Still an amazing console backed up by 2 year warranty
It is a great console.
But this doesn't seem to have an official pad supplied. They lobbed in a fake wired one from the image. Should be at least £30 cheaper for that alone.
Oh and cex don't actually honour the supposed 2 year warranty based on past experience on buying an additional Wii console in the past.
We still use our Xbox One X occasionally in a bedroom. I bought a cheapo USB3 to SATA cable and attached it to a a cheapo 240gb SSD. Total cost £30 at most. Have put the most commonly played games onto it. Loading times are at least halved vs the internal HDD.
However at this price I’d look out for a Series S, especially if you have existing controllers and can get the £50 value for the one included.
The Series S is not as powerful graphically as the XB1X so expect 1080p/1440p rather than 4K, however it more than makes up for this as it’s more likely to offer 60/120fps gaming due to the far far faster CPU and insanely quick internal SSD, not to mention the instant resume of the last 5 games played.
Not if you attach via USB3, see my post above. (edited)
Yeah but even with 4k you're still playing the old gen versions of games and sooner or later, I imagine just like every gen they'll move on and stop releasing games on last gen consoles. If you want a console and are on a budget but also want a console that will last longer that lets you play the latest games, a series s is a no brainer over one x, a last gen console. (edited)
There are currently next-gen games you need a Series X|S to play:
Bright Memory
Century: Age of Ashes
Crusader Kings III
Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
Fishing: North Atlantic Enhanced Edition
Hell Let Loose
Judgment
The King of Fighters XV
The Medium
Microsoft Flight Simulator
The Persistence Enhanced
Recompile
The Riftbreaker
Shredders
This War of Mine: Final Cut
Also the likes of A Plague Tale: Requiem, Deathloop, RedFall, Scorn, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, Starfield, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide releasing this year. (edited)
They do honour their 2 year warranty, if the store refused then you should have contacted head office. I've never once been refused for their 2 year warranty and neither has anyone else I know, they'll even take stuff back that has no visible issue as such but if they don't spot the fault they'll just put it back up for sale which i've seen that a lot, especially items they've sold which are obviously mislabelled for a higher price item which I return and point out the mistake but they still list it as the higher price item until I got head office to step in and then I noticed the gradings changed!
The thing to remember with their returns is that for the 1st 6 months they'll refund what you paid for it usually by voucher but never more so you may end up having to pay extra to get a replacement if they won't replace it directly rather than refunding it. If it's after 6 months and up to 2 years then they only refund to the price that they sell that specific item for in-store currently which is going to be less!
Let's highlight what i mean using an example.
Elden Ring on PC.
Which is a Steam Only game.
Yet you can buy it with code in a box from amazon,
buy the code from instant gaming.
buy direct from steam.
buy from Fanatical
buy from Shopto
Etc etc etc etc
So, Elden Ring on PS5.
Physical Media
Playstation Store
Sony stopped retailers selling digital codes for games,
What happens when we take Physical media option away? (edited)
Yeah personally I hope we move on to next gen only games, I imagine all the shortage issues and covid probably delayed the move.
I'm not sure I'd agree that the One X has "better visuals" in general. Given equal workloads the GPUs are very close to one another. The distinction is due to the different CPUs and target markets. One X has a weak CPU that struggles with higher framerates, and is targeted at owners of high-end TVs, so it typically targets 4k30. Series S has a much much better CPU and is targeted at the budget market with lower-end TVs, so even though the GPU is capable of higher resolutions it makes more sense to target 1080p60.
Bear in mind you can also still use external storage with the Series S if you're playing older titles, you're only limited to internal storage for native X|S games.
As times goes by, the One X will make very little sense compared to the Series S. Even now, it's just not a good choice imo.
Yeah any official Xbox one controller will work with any Xbox one or series console.
Get a mega drive instead.
Think you're still missing my point about physical media. I know it's just a license at this stage, but it's cheap.
Anyway, personally I have the X and S with cheap gamepass so you don't need to convince me. Just giving some balance and mentioning the options. Cheers
Definitely agree. Especially if you have a load of 4K movies too. (edited)
I replaced my One X with series X about a month ago. Apart from the fact that I can now install Flight Sim, I honestly, honestly, can’t tell the difference. Not saying this is a great deal though, only that for most casual gamers a One X would be a fine console for some time to
come.
You can play mega drive on a series S.
Can't play series S on a mega drive 😁
4K Bluray player is about 200GBP. Today someone posted refurbrished one for 129GBP and it's almost 200 degrees. Just player. Here you have player + console with hard drive. I have first Xbox One (Day One Edition) and use it daily. It will last me for ages. For me this Xbox Series X is much much better value than getting bluray player itself for almost same price and it's a decent upgrade to original Xbox One.
It have 4K Bluray player is it's worth getting just for that reason as players (refurbrished ones) are 130GBP+ on its own. (edited)
Patching doesn't cost money? It's the price of the games I'm talking about
If someone wants to get a cheap bunch of games, used physical media is king.
SSD makes plenty difference .. even at SATA rates.
Plus it's a Blu-ray player for those who care, also cheap physical titles.
For me, I have a Series X and a Series S in the house but can still see how this could be decent for some.
CEX vouchers at 80% is putting it at £128 if you know about AVForums.
You can't compare Steam which is open platform, they have competition with GOG, Epic, Origin etc... with a closed platform like Xbox or Playstation once Physical media dies then the digital no longer has any competition and they can charge what they like.
Who mentioned anything about ownership? it's about freedom of choice and to avoid these companies forming monopolies on their platforms, that's definitely not good for the consumer.
I won't be getting 'used to it' as soon as consoles go all digital... I stick with PC.. simple as that. I won't be purchasing games from a marketplace that has zero competition.
You will be paying full RRP for all new releases, better get used to it. Oh, and these precious Gamepass and the like.... won't be anywhere near the value they are now.
Sony & Microsoft have been trying to tempt people over to digital the last couple of years, and to do that they need to entice you in. Then when the time comes, slam the door lock you in. It's all about greed. (edited)
Microsoft are playing catchup right now. So they will be bending over backwards to get people onboard.
That will all change if and when they get back on top, my point is that none of this is good for the consumer.
Their vision??? These companies don't care about anything else but money. They are doing all they can right now to stop you lending your game or selling it to someone else to play it. A subscription model works towards this goal, and so does wiping out physical media.
You say cheaper, but it depends how you're calculating that and how you consume media... i mean some people buy games, and sell them. When you buy digital game, you're stuck with it...
When they change the law on digital rights then maybe I will join in..... amigo (edited)
We get it. You are an advocate of the word Amigo and digital gaming. Guess what, others like physical discs, who'd have thought.
Reasons are, sometimes physical is cheaper. Yes, it's true. Not always but hey, it's nice to be able to choose and therefore get the best price across formats. Not so for a Series S.
Also, resale.... Not possible on digital but it's a key feature...after completing a game (or getting bored after a few hours in, or not enjoying it) you have the option to trade in and recover some credit back. I say 'you', but obviously don't mean you, amigo (edited)
A quick Google search would've sorted you out.. but for ease.. yes it has a 4k disc player (and works pretty well as that!)
Can play that on a series s as well
Can't play series s on a SNES though 😁
I just traded 5 games and and a PSP to get a Switch Lite but I'm not sure I'd have forked out £140 in cash for it.
I did the same. I can tell the difference in loading time's even though i ran my games on the one x off an SSD. Also games often run smoother on the series x especially with many running at 60fps. I guess it's future proofing with the series x for myself but if i was sticking to a budget I'd still be happy with the one x. Still a great console
USB3 would be capped at 300mb p/s
Series s speeds runs rings around this multiple times, and are in the GB ps territory. (edited)
Ah the Cheetos grade console
Not to mention that games like cyberpunk and elden ring are pretty undesirable to play on last gen machines. (edited)
Series S is Digital Only.... big NO thanks
Download required or not, remove physical and you remove freedom of choice and take one step closer to price hikes on digital (edited)
Series S might last you longer if your goal is to play the latest games, but if your goal is to play XB1-era games at their best, then the XB1X is the way to go. There's definitely still a market for this and will be for quite a while since the Series X likely wont drop in price significantly for a long time.
And frankly, if you're the type with a 4k display(as you probably would if you're looking at the XB1X) and are a gaming enthusiast(ditto), you should avoid the Series S in general. That's a console for more casual gamers/those who dont care about technical aspects much. (edited)
Get used to it, this will likely be the last generation with physical media.
Inflation is inevitable, but it's not because of physical media existing or ceasing to exist, steam has existed for nearly two decades now and prices have been fine.
You can get plenty of Xbox games digitally cheaper than their physical counterparts.
Modern game discs don't give you ownership, just a license, the days of actually owning a game were already gone a while ago, let's not delude ourselves here. (edited)
Is it really a open platform though when they curate software and take a cut in exactly the same way Nintendo, epic, Google, apple , Sony and Microsoft do from publishers and Devs, I wouldn't say so.
I can buy keys from third parties, just as I can with steam. Plus Microsoft first party keys usually give you access to both the console and PC versions in one purchase.
A lot of steams popularity instead comes from careful desicion's that are good for the consumer experience and most of all careful pricing which is fair.
It's a perfectly valid comparison.
I find the open platform argument amusing though, steam dominates the PC gaming market place, but as soon as epic challenges it, PC users on masse start complaining about the amount of launchers they have now and how they would prefer to use steam only, which one is it 🤦🤦🤦 (edited)
Sounds like a Sony specific issue to me. Trying to tarr everyone with the same brush ain't it amigo.
Like I said when I buy a key for a MS first party game or even buy direct digitally I get access to both the console and PC version because that's their vision, I don't get that if I spend the same amount on a disc, maybe Sony could take some advice there right ?
Oddly enough I've found purchasing on switch digitally works out cheaper in the long run than it does buying physical as well. (edited)
Will it though ? You are hinging this whole thing on a hypothetical, whilst acting on the presumption everyone will do exactly the same thing, like I said, that ain't it amigo.
If anything sticking to their guns would be the easiest win ever for them in the court of public perception, which for the most part translates In to what ?
More volume of sales, shocker that. (edited)
It's not really hypothetical, monopolies have existed for centuries. As in the example above, closed platform and 1 place to purchase from is quite simply a monopoly. There are no two ways about it.
I mean you only need to peek over at what's happening at the Apple store... another monopoly!
Anyway, i've nothing else to add to this now. Take care! (edited)
