Does anyone know of this can be turned on and off by a smart plug?
    Walkerscrisp's avatar
    Walkerscrisp
It can be (turned off, not on), but do yourself a favour and don't. These are meant to power down naturally when turned off or switch off when reach the required humidity level. Turning off suddenly from the plug can damage the unit. (edited)

Never heard of appliances direct, are they legit?

Appliances direct have been around for years and are 100% legit. They are part of the "Buy it direct group" of companies (Appliance direct, Laptop direct, Drones direct, better bathrooms, Furniture 123, outdoor living). They even have 2 physical sites you can go and look or visit to pickup. I've been to the east Midlands one myself.

Looh at their about us page for more information...appliancesdirect.co.uk/con…out

Brilliant dehumidifier had it for about 5 years the only thing is that about once a year you need to remove panel to get access to radiators and clean them as it becomes inefficient due to dust and pet hair build up and eventually even stops working once the radiator completely clogs tho that will happen with any dehumidifier

How do you do that. Is it in the instructions and is it easy to do.

I bought this about 6 months ago due to getting quite bad condensation in the lounge. It started to fix the problem overnight. Initially it was on nearly permanently for about two weeks then started to click off frequently (we set humidity target to 55%). This unit costs about 6p an hour to run with current costs. It's amazing how much water it takes out of the air and it does make the room feel warmer. It only comes for about two hours a day now. One drawback is we have it on in the lounge and on the higher fan speed it is noticeably loud. (edited)

    • Energy Efficient costs just 2.45p/hour based on the UK average tariff of 15p/kWh.

Price was never £330, More like £160 at the most. I bought a 12L one for £180 at full price,

These work at 10 degrees and above. You'd have to have a very cold house for this not to work inside

Fake advertising "Energy Efficient costs just 2.45p/hour based on the UK average tariff of 15p/kWh"
Keep away from this ,no one in UK is on 15p per kWh.
    Big_Mark's avatar
    Big_Mark
In their defence, when this product came out 5+ years ago the UK average tariff was in fact 15p/kWH.

They should update their marketing to reflect current prices though.

My heat pump tuble dryer cost around £10 ish a month. Cant see how a dehumidifier would cost less than that and even if it did it would be insignificant amount. Not worth having clothes everywhere trying to dry them for hours with a dehumidifier
    andiron87's avatar
    andiron87
Tumble dryer costs between £1-£2 per cycle (£1 is the heat pump version).
This dries my clothes when i leave it in laundry mode for 5h in small room, so 5h with 5p per hour comes to about 30p.

Also worth considering initial costs £140 Vs £400, assuming these goods live for 5 years.

Another thing I've read is that tumble driers damage clothes quicker. So worth keeping that in mind too for long term.
But they're definitely require less hassle. (edited)

*States its for a 3 bedroom house*

I have this exact same model and from appliancesdirect and its not powerful enough for a 3 bedroom house ! ideal for a flat but not a house ! would recommend buying a more powerful one for a house , Also had to send my one back after 2 months as it was faulty, they were very dlow at resolving the problem and eventually sent out a replacement one 3 weeks later
    mxttkeep's avatar
    mxttkeep
Possibly stupid question but how does this work in a 3 bed house? None of our rooms upstairs are connected so where would you put in so that all rooms are benefited from it?

With an extra years warranty. More likely to fail in 3rd year v 1st ar 2nd.   Worth £10 extra imo and that’s the standard price.      Can only conclude this post is considered hot due to fictitious inflated original price.   Also been superseded by Arete which is cheaper to run and has 5 year warranty.     (edited)

Love this thing. Bought it a few months back because with the lack of turning on heat and cold weather and not opening windows my bedroom started getting some patches in top corners, windows dripping with condensation and tiny mould growing in top corners of room. This thing took an entire day to get from recommended 55-60 as my room was 92 humidity!!!!!!!! 5p an hour to run and I can say its been a God send. Now just needs topping up every once in a while until weather improves. Has auto shut off when full. I got the ABC 10L one. Its small but heavier than you think. Especially through this winter season, its a crucial bit of kit. Seems to clean the air too and makes the room warmer if that makes sense.

The higher humidity leads to damp cold. The feeling temperature is much lower. That’s why winters in mainland Europe with lows at -15C are ok, whilst in the UK 0C is very uncomfortable.

Keeps the garage warm. I turn my compressor one off at 5C, it being fine at 10C.
Though I imagine a desiccant one is almost as cheap to run at 10C. (edited)

Ahh, found the page where Meaco show the differences between their 12L models, good info here... (And yes the newer Arete seems better to me, the Night Mode particularly I use a lot)...

    blog.meaco.com/the…rs/

Been very hard to get the Aretes the last 6 months to be sure, I got my 10L (I would have preferred the 12L but the 10L has been good) from Meaco directly one day, and sort of "pops up" on there now and then. (edited)

The Meaco Arete is the newer (and better I think) model, I have the Arete and it's not just a'reete, it's very good.

(Not sure but I think the Arete has better filter on it, and also has a simple Air Purifier setting, but I am not an expert). (edited)

A great dehumidifier, Meaco make excellent products, but be careful buying it here. I bought a dehumidifier from appliancesdirect in 2021 and when it developed fault almost immediately they refused to honour my right to a refund and instead insisted that I needed to contact Meaco for a repair. I had to issue an appeal/chargeback via mastercard.
