8gb is unacceptable in 2023 (edited)

It would be in Windows laptop. Not in this. Yes I have one. Have had for two years. Never been a problem for heavy Lightroom and Photoshop use.

Elekdirect had a slightly used one for £900 last night, if you don’t mind it not being new.
For new this is a good price. Hotw

Don't know much about Apple products but I'm sure I saw a Youtube video that tested the difference between 16GB RAM with 256GB HDD vs 8GB RAM with 512GB HDD - I think the conclusion was that 16GB ram was significantly faster

It's to do with the storage rather than RAM (weird I know). The base 256GB M2 MacBook Air has a single NAND chip. Meanwhile, higher-storage configurations (512GB and up) use two NAND chips, resulting in nearly twice as fast speeds.

Still have the M1 Air. Best laptop I've owned. Still as fast as when I bought it.

Yeah but what were the others like. Every new laptop I buy is the best I've ever owned or there wouldn't be any point changing it. (edited)

Have some heat OP, thanks! Pay in 5 installments and choose 512GB and that's a great deal!

    How do you do that?

I'm holding out for a 15 inch version.

Does that make this a good deal or a bad deal?

8GB RAM is normally ok but this has single slow SSD so when you have swapping memories the machine will get slower. Shame.

(Remember this is unified memeory. Your GPU will share this memory with CPU and that is why it is small and swapping memories could be frequently involved.)

Not enough for me but probably enough for most. (edited)

Single is correct, it would only be slow if you’re using massive files. The 512GB will be faster.

Can this be connected to a larger screen for home working ?
    Nathan_Cai's avatar
yes but only 1 external screen. Cannot do 2.

    pros and cons

8gb on arm memory management is probably okay- not a fan but most people probably wont care
60 hz ips display is almost comical- its like going back to the early noughties. please dont actually use this display unless you are on a train- have no good TV - never actually had a good viewing experience
carpal tunnel keyboard- not the worst, not the best
good trackpad, good speakers, good cpu
ancient OS that hasnt seen any innovation in 15 years- macos is terrible. please try out gnome on linux- its like seeing what macos will look like in 10 years- you will thank yourself
battery life is genuinely amazing though

    overall 7/10
purchase over any windows laptop for sure. design hasn't changed in a decade but it still looks better than everyone else.
