Decathlon has launched the ‘Festival Tent Pledge’ ahead of festival season to reward customers for not leaving their tent behind – which is one of the biggest problems festivals face.

The pledge, part of the No Tent Left Behind campaign, from the world’s biggest sports retailer has been supported by Glastonbury broadcaster Lauren Laverne. The pledge will be rolled out nationwide, allowing customers to return Decathlon’s most popular tent even after using it at a festival. As a reward for not leaving the £29.99 tent behind, Decathlon is guaranteeing a full refund in the form of a gift card.

Around 250,000 tents are left behind at festivals across the UK each year with most going to landfill. The new Pledge will run until 21st July and guarantees customers their money back when returning the selected tent in good condition to help reduce the amount of waste, and promote sustainable festival fun.

Any customer that has bought the Quechua MH100 Two Person Tent in 2023 – which is Decathlon’s most popular product during festival season, selling thousands last year, can return it in store for a £29.99 gift card. The price of the tent makes it one of the most likely tents to be left behind by festival goers and the cash back initiative hopes to incentivise customers to return the tent after the festival for it to be resold as part of the Second Life range to prolong the lifespan of tents and reducing single use consumption.

Decathlon has also worked with well-known music artist, Jack Teagle, to create in-store artwork that highlights the environmental impacts of leaving a tent behind. The posters will be displayed at all Decathlon stores in the UK during this year’s festival season to remind customers that festival purchases should not be single-use.

Chris Allen, Sustainability Leader at Decathlon UK, comments: “Festival season is one of the busiest periods in our stores because of our wide camping offering. We know single-use tents are an environmental problem, and aim to reduce the amount left behind with our No Tent Left Behind campaign. We’re deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact, and will give a full refund in the form of a gift card on this tent to demonstrate our commitment to encouraging people to bring their tent home.”

Lauren Laverne, Broadcaster, said: “It’s time for us to party responsibly at all festivals this year and show some love to the planet. Decathlon’s ‘No Tent Left Behind’ campaign allows people to enjoy their festival experience in an eco-friendly way – and earn themselves a bit of cash back at the end of it all. Keep the tunes – and tents going, and let’s make a lasting impact, one tent at a time!”

I know of people that collect these tents after the festivals end & they get exported for refugees.

Surely the same happens at Glastonbury?

Pretty sure the stats are made up in any case. (edited)

From all the festivals I've been too, Glastonbury was the one we're this didn't really happen. Most people are respectful there.

Its a different story at other festivals! People do leave these behind. Mostly I guess because it's a cheap tent which is cheap for a reason. They'll have had a rubbish time sleeping in it so just leave it.
I've seen a group of teens turn up with a brand new £100 tent (4 man but at least 8 in it as it had a big living area) & at the end of the weekend they destroyed it & set it on fire!
I've also recovered a decent vintage 2 man tunnel tent which my nephew now has for his Duke of Edinburgh.

It still doesn't make it right that you can leave a tent because you expect other people to collect it to export for refugees.

What we need is for companies to commit to stopping selling these nasty, single skin tents & pop up tents. They will give people bad experiences of camping & festivals, waste more money & plastic!

This £30 tent is decent. Lets have that as the starting point & not some £15 b&m/tesco rubbish.

2000, quite good for the price. Will stand up to most weather. I would be more concerned about the seams

Slightly misleading article showing the £129.99 fresh and black tent Decathlon sell rather than the £29.99 one but anything that helps can only be good.

Have this (3 person version) and old gen 2 person. Survived download festival few times, multiple trips all around the UK.

Can fault it especially for this price, never had a single issue (ok it would be nice to have blackout option :D)
    urbanbushwacker's avatar
if you would like the Blackout option 6 to 12 bottles of rattlers should do the job nicely

It looks quite good for the money actually. The dome shape is strong and means the tent can be picked up and moved around if you need to. There's plenty of height for you to sit up in it. 2.6kg isn't too heavy. The 3 year warranty is impressive.

Pity there isn't much of a porch. Fibre glass poles are not great, but that's standard at this price. Having to pitch the inner first won't be great if it's raining but I guess you could keep it connected to the flysheet.

I just wish the spoilt brats would have the decency to take their tents home without needing this monetary incentive!

i was going to say that there's no way thats a £30 tent in the pic.

A £30 tent is like a beach shelter, that one person couldnt even lay down in.
    quidditys_shore's avatar
I agree, most £30 tents are terrible beach shelter-esque ones but this actually looks good for the price.
Yes the porch will only fit your boots & it's probably more suited for one rather than two. But look after it & it'll do you for years.
I have an argos 1 man that cost me £15 in 2007. Still going strong! Even my 2 man tunnel tent from doing my Duke of Edinburgh 35 years ago still has plenty of life in it!

I won some tickets to 2000 Trees Festival and this looks perfect, all the better if I can return the tent (although if its good I'll probably keep it)

I've never found a 2 person tent that can comfortably fit two average adults.

Has anyone got this and can say what it's like?

I use a 3 person Jack Wolfskin tent for 2 of us.

That has a good amount of room inside. It's lightweight. It has been used in thunderstorms, and many times in torrential rain and stayed completely dry inside. (edited)

It’s not a 2 person, all the reviews say it’s a 1 person tent. I’ve got the 3 person tent, same model, which is more like a 2 person tent
  13. Ovidiu_Gheorghe's avatar
This is more a 1 person tent than 2, check the reviews, everybody says the same. I’ve got the 3 person one and it’s definitely a 2 person. They are pretty narrow.

looking for a tent to take on holiday with me. Will be camping for 2 weeks. Can I do better than this if I intend to leave the tent behind/donate it to the sports club i'm going with? Travelling on so don't want to lug around extra dead weight after the camping part of my holiday

    Great idea

So if you lose a tent peg you can’t get a refund? Rather defeats the object given v likely to happen packing up at a festival.
