Just use a bottle opener to relieve the pressure.

A good solid tap or two on the top edge of the lid with the back of a knife will release the seal and it will open with ease.

Unfortunately I've only got 10,000 spoons. No knife.

    Which is ironic.

Can’t recommend - bought one exactly the same (sold under loads of different ‘brands’) - it snapped in half in use after about a month. (edited)

I prefer smashing the bottle, it’s the most efficient way.

I gave up on a flexible version of this. On the odd occasion the teeth gripped the lid, i couldn't grip the jar.

I now use a pair of these - Ansell Tuf Duk. These are pretty heavy duty, but you should get the same effect from lighter gloves as long as the fingers/palms have a decent grip surface.49905730-XprQL.jpg

funnily enough, I just used gloves to open a Nebo Big Larry 2, it's surprising how much difference a bit of grip does.  without them, I couldn't unscrew it, with them, easy.

You don't need anything like this, just tap the edges of the jar lid on something strong like the ledge of concrete. Loosens the lids grip. (edited)

I'm told Thermite works well - as does C4 and other wholesome American methods of which about 30% require an A-10 Warthog (also used to light BBQs too!).

I love it, as would anyone who is even slightly Arthritic. All the nonesense about bashing lids etc. is silly. I use it daily and a great boon - never snapped one either. HOT.

I got something very similar from Ali Express 7 years ago. Use it regularly - opens difficult jars effortlessly. (I think it is just the initial opening of honey jars I use it on). Recommend.

Any good for taking off an oil filter?

Nope. Thump a screwdriver through it, mid point, and unscrew.

No chance, which, in the case of gherkins, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Just use a cling film, wrap it around the lid and opens so easy.

Quick hack. Gently hit the jar's lid on the floor and it's easy to open, you can also use wooden spoon and tap around the lid few times. Otherwise pry the lid with spoon. Works the same.

Just rotate the lid a few times over gas flame (not burning hot)and open with tea towel. Works like charm and no pressure needed.

can use the slim flat end of any cutlery or a butter knife to relieve the pressure of the jar. No need for this at all. (edited)
