Types of Rugs and What to Look For

• Bathroom Rugs

  Bathroom rugs need to be soft to touch, but also hard-wearing and, most importantly, waterproof. Avoiding plastic materials makes sense here, but natural fibres like jute will work really well, absorbing water with ease while drying quickly.

• Living Room & Area Rugs

  If you're picking a rug for living room settings, you'll find plenty of colourful options that are designed to make a statement. The living room is a place to show off your style and taste, and designs vary from single colour blocks to geometric and printed patterns. Pick a size which fills the space available, while leaving some space around the edges for a bit of the floor to show.

• Outdoor Rugs

  When picking outdoor rugs, weather comes into the equation. Look for rugs that are rugged, durable, and able to withstand bright sunlight. Polypropylene would be a good material to choose, as natural fibres are probably more suited to the controlled climate of indoor settings.

• Hallway Rugs

  Hallways tend to require special “runner” rugs which have longer shapes and slim profiles. Try to find one which is slightly smaller than the corridor to be covered, with a border around the edge. Pick a durable material like jute or synthetics as well, because shoes are likely to be used near doorways.

• Basement Rugs

  Humidity is a major factor in basements and cellars, and not all rugs will handle moisture well. Take a look at rugs made from olefin, a synthetic which stands up to moisture incredibly well. Nylon is also a good choice and is often just as durable.

• Wool Rugs

  Wool tends to be the premium rug material for most buyers, due to its shaggy softness and general level of comfort. A good wool rug will last for years, and its fibres will always spring back into their original shape. Wool rugs also deal well with food and drink stains. However, Because of the quality of material, price is a major factor here, as wool rugs will cost a bit more than comparable materials.

• Cotton Rugs

  Generally cheaper than wool and often as durable, cotton rugs make a good alternative. They won't have the luxuriously shaggy quality of wool and may be prone to tearing, but cotton rugs roll up neatly and handle a lot of punishment.

• Jute or Sisal Rugs

  Increasingly popular due to sustainability issues, jute and sisal materials are rugged and durable, making them handy for places where shoes are commonly worn. Their abrasive surfaces can offset smooth wood and vinyl floors, but can sometimes be a little harsh on bare skin.

• Plastic Rugs

  Polypropylene is a good rug material to go for if you are on a budget, as its production costs are low. Often available in brightly coloured designs, polypropylene rugs may not feel so soft but will be durable over the long term. Nylon has better water resistance and also lasts a long time, while viscose has a silk-like texture but requires more maintenance.
