Not true I'm afraid. Copied from elsewhere because I'm lazy...

This is incorrect, a 2kw convector and a 2kw oil filled radiator will consume the same amount of power, assuming the thermostats are set to the same temperature.
They will cost exactly the same to run.
Both convert electrical energy to heat energy with near 100% efficiency.
Oil filled radiators take longer to heat up, and consequently longer to cool down.

A fan or convector heater will produce almost instant heat, an oil filled won't produce much useable heat until it has heated up the oil, then it will continue to give out that heat long after it has been switched off. There is NO difference in heat output, only WHEN it is output.

its hard at the moment to keep my house warm on a budget, I will have to work out if this will save me money overall (edited)

I think will only save you money if you have (non heat pump) electric-only heating, or GCH and a large house or inefficient boiler/system and want to keep a room warmer separately. If you have a room with an undersized radiator meaning it doesn’t usually get warm enough, that might save you money when you’re using it if it’s only used occasionally, versus skewing the balance of the radiators a lot.

For the little 650w one... Whilst a good deal this is £5 more than it was when it was in the 50% off sale 2 years ago. I know everyone is out of flux capacitor juice at present but it shows that in 2 years they've put this product up by £10, that's like 50%! criminal... Good product if you can find stock.

Is the 2500W 11-fin best in terms of value for money with its spec, (not the 85p running cost)
    aleem's avatar

I bought two of those - they have 3 heat settings, so you have the choice of full blast 2500W, or lower 1000W, 1500W options which will obviously reduce the running costs accordingly.

I got the small 650w delivered this morning, and I am so confused, haha... It won't stay on for more than 2 minutes at a time, then it takes 10 minutes plus to switch back on. There doesn't seem to be a way to override the auto switch off so I can't even comment if it's warming the room. Doesn't seem like it

Anyone got any ideas before I return?

It heats up to temp then cuts out, the oil stays warm, cuts back in when the oil temp drops.

Running it constantly would be like keeping a kettle on boil.

That’s why these oil type heaters are more energy efficient than fan type.

    They are for small rooms.

I personally use it in a medium large room with my thermostats set to 18. This helps reduce the gas boiler usage as I have solar powering them. Seems to be helping in my set up and at 650w it doesn’t over burden my inverter.

Got mine (two) yesterday. According to my energy monitor its actually using 735w. Working from home I have it under my desk and it is keeping me warm. Too small to heat the whole room. Had it constantly on from 9:00am to 5:00pm full power and it has used about 50p of electric (at rate of 34p kwh)
