    Eh? All is very simple.

    SSD or small HDD only requires the the USB powered connection

    Older 3.5 inch HDD (the big heavy ones) need an extra power source the power the drive as USB power alone isn't enough.

    Hi, would appreciate if you could help a noob.

    I purchased a 2.5inch 512GB ssd from a deal here last week to replace the existing one in my laptop, but have been too scared to lose data.

    If I buy this: ORICO SATA to USB Cable, USB 3.0 to SATA III Cable for 2.5 inch HDD/SSD Hard Drive Support UASP with 2.5'' Silicone Case(S1-3AB-03)

    Will I be able to plug in new drive via USB, transfer everything straight across from current SSD, then fit the new loaded SSD into the laptop?

    You will need to use cloning software such as Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper. You cannot just copy across the files.

    According to the manufacturer, this adapter has a speed rating of 5GBs. To the adapter, I connected an SSD. I got a maximum speed of 220mbs, which is 0.25GB. Compared to 5GBs, that's a significant decrease. Do you know if this adapter has been tested for speed by any purchaser?

    Bit random. My HP laptop won't show my SD Card in the File Explorer anymore. Shows up under Devices in the Windows Settings menu. But not in FE nor does it acknowledge the SD card being there.
