    Is the wood pressure treated?

No it’s not. I got a 10 litre tin of Demi Dekk for £120 and used that. Looked brilliant 5 years on even after storm Arwen and various other storms and snowstorms etc.

The first picture is when we made it. It’s literally a review left on the item and the other picture is 5 years later when I was selling it.
I had a bunch more pictures when I was selling it but deleted them all after it’s gone. All my other pictures are just family ones inside it etc.

I bought a similar shed from Wayfair. i was dubious about using them but at the height of covid most companies didn't have stock (Tuin) or refused to deliver to Scotland (Dunster House).

In the end the shed and all its components were of good quality, came with everything i needed (except insulation and I also opted for a rubber roof). It appeared pretty much identical to a Tuin shed and i followed Tuins building guides and videos without issues. (They have masses of content on their site). Almost 3 years later and its still in daily use.

I asked some questions via Wayfair, and had a reply within 48 hours from the manufacturer. The door handle failed after 2 years (snapped spring, but the handle was attached to the backing panel and was a non standard size) and the manufacturer sent me a new handle from their factory in Eastern Europe by courier within 5 days. I didn't have high expectations of Wayfair but they've been decent.

I would recommend a slightly thicker walled shed than this one, mine is 44mm and with a 2kw electric heater and 40mm kingspan floor and roof insulation i've used it as an office when its been -7°c outside. i have another shed which is 28mm which wouldnt be any use in winter.... this one is 34mm which falls between the two, i'd call this a 3 season shed unless you want to put some extra work in.

Depending what you’re using it for.
all year round office then fair enough.
i know someone who got one like this then insulated it and then it was too hot in the summer and ended up with air conditioning in it.
It’s very hard to balance it properly.
Our one of these was brilliant for the 5 years we had it. Fairly decent in winter but depends on the garden layout too.

Do you need planning permission to put something like this up? I'd want to put it on the left-side of my garden, next to my neighbour's fence which is roughly east, so it might cast a shadow over their garden late afternoon when the sun is in the west.
    simonhaffenden's avatar
Not Normally if it is rear garden and no more than 1 story

Here is a handy checklist of some of the main points to remember:

    • Your shed should not be positioned forward of a wall that forms the principal elevation of the property.
    • All sheds should be single-storey in nature.
    • The eaves height should be no higher than 2.5 metres.
    • The maximum overall height should be no higher than 4 metres for a dual pitch roof (all other roof options have a max height of 3 metres).
    • If the shed stands less than 2 metres from one or more boundaries of the property, the overall height should not exceed 2.5 metres.
    • In the case of designated land, planning permission will still be required.
    • In the case of land in national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and similar sites, any sheds or similar structures over 20 metres away from the house cannot take up more than 10 square metres.
    • In the case of a listed building of any kind, planning permission will be required.
It is also important to note your shed should not be designed to provide sleeping accommodation. Any building that essentially marks a change of use for the property should be looked into in more detail.

So not only needs treating will also need a roof cover

It comes with a roof. But can do extra if you want.
we got a rubber sheeting and used industrial glue and never had a leak in the 5 years it was up. Not a drop through all the storms.

Thanks, So I guess you would need to prepare the garden floor isn't it?

We just got some sand and laid slabs. Have to make sure it’s pretty level before you start to build it. very easy to build.
me and my dad did it in one day.

Great find! @davezilla what treatment did you put on the wood? And did you have to do interior and exterior?
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Used Demi Dekk stuff on it. £120 for 10 litres. We only did outside and even 5 years later inside looked great. Obviously wouldn’t hurt to do both

What do people think about adapting it to have windows in the sides? It would cost to get more structural supports and glazing, but there don't seem to be good options for if you want more of a view out!
    Hung_Tran's avatar
There's no additional "structural support" required as such. If you need to put a window in then it is just an opening cut into the wall as each plank sits on the one below via T&G fitting. You might need to make sure the windows have the right depth mind as the wall is not that thick.

34mm thick. Personally I think it's too expensive. I do have a 4m x 5m unit so have an idea of pricing

Expensive? I’d be happy to see something of this quality for this sort of price.

We had ours for 5 years without a single issue. No company came close to this and I’ve been looking for a few months.

Not a good deal , small for the money , no roof , not treated

For nearly 3 thousand pounds you are buying a shed without a roof
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Show me something of this quality for this price.

small? It’s 3.8 meters long. And 2.5 in depth. We had a sofa and chairs and enough space for a play area for the kids with storage and a tv etc.

there is a roof. It’s just better to buy extra roofing. For more protection.

You Can buy a 10 litre tin of Demi Dekk for £120 and treat it for cheaper than buying any other summerhouse.

please show us all your idea of a good quality one for an affordable price.

Would love my own man cave/office space. Seems a great price, but outside my meagre budget. Perhaps one day…
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Yeah obviously it’s not for everyone but you would struggle to find anything near this quality for this price.
I was over the moon with ours and can’t wait to get the new one up and enjoy it this summer. Kids love playing it in.

I like the idea of a summer house but can't stand creepy crawlies. Are summer houses generally built without small gaps between the sideboards, windows and doors so that spiders and ants can't make their way in?
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
This one locks into place so it’s like a jigsaw so very little spaces. But spiders can appear anywhere.
we never really had any problems with spiders and err. Ants? Where do you live.

  23. hd321's avatar
What do you think the cost of a base and someone to build it would be?
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Base? It comes with a base then you build the summerhouse on it.

we just did it all the on slabs.

    How is this being delivered?
    davezilla's avatar

They arrive with a big lorry. It’s on a pallet and they use their crane to drop it off. I got them to lift it into my back garden last time

I have one, BUT, I bought one with insulated msg interior panels, felted roof, laminate, full electricity etc and delivered with three men who erected it and hooked up electricity for under 7000
Up to you to decide if it’s a deal but…… it’s bloody cold out there even with heating this is BASICALLY A POSH SHED how they call them summerhouses is bit misleading
    It’s just a shed 👎
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
It’s not a shed. Sheds are just sheets of wood. This is an interlocking structure of 34mm thick wood with double glazing windows and doors.
there is a HUGE difference there.

I literally own this one. Had electricity installed for £300. Roofing for a little bit and paint to treat it. Then rubber roofing.

£7000? you got well and truly taken advantage of. (edited)

blimey prices have shot up haven’t they ordered ours from Tuin in Feb 2 years ago, same price but was 5x3.2m with 45mm walls and free shingles
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Yeah it has. I got this exact model for £1900 about 6 years ago. It has went as high as £4000 during lockdown etc. and it’s coming back down. But this is the cheapest it’s been anywhere for a long time.

best to buy this time of year when they aren’t in demand.

It wasn’t that price before. Their site chops and changes their prices and offers.
However it’s a thinner wood in that one, which is a big thing for summerhouses.
  36. Lee_Kennedy's avatar
Would this work well as a garden gym? Obviously if the base is suitable i.e concrete slabs.
    louisputtick's avatar
I'm looking for similar but don't think this is big enough
  37. mungylee's avatar
Sorry. We're just buying a new house, and im clueless with DIY/gardening.

Would we need to lay concrete or similar down, before building this?
    davezilla's avatar
    Author
Concrete or slabs or something. it needs to be properly level or else it won’t go together properly.

We are away to order slabs and sand etc and dig the garden and lay a base for it. Like we did with our old one.
