We have similar, a Tonibox, with figures. It doesn't replace anything, it just allows our son to listen to stories of choose his own and play them. I wasn't sold on the concept but he seems to like it.

You can also buy blank cards and record your own stories and/or add your own audio files onto I think. Friend has got one, and from what I’ve seen, the front changes to basic pixelated pictures based on the story, which was quite cool

Have one for my eight year old and am thinking of getting one for my 11 year old. Buy a blank card and you can put any stories on you can source as mp3 (or you can just 'cast' audio files uploaded to their server). Really easy for kids to use, keeps their place when they take the card out and is a handy clock/light by their bed. I think it would be great for a 2 year old and something they could keep for years.

Can anyone explain the benefit of his over a phone with audible …Can anyone explain the benefit of his over a phone with audible subscription.

the point of Yoto is kids can use it without you, screen free (aside from the pixelated icon screen to show the card). Tiny toddlers and young kids can feel the independence of reading their own cards, putting in their own cards, listening to their favourite music whenever they want, listen to grandparents or relatives reading stories that you can load onto a blank card. Or listen to a kids meditation card if they want to relax, or play a flickering icon campfire that crackles with fire sound in their playtime. You can carry around the Yoto room to room or outside (you can buy a coloured jacket with a handle). It also has a night light, a free daily educational podcast which tells you the date and day of the week, and highlights notable days or has simple addition, word games or geography facts (and birthday shoutouts, joke Friday you can send in your joke or record it). It has a clock and day/night sun/moon symbols you can set with the app so a child knows when is time to get out of bed in the morning. And a radio station that switches from kids and Disney classics/pop/jazz/classical in the day to night time relaxing sleep radio. You can check the site if you want to see the name of a song, and use the app to see what card is currently playing. Over time with regular listening they learn a lot of words and surprise you with all sorts of facts! You don’t need to subscribe for all this, it’s all included, aside from whichever cards you want to buy.

If anyone has bought this you can borrow audio books from your local library and then store them in your Yoto account. These can then be played by controlling it with your phone OR connected to blank make your own cards and put in the top.
There’s some pretty active community groups on Facebook.
You can also share your own content (stuff you’ve put on a MYO card or into the app) with other people who can then add into your account.
People extract the audio from YouTube for instance and then all of a sudden there’s Bluey content being shared…. It doesn’t have to cost a bomb (edited)

Suppose it’s good for kids who are not at a trading age yet. Or where keeping them in bed is an issue.

Either way it’s each to their own I suppose.

Still a good deal as you rarely see it discounted. Obviously popular as stock is always an issue.

I agree. If it could connect to audible I’d love it. We use an Alexa instead. My concern with the Yoto business model is that you rely on them to keep going. Without their web service the speaker doesn’t do anything. Whilst at least with Alexa not much chance of the cloud part closing down(!)

I am looking at this thinking “is it a good idea” then I could add to it, for birthdays etc. I would welcome advice. My daughter is in childcare, she reads to her every night at bedtime. Is this for lazy parents, no offence meant. It seems to be something that could be used for years. Or! Is it like everything else, they update them annually. I would appreciate feedback. Thank you

Personally I would get her a tonie box over this. That’s what I’ve got for my very nearly 2 year old, she likes the figures and I don’t think the cards would last 2 minutes with a toddler.
Also my daughter is a total bookworm, we read to her all the time (both myself and her dad are teachers) the tonie box was recommended by another teacher colleague of mine. She likes the stories and songs. My colleague says she reads her children a couple of books then they choose a tonie to fall asleep to. We use them for background when we are eating or playing. The tonies usually have the story and some songs and she loves (attempting) to sing along!

The cards are plastic cards just like a credit card but thicker so should last, but I think once you’ve bought them you can add them to the app on your phone and play them from there so if you do lose a card you don’t lose the book.

We bought one for our 3 year old and find it very good. It doesn’t get used everyday, but it’s something that will get used for years to come and will become more useful as he gets older. We read to him every night and we don’t want this to replace that, but it’s great for him to have a story to fall asleep to if he wants, it even does white noise.
The daily podcast is great and the wife and I enjoy the quizzes that come and are very educational for all ages (3 is still a bit young for these though).
Overall it’s one of those things that will grow with your child and should provide years of entertainment, it might not be an instant fix like a cheap plastic toy, but then it will still be used years to come! (edited)

We researched this recently and went with the Yoto player, two reasons:

    1) More free content on Yoto, love the daily podcasts etc, plus integration with radios and sleep sounds
    2) I don't need more plastic junk in the house, the little figurines that come with the Toni player just take up too much space, the cards are smaller and harder to damage. (A friend left a Tony figurine near a bedside light and it melted..!)

Will have to wait for Christmas morning to see if it was the right choice!!

I’m in a similar position where my kids have a fair amount of “stuff” and we also read to them most nights.

We’re looking at it for after story time and more at bedtime. Our plan is to pop a story on to listen to before sleep. Or if they wake up early as an alternative to electronics.

Can’t really recommend it as it’s a Christmas gift but I have heard good things.
  22. Windle84's avatar
My kids love this (3 and 6). We read them a couple stories before bed then they listen to one of its best features which is Yoto Daily (podcast) which is updated each day. They then normally fall asleep listening to a final story or the radio (locked to a Yoto station). You can record your own stories onto a card, great if you have family friends further away.
  23. hew105's avatar
We went with a kids dot instead as the unit is cheaper and you get a year's subscription to Amazon kids so plenty of content. It's been a big hit with the 4yo and 8yo. Obviosuly requires them to be able to say Alexa.

Some very valid points. Seems yoto do "make your own" cards to upload your own music and recordings too. you can get 10 of them for less than two of the "creative tonies" figurines which are designed to do the same but think have more limitations naturalbabyshower.ie/pro…ack
