Could be a little off the topic...Got a call from Octopus a few days ago, to cut the long story short, they offered us a complete 2,3 kWh system including battery for around £11k... A few months back we were told by a local company/ around 6kWh system/14 panels including battery for the same price.

Solar installers are a rip off. The most expensive part is the scaffolding. A roofer isn't very expensive and they should be able to mount 10 solar pannels and their rails in a couple of days. Chuck a sparkey and hours pay and a beer to write a list of the eletical components you will need, order them and then pay the sparkey a days pay to wire it all up. I'd expect an install like that if you manage it to cost a max of 6 grand for 14 pannels.

Some useful information here: - moneysavingexpert.com/uti…ls/
I have been experimenting with solar panels at home for nearly 10 years with mixed results.
Surplus new 24 volt panels are cheap, you just need to hunt them out. Note that you can buy panels that are around 370/400 watts that are the same size as 250/270 watt panels a couple of years ago. There are plenty of these on Ebay, but I would pay more and buy the more powerful panel. You need more capacity in winter when days are shorter.
If you really want a cheap panel for a shed those with cracked/shattered glass can be dirt cheap, they need sealing with clear sealer, plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it..
Leisure batteries don't work well on home installations, deep cycle batteries are needed. Leisure batteries are not designed for a lot of charge/discharge cycles.
Cheap Chinese solar controllers are generally inefficient, also can overcharge then the battery runs dry.
I have changed mine for Victron controllers.

Recommend any brands for the solar panels? Talking to someone they buy their panels for avg £5k and sell them on for about £15k which I thought was crazy margins.

Can easily get 300-400w panels for less than this. Look on Midsummer wholesale if anyone is interested

I bought 270W Trina panels for £80 each February last year. And I can get 300w ones for £10 cheaper. So unfortunately not a hot deal imo

solar panels have dropped in price in a big way compared to last year. Solar Trade Sales pretty decent place to pickup panels at a sensible price.49994088-0gYCj.jpg

I have a Renogy 100W folding panel. They're a bit pricier than some alternatives of the same wattage, but the build quality is *excellent*. Very happy with ours.

I have two sets of panels for off grid and pure sign wave inverter. Use to charge ebike and laptop. Also made some 12v batts from Dyson and old laptop 18650s. On a good day bike and laptop get a full charge

Is there any way I could use these solar panels to power a hot tub?

Definitely possible. Just seat in the middle. 49988140-lLy6Z.jpg

I somewhere read that there are panels built with storage so you not need separate batteries (atleast). but not sure they are in the market yet, when I search google gives only the battery packed for installation. does anyone did find them for sale?

Lithium batteries don't work well in the cold, so wouldn't work in winter, the heat of summer probably wouldn't be good for the batteries either.

I have seen small panels with batteries in for powering a CCTV camera or solar light.

Big renogy fan, but you can go to bimble solar and pick up a 400W Canadian Solar for £175 (plus £33 for delivery). Shop around before you buy. Work out the price per watt, and over budget everything. A 200W panel isn't going to knock out 200W every time the sun shines.

We have 6kW grid tied system on our roof, and another 1kW separate system that charges batteries I built myself.

What is the "real" efficiency on this? 22% seems a bit high

This panel with a couple of 100ah leisure batteries will charge as many devices as you ned + power a smallish compressor fridge, a TV and a diesel heater indefinitely over the spring/summer/autumn months. (edited)

I've been seriously considering getting some of these panels.
I know they wont do a lot but a little something is better than nothing.

I've also been looking into getting proper install in the home but pricing seems way OTT.
Yes I know if you source everything yourself you can get it done allot cheaper but wouldn't know where to start haha.

A lot of you have mentioned installing your own panels. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere of what to buy and since we are on a deals website, which is the best value for money solar panels+

You won't get an MCS certificate and therefore you won't get paid for anything that you export. If that's not an issue then go ahead.

Unless you have a pricey "powerstation" with a built-in controller you will need to buy a solar controller as well but they are relatively cheap £12 upwards (but make sure its shower proof)

Offset by the high cost per watt. Just because it's free delivery, doesn't make it a good deal.
