sorted byHmmm, I understand what you are trying to say, but for lateral raises, tricep extensions, upward dumbell fly, goblet squat controlled etc. So this weight is adequate for most body builders. I also assume you can add more plates to one bar and have that extra weight (20kg for one dumbell)?
I do notice most lads in the gym swinging heavy weights, rather than doing a more methodical and controlled rep. Ego seems to override the stress under tension. Personally, I've just ordered this for a home shoulder workout and I hope I can get extra plates that I can add in future.
I just picked some up and they fit my York dumbbells.
When starting or returning after a long time, my opinion (I’m not a professional) is that full body workout is best. Maybe 3 times a week, balance out your push and pull exercises. Leave “arms day” and “shoulder day” for when you need to sculpt your body once you’ve gained the muscle size you’re after.
3 to 4 sets of 8-10 reps is good. You should sort of be struggling your 8th rep onwards but with good form, that’s when you know the weight is right for you.
There’s always exceptions but there’s loads of videos on YouTube by accredited professionals who’ll be able to impart actual knowledge rather than someone like me offering my opinion based on my personal experience.
Most people who buy weights seldom use them.
Metal weights are close to indestructible.
Buy them second hand & you'll get twice the kg for the same money.
I would normally agree with you, 2 years ago anyway, but since the pandemic prices have gone a bit silly. Pre pandemic used cast weights averaged about £1 per kilo. They went to literally 10 times that at the peak, that's when I stopped bothering to add to my home set up. Things have settled since then but you'll still struggle to pick anything up any cheaper than the £1.50 per kilo that argos are offering here, factor in the time taken to source the deals and travel to get them I would say at the moment don't bother, just get these, and then maybe keep an eye out for better used deals in the future.
Plenty of full body workouts on YouTube.
For the past 3 months I've been doing a slightly modified version of Jeremy Ethier's full body workouts (A and B):
Also this from Andy Speer (mixture of strength and cardio):

Not bad advice at all, except for the part about loads of videos by accredited professionals, you are half right, there are loads, but unfortunately far more from people who havnt got a clue what they are taking about, or even worse know exactly what they are talking about but choose to chat absolute nonesense for likes and views by people who don't know any better. Unfortunately the most marketable influencers and channels are the ones where you'll find the most rubbish advice. My suggestion is Sean Nalewanyj, I can't fault a single thing this guy has to say and he will teach you how to safely navigate the online fitness space without getting drawn in by the likes of V-shred (fierce).

Never be put off by rank amatuer wannae be look at me strongman coaches either. if considering the dumbells 10 kg per arm is way north of what most people can handle for arm curls, especially at the onset where starting at 2 to 3 kg for lots of reps to start tonning and strenghthening and building. Its not always about muscle building either, but calorie burning, tone, joint movement and strengthening, preventing deterioration etc.etc.etc.. especially to those of us getting on a bit. Doing reps with 2 cans of beans would be better than nothing just because someones trying to make you feel inadeqaute.
So great spot Random1234, thank you.
Completely different … they’re vinyl , these are cast iron
Thanks for the info. But they are Vinyl and not available widely, atleast not near me
Jeremy is awesome! I did his posture exercises and after a few months had a much bigger range of motion in my shoulder. Shoulder pressing more than I've ever been able to before all because I took time out to work on my mobility.
Thanks for the confirmation
Yes I totally agree, I just didn’t want to get too into the whole who to follow or not in my original post but deffo Sean Nalewanyj is one to follow! I also like Alan Thrall.

Thanks for confirming. I bought the Weight plates, hoping they are compatible with York dumbbells. I will confirm once I pick them up
On ebay you can get a 40kg set, 20kg per dumbell for 40£

They will not be cast iron.
