In the opening scene, Kaneda and Tetsuo stumble upon a secret government project to develop telekinetic humans, apparently for use as weapons. Critics Consensus
Akira is strikingly bloody and violent, but its phenomenal animation and sheer kinetic energy helped set the standard for modern anime. Read critic reviews

Other than the missing HDR, this version also has DNR grain removal and not so great audio, apparently.
I wish these studios took more care when releasing 4K discs since they're such a niche product and we're paying a premium for these things because we want the best possible home theatre experience.

I was going to say, it's hard to know whether the stock they have are the old non-HDR discs or the new HDR replacement ones.

You're kind of stuffed if you're unlucky and recieve the older stock. Funimation said that the issue was resolved back in May 2021, but you just don't know how long stock has been sitting in the retailer's warehouse. At least the returns are super easy with Amazon in case you get a dud.

So should I buy another version, when I already own the video, dvd and blue ray? I mean surely after buying that many copies I own the rights to the film and I should be getting all the copyright money right?

Answer: no. Best to get the HDR version!

The original VHS with the original dub is still the best, the remastered versions ruin the atmosphere by thinking they are helping by cleaning up the image, but end up ruining it.

The re-dub is terrible as well, the original amplifies the atmosphere.

    Still have my cells.
