I bought one of these recently and it did indeed find the problem as my car was really noisy and holding back and lots of smoke.
Plugged the little gadget in and straight away the fault popped up.... "take the handbrake off idiot"

I was an Amazon test customer for this device and quite frankly it was very unimpressive. Did not clear the codes. Did not find a brake sensor issue, eventhough it should have shown a code. It had link problems etc. Personally I would not buy this item. (edited)

A few people reporting link errors when plugging this in. Some say the link error can sometimes be resolved by turning the key to another position if possible.

For those who have fixed a fault but still have the annoying engine management light on the vehicle you can turn off the engine management light by switching the engine on and off, wait 1 second and repeat twice. You don’t need this to clear the light.

I'd partially agree, although it doesn't take much to see whether a wire has come unplugged or broken (for example). If it was truly an airbag or sensor issue then yes it would be off to the garage.

I found 'Car Scanner' to be a bit better than Torque - I found it easier to see the raw data, whereas Torque seems more about setting up fancy graphs and gauges which are better in the long run, but a faff when all you want to know is if a cylinder is misfiring.

Of course, given that they are both free, I just installed both!

There's really not much to go wrong with an ELM327 dongle. It's exactly the same chip as what's in this Aldi special but with a Bluetooth module on top. I've got a few lying around, one that's been with me for about 10 years. Cheapest of the cheap, but still working fine.

Anyone who buys this product is a fool when they can get something 100x more functional for less than 10% of the cost.

That doesn't clear the codes though and you have to have a device which will. There is another plug in bluetooth device which links to smartphone or tablet and can do all this in greater detail for around the same money.

I only mentioned Torque as that was pretty much all that was available when I bought my reader. Excellent to know there are other easier apps out there now.

Another option available would be to download the torque app on your phone and use it with a £3 Bluetooth or WiFi obd2 reader off of eBay/Amazon. This clears faults as well as showing loads of data.

Very easy to use and works with almost any car.

Don't bother, it'll be a waste of money.
Get a Bluetooth one, there are great apps out there which are miles better and actually show manufacturer codes.
I used the elm327 and fordscan in my Ford, did the job finding injector pizzo problems.

This will end up being used once. Not finding the problem and then stuck in a drawer never used again.

Btw i have a similar one. It's in a drawer after it's first use.

An error light or ABS light, but 'no codes found', because they use a device similar to this and it can't get to the relevant location. If someone was after a fault code reader I'd recommend one that can do airbags and ABS.

Do these OBD scanners also cater for the coding element or is that usually limited to more exensive options such as VAGCOM?

You have to pay more for a decent system to be able to code. But that’s just as well as the ability to break things on the car increases dramatically when coding (or even just turning your satnav instructions into Korean)

True and having the codes thrown up means you can be much more specific to the garage you go to and potentially ensure a far more efficient and fair service done to a higher standard.

Some of the garages I've seen mug people and rob them of hundreds upon thousands of pounds just selling them stuff don't honestly need. It disgusts me. (edited)

Exactly. I just happen to have a personal connection to a mechanic so I am lucky to just give them my car and it'll be okay. My sibling lives away and isn't lucky like me to do this. She got practically mugged for a couple of years with her and she still had loads of problems with her motor. In the end, they just drive to us and drop the car off and we take care of it, it's become that bad now.

The moral of the story, never buy VAG (unless it's a Skoda) and stay loyal to your good mechanics. Give them respect and pay them a fair price for their work.

Most imported consumer products are made in China so that argument is null and void. Majority of these modern Amazon entrepreneurs are well-acquainted with AliBaba. It's all about branding, and product development.

Thanks for posting the link, I only just got back to see the replies. I use the EOBD Facile app, which is free for basic functions but you have to pay if you want to do more like clearing codes.

Some people use these apps while driving either to check for when codes appear, or to see graphs on engine performance, but I did have to download the specific data for my car before it could be used.
