If you’re aged 18 and over and eligible to work in Northern Ireland, a range of free accredited courses are available to help you re-train and re-skill, through SKILL UP – the flexible skills programme.

The Department for the Economy, with funding from the Northern Ireland Office and the Department of Finance, is supporting free short courses, delivered by the local further and higher education providers.

There are up to 7000 free places available until end of June 2023 with many more to follow in the next few years.

Opportunities are available from entry to postgraduate levels, focusing on skills identified by industry, linked to priority economic sectors, including:

  • digital skills
  • green technologies
  • healthcare and life sciences
  • advanced manufacturing
  • leadership and management

Most courses will be delivered online and will provide an opportunity to re-skill and upskill into areas where job growth is expected to be high as we emerge from the impact of coronavirus.

I personally completed an OU course in June 2022 and am currently doing another at QUB. Very worthwhile in my opinion if you have the time and are motivated. Some of the courses are PgCert which could take you approximately half way to an MSc but you will likely need to pay for the remaining modules.

You need to apply directly to the university or college. There's links to each of them on the nidirect web page.

It seems not. The links I clicked on had additional criteria:

To be eligible for a fully funded place you must be:

    • domiciled in Northern Ireland
    • eligible to work in Northern Ireland
    • settled in Northern Ireland, and ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years or have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
    • over 18 years of age

They also they say they want proof of address.

I see these every year and wonder how good the courses are, especially the digital ones as I've worked in this area for nearly 20 years.

I hope they are good because since moving back here I find digital awareness and knowledge to be very low here compared to other countries I've lived and worked in. (edited)

Your learning experience will depend on the course, the school, the lecturers and the content that they deliver. Personally, I've found that the course content and delivery can be patchy, some modules good whereas others not so much. It is accredited though and for reference, international MSc students in my class are paying around £25k for it. I think you just need to do your research before applying.

Seems like, if you've a UK passport, all you need to do is register an address in N. I and show some ki d of proof. So a hotel and a 24hour address change?

While most of the learning can be done remotely, some of the courses on offer will have you attend classes or assessments in person. (edited)
