Netflix's cheapest "with ads" tier has been upgraded from "Basic with adverts" to "Standard with adverts" for the same price, £4.99 a month. This means that for accepting ads and no downloads you now get 1080p (up from 720p) and two streams (up from one). It's an effective saving of £6 a month from Standard rather than £2 a month from Basic.

The Basic tier remains the same so presumably it will be allowed to wither on the vine.

How many ads is it? Start of movie or throughout?

"You can expect to see an average of about 4 minutes of ads per hour (this may vary based on the title you're watching).

You'll see ads before and during select TV shows and movies. Newly released Netflix movies only have pre-roll.

When an ad break starts, the number of ads in the ad break appears in the upper-right corner. Fast forward and skip aren't available when an ad is playing."

Until they sort out the 4k package I’m out …. Why should I pay as a single person , what a whole family home does?

Why do you pay for a whole car when there’s families out there paying the same for the same car?

Just move to Turkey, if you know what I mean

Started to do that but then I realized I have managed without it for all those years and there is enough rubbish to watch without paying to watch more. Even at the Turkish price its a no for me.

Thank you for this, I was on Basic but needed 2 screens so had just put it back up to Standard as of March, now I've put it to this Standard with ads from May as 1080p and ads are fine with me so long as we get the 2 screens.

Also as a side note the kids profiles have no ads on them as I wanted to check that as my little ones have their own kids profiles. (edited)

When it says some movies and shows not available......which ones?

Probably worth checking Netflix shows you want to see on Justwatch and seeing if they are available on Netflix with ads.

Here's the full "with ads" list:

Wow HD 1080p that's amazing in 2023. I can't even believe this isn't the standard lowest package. The fact they do 720p is an embarrassment.

Not really, depends on viewing distance mainly, TV size and your TV’s ability to upscale. I’m betting you’ve not even watched this in 720p.

I've had netflix auto billing since 2018, around £14/15 with their top tier package - And we only have one 4K TV in the house (which is my monitor!). The rest of the family use 1080p, and then again, it's just me and my brother who actually use it!

Worse thing is, I barely watch netflix. Thanks OP for having this post, I'm on the fence of downgrading or just cancelling my membership. I'm sure I can find the shows online, plus none really intrest me as much these days.

EDIT: Logged into Netflix, I've been a member since ' September 2014' paying full whack. Can't believe I've almost paid 2 grand for something I barely watch. Moved to basic with ads immidiately (edited)

how many ads does this have? is It like more 4. as that drives me nuts for some reason, but normal and breaks on the TV don't🥴.

currently paying for the netflix basic package, but considering getting rid of it as I think the quality of the actual programme's isn't great anymore.

not sure if it's just me, but all the netflix documentaries follows the same pattern and pack the series out with absolute guff in the middle.

1080p in 2023 is laughable. Can't believe 720 was even an option. Disney have 4K HDR at half the price of Netflix.
    KangTC's avatar

720p was actually an upgrade from 480p.

So, standard with adds is £2 cheaper than basic without adds and you get FHD instead of HD. Nice one...I may consider 'downgrading' to Standard with adds...Hot! (edited)

Been signed up since 2014 which was a shock to me. Finally decided to cancel. There's about 1-2 series per year that actually interest me. My only regret is not cancelling it last year when I decided to get Disney+

I had Netflix for 18 months when we had sky I think it was £6 through sky add on it was ok but they never seemed to add enough new stuff and left old stuff on there permanently I definitely wouldn’t pay to have adds in it ITVX does that for free!
    KangTC's avatar

ITVX without ads is only £6 though. Whether Netflix is good value at £11 is another question.

They make a lot more money with this "discounted tier" that it should be even less in costs.

There was a statement they actually make more money on the advertising tier compared to their premium tiers.
    KangTC's avatar
    KangTC Author
The suggestion was that they made more money on the advertising tier at this price. They aren't making £11 from showing adverts.

Their foreign shows are about the only new stuff they put out that's consistently decent these days. The majority of their American Originals are crap.

It's a long way away from when every Friday used be Netflix day, when they almost always had something good releasing.
