sorted byI've used it pretty much daily. I've frequently overstuffed it with groceries, the zip straining but holding out just fine but -
The only major issue, that I haven't had happen with previous rucksacks of similar design, is if I've been running for a bus with the rucksack not full but with, for instance, a fairly heavy single cork yoga block, bouncing around inside it as I've run; that has caused it to unzip and the yoga block to fall out. I had that happen a couple of times, have since wrapped the yoga block in a sweater so it bounces around less! To be clear, there are two zips but I never zip up from the bottoms on either side to have the zips meet at the top, as that would obviously be a point of weakness and a cause of it unzipping, esp when full; no, I always draw the zip(s) all the way around from one side, yet the bouncing yoga block still unzipped the bag on two occasions.
It's funny to think about that, now, running like mad to get to a relaxing yoga class, but perhaps something to note if you're frantically running to get somewhere on time or running after a bus, perhaps!
I haven't had that happen with similar designs in past years. If you're someone who frequently carries a fairy heavy/squared off items, perhaps do as I now do when hurrying to get somewhere; keep the rucksack off your back and just hold it from the nylon top handle, or bunch together the more comfortable-to-hold backstraps and use as a handle; I think you're less likely to end up with something you just bought, broken on the pavement. I imagine this could happen with most budget price rucksacks but it's a new one by me; perhaps a beefier zip (though it's not of poor/rough feeling quality, zips smoothly enough) it would hold fast. Certainly with the rucksack absolutely stuffed to bulging, with both zips drawn to one side, it doesn't unzip itself, even if I'm in a hurry.
Three, for me, relatively minor issues but they might bug you (I'll add another hopefully obvious one, if expecting a downpour, just line the inside with a large carrier bag).
One is something that goes with the design, though it happens a little less with my other rucksacks, so I'll mention it, here. If I go for a long walk, the pretty comfortable padded shoulder bands periodically slip off one shoulder or the other and I have to hoik it back up. A familiar experience, right? just that it happens more often with me with this rucksack than with my others. That could be bad me design, rather than bad rucksack design! I keep meaning to add a horizontal chest strap to stop the slippage. Has never bothered me on supermarket walks, just on longer walks but I think budget daypacks, like this, aren't really meant for thot, though I do like to travel light when on holiday.
Another is something you might have experienced when doing up the zip on a jacket when you're in a hurry and the fabric gets chewed into the zip and you have to carefully undo the zip and try again! An occasional annoyance, avoided by not being in a hurry, right?! though wouldn't be funny if you were hurrying to pack to make it to the airport on time! With a brief bit of patience, the fabric is easily enough extricated! Doesn't happen with my other rucksacks but doesn't happen to me often, mainly when in a bit of a hurry. I have two of these rucksacks, happens with both, one more than the other, might not happen with yours.
After being in the washing machine a couple of times, I could feel the padding at the bottom shifted a bit out of place but that's not a bother to me, the basic integrity of the rucksack has held out, fine, still looks absolutely great, my white version washes to an almost pristine white with regular washing powder at a 40 degree wash, with just a tiny bit of wear on the front which can cause some dark fuzz to adhere to it, which is easily brushed off with a wet flannel after it comes out of the washing machine.
I wash it with other whites, otherwise the plastic clasps rattle around; I've tried handwashing but it didn't remove the slight yellowing and minor dirt scuff marks, which I was relieved the washing machine wash did remove; I appreciate white isn't an ideal colour for a backpack but it looks great, improves your visibility if cycling. I just witnessed a really horrible car/bicycle accident, so am even more acutely aware of the importance of high visibility.
What I love about mine, compared to my more expensive, more obviously durable/rugged daypacks (Costco fairly frequently has great offers on those) is it is SO pleasingly light in weight compared to those.
When it's empty on the walk to the supermarket, it's easy to forget you're wearing one, whereas my more expensive ones, though lovely quality, I find myself checking to see if they are really empty, resent the extra weight. On holiday, if walking everywhere, though it makes sense to have a durable daypack that you can always depend on, if you zip up in a hurry and run around, I still think it's almost worth just going with this cheap daypack, just to save carting around the extra not-insignificant weight that the thick-padded, serious daypacks have. I increasingly feel the same way about heavy jackets and sure, you can buy some light weight padded ones, I've had a couple from TKMAX but they've not been as durable. These days, I'd rather layer a bunch of t-shirts under a light-weight breathable jacket if it gets seriously cold, than feel a bit constrained by extra weight.
TLDR, sorry the above is so long. Anyway, despite some of the minor issues that you might expect with a budget rucksack, I love mine and would happily buy again if only the white one would come back in stock, which over the last year it hasn't, though I fairly frequently check, I love it that much. I haven't been able to find one that looks exactly like it.
And yes, I think I'll probably buy one of both! The last two rucksacks I bought, turned out to be for small kids! Got to laugh, always check the small print, though sometimes Amazon lacks important details.
For what it's worth, I got a red-coloured one for my mother, over a year ago, which is possibly a little more durable than mine, though I think that's down to mine being a little bit worn after all these years. For what it's worth, if you have a colour-accurate/calibrated computer screen, the red colour in the photo was of a pretty closely matching shade to what I received. If the grey or blue one is anywhere near as good a basic but sound quality - HOT! (edited)
I've been after a cheap big heavy duty bag for a while to bring home shopping in when I cycle to my local shop.
Noclouds thanks for the review, its people like you that make fickle buyers like me decide to purchase stuff!!!
I've amended my review, above with hopefully the obvious - if expecting a downpour, just line the inside with a large carrier bag, I do that even with my more expensive rucksacks.
My much more expensive rucksacks that I got from Costco are heavy duty but... Frustratingly, I spent so much time comparing and pondering features, padding, durability, breathability, but you know, even when empty, they feel heavy, which put me off them, a lot, sadly, despite their being feature rich, which this one is anything but. If you're carrying fragile things, impact absorbing foam makes sense compared to a basic rucksack like this which has a padded back and straps but no padding at the front. It doesn't have a breathable web at the back, so if you're wearing it all day on a hot day, yeah, you're going to sweat, though I went for the white model to reflect heat and most of the time I'm using it in Scotland where heat isn't a worry!
The expensive ones sit in a cupboard, looking like they belong to someone who has a lot more money than me - but I always just grab this one, a few carrier bag-sized black Ikea bags in there; I like to distribute weight between shoulders/back and arms, rather than rest everything on shoulder/back, I seem to get less lower back pain that way if I'm doing the 15 mile round trip power walk to Costco (I find gym treadmills boring!).
I used to travel a lot and sticking to just a minimum of hand luggage made getting in and out of airports quickly, a pleasure, so to speak! I would carry a pocketable rucksack in it (really not great because the straps/back on those things aren't padded!), in case I bought stuff on my holiday, which was partly the reason for going on holiday, to pick up clothing bargains, etc, so I'd travel as light as possible going out, including wearing several layers of clothes on the plane, just so as I could keep to a small-ish rucksack. A rucksack like this one is a lot more malleable than one with semi-stiff padding, so I can shove it into a locker quickly.
Anyway, blah! I hope you like yours! Hope the quality is still the same. It feels like a strange thing to have raved about and taken so much time to pick out the minor faults but, I've used it every day, for almost three years, now, and apart from the occasional zip snagging annoyance when I've been in too much of a hurry, it has been something dependable in my life. I like picking it up, it makes me enthusiastic to get out there, which my classier looking, heavier ones from Costco, really don't, so in that sense it has changed me, my way of doing things, for the better. Yet it's just this... really basic rucksack, that somehow doesn't suck! (edited)
