Tempted by this but it has the same failing that my old one has, the power is controlled by a latching button rather than a slide switch so it's very likely that it will spend lots of time inadvertently switched on!!
My old one cost me a fortune in PP3's.
I'm looking at this one which as a bonus uses AAA batteries.

With little effort (and money) it could be converted to USB-C rechachargeable one.
I do this with mine (3 of them).
All you need are a couple of cheap electric components (usb-C battery charging module, boost converter 5v to 9v) an old phone mobile battery, a bit of time and very basic soldering skills. Plenty of tutorials in YouTube (such as this one:)

Random question. I have an electrical cable that loops out of the back wall of my house. I assume the previous owner planned to fit a security light, given the position and height but have no idea if the cable is ‘live’. Would this be able to tell me if it is? Through the insulating plastic, so I don’t have to turn of mains, then wire something up to know? Or is there something else I should be looking at. (edited)

Hi friends. I’ve been thinking about upping my retro console repair game and learning to solder and test traces etc which necessitates having a MM to check work. Is this the sort of general purpose multimeter that would be good for that as a beginner, or does this have a narrower, specific purpose? Cheers, sorry for vague amateur question

If it's just checking continuity, this will be perfectly fine. But if you need to measure exact currents (which I suspect you won't), I'd look at something else as the accuracy of the 20mA and 200mA resolutions aren't and it won't show the results for anything over 200mA.

This one, goes up to 10A: amazon.co.uk/dp/…5_i

It seems like it doesn't come with buzzer for continuity test. I always find "the buzzer" feature very useful.

The lidl multimeter at 9.99 is better imo, auto off and continuity test.

Is this really this price or just a Fluke?

I'd suggest splashing out an extra £6 to get an auto ranging meter like this: amzn.eu/d/aXeIPRF

They're easier to use as you don't have to understand the range setting, and I would think most people buying a very cheap multimeter aren't really interested in learning how they work!

Edit: the meter I linked is showing at £12.99 in the Amazon app for me, but £19.99 when following the link. Strange! (edited)
