The book that is providing a storm of controversy, from ‘Israel’s bravest historian’ (John Pilger)

Renowned Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.

Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing". Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. Indispensable for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

It's important to encourage balance, with such important subjects. Anyone reading this book owes it to themselves to read alternate works and the critiques to them. While bad actors try to simplify the actions of both nations, this is a very complex and difficult conflict.

The alternate perspective is the mainstream media, where Palestinians are labelled as 'militant terrorists' for defending their own homeland and trying to stop complete extermination.

Excellent book. I really enjoyed it buty wife found it a real eye opener. She was brought up Orthodox Jewish and went on the birth right visit where they said Israel was established on an empty land.

Unfortunately I think chronic misinformation on both sides has furthered the conflict for decades. This book is well sourced. Make up your own mind from the facts.

Your comment regarding what your wife was taught is interesting.

It reminds me of the Seth Rogen interview on Marc Maron's podcast a few years ago whereupon they stated they were told similar stories when growing up.

The book comes in for a fair amount of online criticism that it is factually inaccurate. So caveat emptor.

People will be voting this hot or cold based on their political or religious beliefs, rather than on the contents of the book.

Ilan Pappé, the author , freely admits that, in his view, facts are irrelevant when it comes to the history of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. “Indeed the struggle is about ideology, not about facts, Who knows what facts are? We try to convince as many people as we can that our interpretation of the facts is the correct one, and we do it because of ideological reasons, not because we are truthseekers,” Pappe said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Soir, Nov. 29, 1999.

Not a fan of books/reading but not long ago I watched a great show on Netflix called Fauda.. based in Israel and it actually taught me a lot about life over there. Highly recommended, great entertaining show. Makes me want to go visit!

If you purchase this with the same Amazon account that’s loaded on your Kindle, it should just show up as a new book you can download from your library of purchases.

Ilan Pappe is a second tier Israeli historian, who leans heavily on his first tier colleagues for the heavy lifting. While good, you can find better books on this topic; which also are all written by Jewish people eg.

The Gun and the Olive Branch - David Hirst
Image and Reality of the Israel Palestine Conflict - Norman Finkelstein
The Iron Wall - Avi Shlaim
The Palestinian People by Baruch Kimmerling (edited)

Historic facts aside. I have one question though ! When the UN agreed pact was signed 50+ years ago so each of them can live peacefully why was there an immediate war to destroy Israel and till date? It was tiny country with no military at that time right! What would you call that if it happened now?!

Great question and well raised - Various partition plans - first action was in 1920 when Britain hoovered off 90% of the region to create Jordan without any objections, although armed  3,000 Palestinians died in Amman in 1970 trying to liberate it (Look up black september). The 1948 peaceful division of the remaining 10% went back to 1937 Peel Report - so 75 years+ old.

I've felt the same emotions since I was 'red pilled' 15 years ago and first understood what is going on there. Very distressing & upsetting especially in our modern era.

This would be worth reading for anyone not really knowing the history there, have visited Palestine / Israel a few times, the last visit was 3 weeks in a small Palestinian village just outside Bethlehem. Im born and bred Welsh BTW, with no Jewish or Palestinian family, just interested in the country and history.
