, makes it much easier to pull out and empty the water tub.

If it broke, I'd buy the same model again. (edited)

Needs to be a good 10-12 hours to totally dry laundry. We tend to use it overnight and 5 mins in dryer to finish off. Amazing how much water you get out of these things.

Dehumidifier are great for help drying washing if have a laundry mode on them. Have had one for years (20L one), never had a tumble dryer so can't compare. Although people do say driers are expensive to run.

As Which magazine say, don't worry about choosing one that doesn't have a laundry mode if it is otherwise decent, since all it is, is a way of putting everything to max, which you can normally do manually anyway. (edited)

Best to spend a bit more on a Meaco, it will pay for itself due to ultra low energy usage.
    Rano_Linst's avatar
    Rano_Linst
this one uses around 230W/hour but is a 16L machine.
    Meaco 12L uses 155W/hour.
So volume vs W/hour they're about the same.
    16/230 = 0.07
    12/155 = 0.0775

So meaco is 10% more efficient.

Just ordered one, thanks. These are great for drying clothes. One thing to note, generally it takes less time to heat your home if the moisture levels are lower = lower gas bill. Yes I know you use electricity to run this thing but in general it pays for itself. (edited)

I bought one of these on eBay, refurbished and ever so slightly cheaper. I would say the noise and filter cleans are worth the improvement in 'heat feel' for my property, and certainly a saving for my economy 7 heated home; 7kWh avoided to date. Overall, a great device to run most of the day (in different rooms). It will even dry laundry and your dishes as you heat and dry your home. I'm very happy so far with this make and model, but you shouldn't expect to collect a tank in 2 hours. For me, its roughly 8-12 hours depending on if I've had a shower! It's all about savings at this time (of year)!

These are really good and much better looking than most others. Best used with a separate hygrometer. We turn this on overnight when indoor humidity gets above 60% and it helps to bring it back down. If you have a clothes horse out on a damp day then you can really see the humidity shoot up to high 60s which you really don't want so this will help manage that.

Got this yesterday, ran it overnight on small room with laundry half damped, 8 hour time filled up almost full 2.4ltr tank.
First impression is positive. Clothes also almost dried up completely.
Energy monitor shows a little higher than expected usage but far far lower than running tumble dryer.

Good deal this for the size and spec. Been looking for one and was waiting for a deal to come up. Think it will do the job nicely.

Will be using this to aid laundry drying over the winter. Will have laundry on a close horse, radiator on to warm the air, fan on to circulate the air and dehumidifier on to take the moisture out the air.

    Thanks for posting :-) (edited)

On a serious note, this has a fan at the top and a swinging flap. Not gonna be as good circulating compared to a fan but you may still be able to omit the fan in your plan. (edited)

Dehumidifiers are amazing. Ours dries laundry in 2-4 hours. Use one of the old style cloths airers that you can stand in a square around the dehumidifier then when all the clothes are hung toss a sheet/tablecloth over the lot. We got it when our tumble dryer broke down, so much cheaper to run. Also put it on a low setting in cool weather and house feels warm without needing to put the heating on.

I am not very happy with the noise levels actually. We placed it in the landing, and once tv is off and kids are asleep; the humming noise from the dehumidifier is not bearable. Hope I haven’t got a lemon that hums more than others. Any experiences anyone?

Snap!. I have 2 of these from Screwfix bought at the same price as you paid. Unfortunately, at one point they were selling for £79 but I digress. It does the job and I really like the castors on the machine should you wish to put it in another room. They were purchased to replace a Delonghi that was 14 years old and had never missed a beat. They were more money than the Screwfix model but they are definitely better. In my case, it was, without a doubt, you get what you pay for.

First time user of dehumidifier so don't know what to expect really, purchase is mainly for drying laundry in small room as due to weather, its taking days to get 2 loads dried up. Let's see how this fairs to it. (edited)

I'm not surprised they've been snapped up tbh, the amount of posts I see on energy saving/general household Facebook groups of people asking about dehumidifiers is huge. Lots of people using them to avoid heating the house so much, or avoid using the more expensive tumble dryer etc. Plenty of other places are sold out.

We find ours perfect for drying in a small room. Before this our laundry would take ages to dry and start to smell.

My car leaked recently during a rainstorm and the floor carpet and sound insulation got very wet. The source of leak has been resolved (was some blocked drain channel) but the inside of the car still has moisture. Would this be suitable to be run on an extension lead into the car to dehumidify the interior carpet etc?

I had the same problem. I used a wet and dry vac to remove the worst of it and a dehumidifier for the rest. In all honesty, the wet vac was probably only required as the carpets were literally drenched so depending on severity, may not be required

I have one of these (bought from Screwfix) and it's been fine at controlling the moisture in our conservatory with temps going down to the low teens - we're running this and not the 2KW Delonghi radiator due to cheapness. Works well though it's not the quietest machine, if you're after a compressor based quiet dehumidifier I would go for the Meaco low energy range.
