Sadly they won't as long as people think Freesat (and DVR on modern TVs) is something you should pay for in the first place.

They take the Q boxes away and even if you have a HD box you lose the ability to record.
Of course you can just replace with a Humax DVR

So this is aimed at people who are either in the middle of a contract and want to save money or people who are out of contract but don't want to cancel sky completely and maybe look at increasing their subscription in a few months again when all of this is over.

Staying with Sky also means people keep their VIP tier status and access to all of their recordings on the box they have.

So many people dont seem to understand what the £5 is for. It is to allow you to keep the Sky Q box (if you dont pay the £5 you have no contract so the box goes back to Sky), to be able to record the freesat channels (without the £5 you would be able to watch freesat channels but not record) - to retain the recordings you have so that when you increase your subscription again to cover the channels they were recorded on they would play (without the £5 all the recordings would just disappear - because so would your Q box - the Q box actually being collected by sky may or may not happen - I am yet to experience cancelling Sky Q).

And you can do this even if you have 10 months of your £80 per month contract left.

Very nice offer from Sky IMO.

What I like about Sky is keeping call centres in the UK, a lot of companies have moved them abroad. Also there isn’t much competition really if your like me and can’t get Virgin TV. I had now TV but it’s still not as convenient as Sky and you don’t get a lot of channels. So I don’t want them to go bust or go away really.

Before pulling the trigger on this...

if you want to hold onto your services and still reduce the price down, I called them (6 months of existing contract left)

...and they agreed new low price 18 month contract for just £24.25
( Sky signature, inc box sets, on demand, Netflix, kids, UHD, multi room).

Lowest price I’ve ever had it for. (edited)

I disagree; £5 per month to have the recording and ease-of-use that comes with Sky Q is still cheaper than buying a Humax or similar box.

As others have pointed out, they demand Sky Q boxes back as they're much more expensive to make than the older ones. If you have an older Sky box then yes, there's little need unless you want recording.

I thought I made it pretty clear my gripe isn't with those who are struggling or those on low incomes it's those who are getting paid handsomely (albeit less than normal) for no work who can take advantage of it. Two people earning 55k each furloughed for example could claim it. Feels kinda wrong to me when we've got hospital porters in the line of fire performing full time roles getting paid peanuts. I appreciate everyone has to live, but Sky should be limiting this to those genuinely need it and what I'm saying is not all furloughed people will need it, for those that do, fine no issue.

But folk earning £55k will now be on £2500 a month.

No one should be moaning at anyone getting a discount when they are on furlough leave. These folk are no doubt worrying about money as well as if their job will still be there due to the amount of businesses expected to fold.

Come on mate - ease up a bit

Ridiculous thing to say at any time never alone in the midst of a pandemic.

Huge U.K. employer, many people rely on their services and they’ve been more than fair allowing people to pause sport subscripts, this and the other things they don’t make a song and dance about like supporting vulnerable people who can’t pay bills.

They’ve furloughed very few staff and allow staff to volunteer to help the NHS charities.

If you don’t like Sky’s products don’t buy them but don’t chat utter waffle.

This for me works out well. My wife insists on keeping Sky as she likes the layout, recording and pausing etc. But she only ever watches the freeview channels. We don't subscribe to sports as I always found I was booted off the main TV and ended up watching on my laptop anyway, which can be sourced in a different way. I've tried converting her to normal freeview using our TV's built in option, but the recording and layout is clunky. I'm happy to pay £5 a month for a decent recording box, with easy access to all the catch up TV services, so this is a price i'm happy to pay. And I guess that as Sky now own the box, if anything goes wrong they will have to fix or replace it. Question about the mini boxes. Looking through the terms and conditions it says that they will charge £50 for an unreturned mini box. Looking on ebay they go for a lot more than that. Any downsides of forgetting to return it?

You DON'T get to keep the SKY Q boxes. You are only renting them. That is why you no longer pay for repairs to the box. Sky will continue to own the box. They take it back if you leave them.
I will definately be leaving Sky once we get back to normal as they are charging me a fortune and I can't record, rewind, pause programmes, etc. Despite being with them since 2008, they have never offerred a decent deal. Will be glad to leave. I don't even have fibre. And they told me they don't do the package I have anymore. I will definately NOT reccommend Sky to anyone.

Don't believe it's cost driven, more likely so they don't have people cancelling but still having a perfectly usable box to watch free services at their cost, stops people using 'my box is broken' as a negotiation tool to get a cheaper contact/free upgrade and means they can't stick them on eBay.

The new boxes will still cheap as chips to produce, albeit a couple more chips than before and they likely make the cost back in no more than a couple of months 'rental' if that.

I phoned up to complain because my sky bill has increased over last couple of months , it's now increased to an extra £7 a month . Phoned up to complain and they couldn't do anything untill my contract ends in November but could only give me £5 off my bill because I am a key worker. When my contract ends in November , I will gladly wave them goodbye !

From my understanding you can keep it for however long you want.

    From the Sky page:
If you're in a minimum term for your Sky TV, you'll need to keep Sky Basics for the rest of this period.

You also won't be given the option to go back to any original deals you may have had.

    From the Sky page:
If you upgrade back to Sky TV in the future, you'll have to take Sky Signature.

I get it for those who are on low incomes, but there will be plenty of furloughed people who aren't really struggling, getting paid 2.5k a month for sitting around doing nothing, who can "claim" this one whilst those who are still working cannot get it. Think of all those key workers making sure everyone has enough food and gets cared for - no discount like this for them from Sky?

I would really hope that people had to demonstrate some real financial hardship to get this, because furlough alone doesn't equate to that in plenty of cases I know of. I don't begrudge those who genuinely are hard up because of events, I do for those who are getting reasonably well paid to do nothing and can claim stuff like this. (edited)
