Just quick info if anyone interested, wife is in India and roaming data and minutes working like a treat. Can you believe it £1.99 for India roaming. You do need to update the APN settings to:

    APN - uk.lebara.mobi
    Username - wap
    Password - wap

Yes you can get calls from UK but calling within India and receiving calls from UK, overall we had 200 Min however we want to use them. We used our minutes in receiving calls from UK, used family phones to call local numbers.

You can ask as many questions you want, that’s the best part of HuKD community. We are here to help each other.

If you are a really light mobile user, then I highly recommend RWG Mobile. It's free every month after a £5 initial top up. Uses EE network and you don't have to be in Wales or Welsh to have it. I have it as a second SIM for when O2's network is pants.

One thing to remember if buying to use abroad… you probably need to activate it in the UK before travelling. A friend made this mistake (not with Labara though) and was stuck in his destination airport with no phone because the Sim wouldn’t activate on the foreign network.

No, this is not true. There is no date printed on paperwork they send with sim. But no worries, you can activate it within 3 months, done that last time , all works fine with ordered plan and price.

This recurring payment of £1.40 (which can be cancelled at any time) gives you access to a "plan" of inclusive minutes, texts and data. That "plan" can be spent in UK/EU/India in line with their fair usage terms.

If you want to make calls/text/data outside of these "plan" allowances, you'll need to have some "top up" credit (just like pay as you go). Making these "out of plan" calls/texts/data will use credit from your "top up" balance.

If you have no "top up" balance, it just simply won't work - just like pay as you go.

This is why there are no credit checks - you're unable to use anything you've not pre-paid for.

The spend caps you refer to are for contracts that will bill you at the end of the month for what you've used. You go through a credit check to make sure you're good for the money when the bill comes at the end of the month.

    I hope this helps (edited)

Also for anyone planning to use this for Abroad, make sure you activate it here and send a text or make a phone call or it won't work. I got one, took it to France then couldn't use it as I hadn't activated it here first.

    jnm21's avatar

Yes, BUT some phones seem to have issues with Lebara and tethering - my mum's P Smart connects fine, but serves no data. On my P20 Pro when I moved from Vodafone, I got caught out when I needed to tether a spare phone to it - a Google led me to redo the APN, which worked. Have tried everything shy of a factory reset on mum's phone.

Buy this on 4th August and wait with activation till 4th of November. They will charge you £1.40 for the first month and the second month will be paid when you activate it in November. Doing this way will let you use this offer till 3rd April.

Not sure if you can wait longer but I activated my previous sim cards after 3 months without any problems. I've done this several times.

Once I installed the SIM in my phone, I got a configuration message on which I clicked install.

When going (Samsung Phone) to settings > connections > mobile networks > access point names

I can see the newly created "Lebara Internet" entry. When I click on this and compare it with the previous Vodafone entry I can see the Lebara one does NOT have entries for:

Username: Not Set (Vodafone APN this was set to 'wap')
Password: Not Set (Vodafone APN this was set and shows '***')
MMSC: Not Set (Vodafone APN this had a URL 'mms.vodafone.co.uk/ser…s')
MMS Proxy: Not Set (Vodafone APN this had an IP Address '212.183.137.012')
MMS Port: Not Set (Vodafone APN this had '8799')
APN Type: default, supl (Vodafone APN this had 'mms')

I am concerned that there are what appears to be missing (not set) values following the install of the Lebara APN config text message.

    Has anyone set these manually?

What does the username and password provide access to?

This link suggests the missing values need manually populating, but why they weren't done via the config message is strange:

Lebara are a virtual operator and thus not directly signaling or controlling the network, it's highly likely whatever you put in as an APN fields are simply ignored and all traffic routed by their pre-determined routes.

This is common across lots of virtual operators. In fact none of the options you listed are fundamentally required anymore (that's not to say there aren't combination of network and tariffs were they are still needed). The operator can attach this type of information to the tariff coding and en-force whatever they want (which is likely what happens with Lebara, and why you don't need these details at all for a service). It was all a legacy 2G way of doing things that was just carried over

Does anyone else find the Lebara EU roaming allowances massively ambiguous, or is it just me????

From the Lebara home page FAQs - "Do I have to pay for EU roaming? No. You can use all of your plan allowances in the EU for no extra cost (except the Unlimited data plan which can use upto 30GB). For more details click here"...

Which opens up the Ts & Cs - "useful bits to know"

This scheme is designed for customers who primarily live in the UK and ideal for short trips to other places in the EU. To safeguard against abuse, If your roaming usage is greater than usage in the UK over any continuous 120 day period, you will be subject to a surcharge of 0.20p/MB (equivalent to £2/GB) for data, 0.04p/sec (equivalent to 2.4p/min) for outgoing calls, 0.01p/sec (equivalent to 0.6p/min) for incoming calls and 0.8p for sending an SMS.Surcharge is deducted from your Pay As You Go allowance. You will need to top up if you don’t have any.
Surely the FAQ and the "useful bits to know" are a direct contradiction???

So in the UK I use on average 5GB of data a month. Let's say I go to the EU on holiday for 2 weeks without WiFI where I will obviously be using more data.

The FAQs suggest I would be able to use 12GB, but the "useful bits to know" suggest I would be subject to a surcharge of £2 per GB of roaming data that is over my UK usage.

Am I just reading into this a bit too much? Any thoughts please? This seems an absolutely amazing deal compared to the £7 for 12GB I am currently payng with iD Mobile.

    Thanks!

I definitely used more in Europe than a do generally in the UK on my last trip "per week", but I didn't go totally bonkers. In 2 weeks away I used about 5GB, I generally use about 2GB a month but over the 120 days the usage in the UK prior is still high enough.

Overall I wouldn't worry about this policy too much. I'm pretty sure overall it is to stop people just getting this SIM to take abroad and barely using it in the UK at all. Either way you won't get charged if you don't have prepaid credit on it, the data will just stop working. (edited)

I had the exact same experience with Lebara but also couldn't make phone calls (but could receive them). Contacted them and they ignored everything I said in the email and sent me a copy and pasted reply and details about... Windows Phone. What year is it?

Only way I could fix it was moving to another provider. And even that was a pain because I couldn't get a PAC code off them because their online form hasn't been updated since the Samsung S4 was released. Literally, it mentions that phone.

There's reason why they're this price.
