Starter Guide

************************
The free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, is available now! Content additions include: new alien race, events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! Also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.
************************

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Key Features:

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

I warn everyone not to buy this game. You won't play anything else ever again, it's the ultimate "one more go" game.

Before buying, just did a quick "faster than light" (the quotes do help!) search in my emails & found I got it for free in an Epic Games giveaway back in Dec2019.
So worth a check too, if like me you haven't played it yet either & cannot remember if you might already own it!

A slight tangent, but Netflix subscribers who own iOS or Google devices should be able to download Into The Breach, an excellent Sci-Fi turn-based strategy by the same developer.
Most reading this will be aware of it, but I think Netflix do such a poor job of promoting this games that this will be news to some.

Fantastic game. Replay value is high. Long established players should check out the multiverse mod (new players should wait until they have sunk a good few hundred hours in to the vanilla. It's worth it)

I just looked it up, it’s actually an insane amount of new content, almost too much to get your head around! Definitely worth trying out at some point

Playable on the web with Humble too.

Just a pity it doesn't work with touchscreens, so I still have to keep the ancient iPad I have for the sole reason of playing this on the sofa.

There's a mod that lets you play touchscreen. I used to play on a Windows tablet. Not sure about posting links, but if you Google ftl touchscreen you should find it easy enough. What a game it is! Just stay away from the giant spiders...

I've built a PC with a 3080FE and all I play is this game. Money well spent...

Does anyone use any specific mods with this? I’ve pumped so many hours into it but never even really considered using any mods except for maybe more random quests/stories

After playing vanilla for years I recently installed the multiverse mod. I could sit here and try tell you about all the improvements but I wouldn't do it justice. Short versions is a plethora of new ships, new weapons, new storylines and new races including giant alien spiders and mutant versions of current races. The art style of all the new items and new music is spot on to the original game. If nothing else watch a YouTube trailer on multiverse. It's great.

If this came as a powder you would get decades in jail for selling it.
It looks so basic but is absurdly addictive.

It is living proof that fancy graphics do not necessarily equate to quality gameplay or immersion. Though the soundtrack is a work of art in itself, I bought the vinyl

Great game. Super addictive. If you’re lucky you might catch it on the iOS store for £2-3, I enjoyed it more as a tablet experience over computer.
I tried it on my steam deck, but I don’t think it has controller support? 🤷🏻‍♂️
