What do garages actually make on a litre these days?

A fair bit according to this (I hadn't heard of this link before until someone mentioned it)

I assume transport will be quite expensive for a lot of garages that rely on fuel deliveries. That's what sets this garage apart as they own their own tankers. (edited)

I drove over to Porthmadog in North Wales midweek and all Essar forecourts on route were substantially cheaper than other retailers so obviously Essar are doing something right. I was astonished to see that the little independent Essar garage in Porthmadog was a staggering 10 pence per litre cheaper than the greedy unmanned Tesco forecourt less than a quarter of a mile away. Shameful profiteering on Tesco's part but they are far from alone.

Really surprised to see Essar showing the wholesale pricing on their website - so the price of unleaded out of the refinery is 1.1319p - distribution should be no more than 2p per litre - certainly a lot of retailers are making a lot of margin

I googled it. That's interesting, I thought you were coming in low at 2p, but that's around £500 per delivery which seems sensible.

The problem is that before, supermarkets would often compete on fuel prices pushing prices down everywhere. Whereas at the moment, it feels like they're verging on price fixing.

Still paying 172.9p for diesel here (Teesside) and that only just came down about a week ago.
Before that it was 179.9p, 185.9p and 190.9p+. (edited)

Sad part is even if the prices do go back down the taxis will not reduce the prices

They are part of a large conglomerate who own the Stanlow refinery which produces 16% of all the petrol and diesel the UK use - retailing fuel isnt really their key business

I live near London and have to head into the office at Chester a couple times a month. I always make sure I work it out to get to this station on fumes!! I found it by accident in May.

At this price it's now a fair bit cheaper to travel in a petrol car than an electric when filling up on the go. Madness

I remember when it went over £1. Everyone said it was a short term thing. Now it's gone close to £2 and its come down a bit but still projected to go over £2 again. So enjoybthe price whilst you can

Yeah, but you're ignoring inflation. When was it a quid last time. I'm guessing but maybe 2010? If so, £1 in 2010 is now £1.42. So you could argue petrol is cheaper now in real terms. I know, in reality it's more complex than this, but it is something people forget.
  31. gary333's avatar
    gary333
So when was it a quid? The point still stands, the difference isn't to the extent people think. Petrol is £145.9 at my local Essar

I think it was close to £1 at the start of 2020 lockdown but not 100%.

Paid £1. 55 p/l for diesel yesterday at Costco. I've more than made up my annual £32 membership fee from the savings, where my local supermarket charges £1.79 p/l. (edited)
