The £2 cap on bus fares has been extended for three months following warnings that hundreds of services could be cut if it ended.

The cap applies to more than 130 bus operators outside London.

It had been due to expire on 31 March, but has been extended until the end of June.

Bus operators have been struggling to maintain service levels in the face of rising costs and passenger numbers not recovering to pre-pandemic levels.

The cap was introduced partly as a cost of living measure but is also meant to encourage people back on to buses.

"Getting more people onto reliable and affordable buses will strengthen communities and help grow the economy," said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Up to 15% of services could have been scrapped without further funding, the Confederation of Passenger Transport, which represents bus and coach firms, said earlier this month.

During the pandemic, the government provided £2bn to support bus firms, who provide the most popular form of public transport in England.

The government said the extension for bus fares would be backed by up to £75m in funding.

The cities of Manchester, Liverpool and West Yorkshire - all of which have Labour mayors - have already introduced £2 caps as part of longer-term schemes.

The government said a further £80m would be made available to support critical bus services in England, as part of a wider package.

"We're providing £155m to help passengers save money on fares, get more people on the bus and protect vital bus routes - helping with the cost of living and enabling people to get where they need to in an affordable and convenient way," said Transport Secretary Mark Harper.

    one thing to note,
I normally get a return ticket into into town because it is a bit cheaper £3.80 instead of the £2 each way. BUT for over a month non of the bus drives will issue you/sell a return ticket. i think the bus drivers have been told to not issue/sell return tickets on the local short rides making us pay the max £2 each way price.

Probably bus company making more profit that way, and I'm not talking about 20p. If single ticket is for example £3, you're paying £2 and government extra £1, so both ways company gets £6 instead of £3.80

Permanent in the Liverpool City Region: merseytravel.gov.uk/bus/2-pound-bus-fare/

Plus, we now have daily and weekly caps if paying with the same debit/credit card. Arriva anyway, not sure about Stagecoach. (edited)

You don’t need to wear masks anywhere in the country thank goodness, since August 2021. This includes all public transport (edited)

A full tank costs around £50 for me. That’ll usually get me at least 300 miles. That works out around 17p a mile. I’m sorry but you’re not going to get me to swap to a bus when a car is faster, cheaper and more reliable. I don’t think £2 for a single is cheap at all.

So you must have one of those cars that doesn't depreciate, nor require servicing, insurance, tax, tyres or an MOT.

    Nice one

Not much good to me, they just cancelled the last regular bus to my village.

Similar for me, the bus route around our village has changed/reduced, no buses after 6pm, plus last time I tried to catch one home from bus station it didn't even turn up, so had to catch a different bus to next town, then get a taxi rest of journey, would happily use the bus more if there was the opportunity!

How does it work, a bus fare is £1.65 to travel then £1.65 to return so will I get charged £2.00 or the £3.30 that I was charged today

The cap is per journey, not for a return trip.

Interesting, so made me go and look up why some companies didn't sign up to this voluntary scheme.

Something which I didn't see in the big headlines, or mentioned by politicians in those interviews they love to give when giving out good news (maybe I missed it) is that the government only pays 80% of the cost to the bus company, not 100% (so if a single ticket is £3, and capped at £2, the bus company will be getting 80p back from the government and "losing" the other 20p). So they need to have sufficient extra journeys to make it pay for them. (edited)

That's absolutely great that we have some support with public transport, but I think it should be more thoroughly thinked.

For example on some occasions you can save 75% of journey fee but on some 0%. Why just not to make let's say standart 50-60% off each journey?

Real live example: I with two kids have to travel to the town, single bus fare is £2.80, with discount it's £2.00 ( still extremely overpriced for a 10 minutes journey) local cab will charge £5 . So I can save money going by taxi and bus will go to the town almost empty, no logic at all. (edited)

now we need this sort of cap price for trains (obv £2 is not viable, but maybe a bit more ill take it) and hopefully the influx of people on it to go back to the office + increased income for the train workers and the UK economy is fixed. now where's my £85k consulting fee ?

    Cheers

In Wales it’s £10 one way for horse and cart now they’ve banned roads 😁

ps it needs to be £2 per family. So mums take the bus otherwise driving or taxi is cheaper. My view is trains and busses for high traffic routes should be free, but paid for via tax. That’s how you really lower pollution and congestion. (edited)

Good to know it’s being extended but still not for long enough or well enough thought out.
If you have to catch connecting buses (and return same journey) it can be cheaper to buy a day ticket so no actual saving at all.
Some of us haven’t got the luxury of being able to afford a car. No choice than to use the bus. (edited)

Used this the other day, saved a whole 50p buying two singles instead of an all day travel pass. Returns no longer exist on this crucial route.

Buses are less frequent/reliable than they were pre-pandemic. No guarantee they will actually turn up.
Doesn’t help me when I’m using them to collect/return dtr to/from ex’s which is an essential journey for me. Not just a shopping trip into town.
Bus companies should incur some sort of financial penalty if buses are cancelled/simply don’t turn up. They have a responsibility to provide scheduled bus services. (edited)

Also been on recent tfl buses and the bus driver has a habit of dumping passengers off mid-journey.

He/she then tells you to catch the bus behind whilst he/she drives off on his/her own!!
