Can't go wrong with a smaller Seiko 5 automatic. I'm a fan of the SNK809. It's a 37mm case so pretty compact and can be had for not a lot of money. The movement is a little dated now but still holds up as a rugged and capable one. It doesn't hack but it's good for many years use. It uses the 7s26 which was the precursor for the 4r35/36 which is used in so many watches today.

Alternatively, and this is always a divisive issue, you could get on Aliexpress and buy something from Pagani Design, Steel dive, etc that will run on a NH35/36 (the same as a 4r35/36). It will likely have sapphire crystal and a dive rating of 100-200m. There are a million watches that fit that description and they are better quality than many watch snobs are willing to admit.

What style are you looking at? Field watch? Dive watch? Dress watch? Or maybe a GADA watch? What is his wrist size?

I've had an Edifice watch for 12 years, it has run without missing a beat. Every other watch I've had, all suffered some form of problems. Either bracelet coming undone because pins pop out or mechanical issues. I've had Seiko, Omega, Tissot and Accurist. My Edifice has outlasted all of them!
