Half-Life: Alyx

Notice: Requires a virtual reality headset. See system requirements for more information.

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival.

Review:

The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

ABOUT GAMEPLAY IN VR:

Valve’s return to the Half-Life universe that started it all was built from the ground up for virtual reality. VR was built to enable the gameplay that sits at the heart of Half-Life.

Immerse yourself in deep environmental interactions, puzzle solving, world exploration, and visceral combat.

Lean to aim around a broken wall and under a Barnacle to make an impossible shot. Rummage through shelves to find a healing syringe and some shotgun shells. Manipulate tools to hack alien interfaces. Toss a bottle through a window to distract an enemy. Rip a Headcrab off your face and throw it out the window.

COMMUNITY-BUILT ENVIRONMENTS

A set of Source 2 tools for building new levels is included with the game, enabling any player to build and contribute new environments for the community to enjoy through Half-Life: Alyx's Steam Workshop. Hammer, Valve’s level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game's virtual reality gameplay tools and components.

Worth mentioning that a recently released free VR DLC for Half Life 2 is currently one of the top rated VR games on Steam.

The reviews suggest it's surprisingly good and up there with Alyx, which is pretty surprising.

    On my 'to-play' list!

Anyone with experience of an HTC Vive VR system? I've recently acquired one but haven't had time to set it up yet. I'm assuming that I'd be able to play this?

I've got the original Vive and it plays great!

Half life complete bundle also worth it, if you’re a dinosaur that hasn’t played HL1 and 2
….. also there is a raytraced version of HL which is a must for anyone wanting to relive the original in all nice lighting glory! Available on GitHub

Surely it’s the dinosaurs that HAVE played HL1 & 2?

The best gaming experience ever made. Wireless, in the garden in a 8m x 8m space on a summers evening is something that will probably never be beaten for a generation

    Bring on summer!!!

Such a shame that this is now 3 years old and no other VR game has come close.
    crabby09's avatar
    3 years already!

I love VR, but this is the reason it's never going to go mainstream - this shouldn't still be holding the fort...

Hopefully they release it on PSVR2

I honestly don't understand why sony didn't go all out to make this happen for launch. Better money spent on that than making the horrible horizon tech demo

Played on PC with Quest 2. Honestly one of the best games I have played

Getting this tomorrow. I have quest 2 and good gaming pc. Can air link it so no cables.

on all the Alyx posts I always feel the need to say how unbelievablely amazing this game is. Of course with all good things, you can never get your first time back

If I were to buy this and an Occulus 2 set, what else would be required to play?
    stato257's avatar
    A PC.

Sooo good. The design is just so elegant, puts other VR games to shame! (edited)

    crabby09's avatar

Played this through twice now and there is nothing that compares to it in VR. Unbelievable experience.

Trouble is, most folk who already had a semi-reasonable headset already bought it a long time ago

Those lucky few not in that boat should dive on it

Bought. Unluckily I bought a HP gaming PC and an automated BIOS update from their crappy update app bricked it within 3 hours of getting it lol. Looking forward to playing it once sorted though.

Had the exact same issue a few months ago, what model omen was it?

The benchmark for VR, the game that retired my G2 and my passion for VR...it's that good, and at £19.99...madness

Get the complete valve pack for £5.32 as you get Portal 1 and Portal 2 which are classics. And if you buy Vorpx it will convert them into VR, along with Left4Dead and Left4Dead2. There are also mods for the L4D and L4D2 to convert them to VR and also a ghost busters app. So much entertainment to be had for not a lot of wonga.
    Heat added.

Half-Life: Alyx is a masterpiece, nothing comes close to it - I paid full price and it was worth every penny and more. Get a Quest 2 and you will not regret it!

Honestly jealous of all the people yet to experience this - like others have said nothing really compares... I still like playing it, but I'd love to go in with fresh eyes again. And it's really screwed my experience of everything else. Some people point at other games and claim they're as good/better, but I've tried most of them and to be honest it's not even close.
    J2022's avatar
I blame Alyx as the reason I've never completed Witcher 3 and a dozen other games.. It's like having the best steak of your life and then having to live on beans on toast.

In some ways I say don't get this, it's too good. At least finish your backlog first.
  21. ra11's avatar
I preferred it on my rift rather than quest 2 ironically
    Ray_DJ's avatar
Same, the quest 2 just doesn't feel right compared to my older rift, there's just something about the response time, the OLED displays. I wish they'd given the quest 2 a direct displayport connection, it would've made the pcvr experience a lot more enjoyable without having to deal with bad compression (edited)
  22. Sam_Clements's avatar
The half life 2 vr mod was amazing. I much prefer the movement, as going back to half life Alyx now feels so slow! It's still a really enjoyable game, and the graphics are obviously on a different level, but I think I'll have to look at some of the suggestions on Steam about speeding it up for my next play through (as I've finally got a much better graphics card!).
  23. Gaurav_Bhatnagar's avatar
The thing that makes this game a masterpiece in my opinion is the detailing in the object models and interactibility. The environment is pretty unmatched too.
Talk about the mods like gun contracts and others, this is out there at the top of VR titles even after years of release.
Must must get for PCVR capable systems.
  24. 0rchid's avatar
Great! I couldn't find my copy of Half Life (probably on a floppy disk somewhere or something) and was keen to try the new ray tracing upgrade.
  25. Robsy128's avatar
I’d love to get this, but the cost of a gaming PC and headset is astronomical. Either you all have really good jobs, or you’ve saved up a fair bit.
    Chaded's avatar
I played it on my Quest 2 via Plutosphere. A bit fiddly and temperamental at times, but totally worth the effort!
  26. crack_shot's avatar
I had zero desire to get VR until i heard there was an exclsuive half life on it

now i want one. maybe this summer- my tiny garden and a wireless set up in the summer heat sounds like a cool idea as suggested above
    Gaurav_Bhatnagar's avatar
Beware! The sunlight kills the quest 2

the only game worth buying a vr headset for....and sell it immediately after for fear of being consumed by technology
