Some of you will need to buy a meaty cooler for this.
I highly recommend the Thermalright Peerless Assasin 120 SE (6 heat pipe) or the Phantom Spirit 120 SE (7 heat pipe).
Both on Amazon for £34-40 (depending on colour/fan lighting).

They are Noctua NH-D15 killers, fantastic value (I've installed both in recent builds).
The PA will do the job just fine, the PS is just a little better (around 5c lower with a CPU like this). (edited)

Bought the Thermal right peerless AE 120 SE myself after contemplating dropping 300 quid on a 360 rad AIO (mine died) but opted for this after I read just how good reviews were!

Went for it. Was toying with AM5 but that would be a total rebuild. This should give me a few more years.

Needed a cooler too so looking at Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB CPU Air Cooler, 6 Heat Pipes Cpu cooler, Dual 120mm TL-C12C-S PWM Fan, Aluminium Heatsink Cover, AGHP Technology, for AMD AM4/AM5 Intel 1700/1150/1151/1200 amzn.eu/d/g…emw

Seemed to have good reviews and a reasonable price.

Regarding the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (I got the non-RGB coz I'm not down with the youths anymore), I set the fan curve to basically idle at 25% (pretty much silent) speed on my Ryzen 3600, and even hammering all twelve threads the CPU stays below 60C, so the fans never have to speed up. Superb cooler for the price.

Just bought a 5950x, delivering tomorrow, is that overkill? Have a 3090. Should I get this instead?

    fishmaster
5950X is a true productivity CPU. 16 physical cores giving 32 threads. The 5800X3D is a true gaming CPU 8 physical cores giving 16 threads. You don't need more than 8 cores for gaming this generation and the added advantage of the 5800X is the 3D cache which some games can take advantage of. However it comes at the expense of some compute performance. A regular 5800X has slightly more compute performance. A 5950X completely trashes a 5800X3D for compute so it's far better for productivity, Blender, encoding, Adobe, audio recording with multiple VSTs, running simultaneous heavy duty applications, streaming whilst gaming all that good stuff.

If you're just gaming and not streaming too then a 5800X3D is all you need on AM4 platform for gaming paired with a decent GPU.

No brainer if you're on an older AMD platform that's compatible.

Only complaint, is that they can run hot, 5800X was one of the hottest 50XX CPU's and stacking more cache on top doesn't help.
    johnboylan12's avatar
    johnboylan12
Undervolting it solves that. Mine runs between 55c and 63c most of the time.

    Some1 wanna buy my 5600x?

If it ain’t so much of a hassle to sell my 5600x.
And I doubt the gain will be that worthwhile for me
    face-crab's avatar

Not worth the upgrade unless you're not achieving the frames you want in CPU intensive titles that can utilise the large 3D cache.

    Average performance increase from 5600x to 5800x3d is 1.5 % at 4K with 3080.

I bought this a few months back at £360. Gulp. But it's had good use. If you're on the fence snap it up. Best gaming you'll get on am4 and should last a few generations at least!! I'm using with b450, 3600 cl14 and currently a 3080 (soon to be 7900 xtx) and it's golden.

I went from a 2600 to a 5600x and it was probably 1.4x performance with a 3070, as it happens I ended up pulling trigger on this 5800x3d also to replace that 5600x (just for future proofing at this price)

Still seems massively overpriced to me for a last gen product with a 3 year old core design. Similar price to the 13600k which beats it in gaming and absolutely obliterates it in productivity. (edited)
    The.Fat.Cat's avatar
    The.Fat.Cat
Makes no difference what gen it is, all that matter is gaming performance for the price.
The 13600k is not only more expensive, but utterly useless to those wanting to upgrade their AM4 systems...

As for productivity, that's not the market this CPU is aimed at. It's still not exactly a slouch though. (edited)

This is a good deal but aimed for people getting more life from the AM4 platform.

( This is the last cpu ( generation wise) for the AM4 platform )

If you need MB /RAM consider AM5 instead or Intel. (edited)

Depends on your monitor , 1080p is doable by any GPU below 400, the issue is maxing a 144hz 1440p monitor which requires a 600-700 GPU like Rx 6900xt

Been holding off to upgrade from 5600x (eyeing for a while to future proof rest of my pc, save me upgrading rest of it now for a good 3 years).

Amazon 5 quid off voucher and this price finally sealed the deal, figure I may get 100 back for the 5600x in it's box if lucky.

Amazing price on a phenomenal gaming CPU for those on AM4 and dont have enough money to switch to an AM5 setup, ddr5 just yet.
Totally made my VR DCS and MSFS 2020 experience improve sooooo much from a 5600X.
I got it at £349 in the last round of sales. For those on the fence, just get it! Even gives a Intel 12900K a run for it's money in gaming. (edited)

Hi regarding my order # 203-3972272-2469156

I can see the product has had a significant price reductions well as a promo attached to it, rather then return the product and repurchase surely I could be reimbursed the price gap and promo
I paid 295 and the product is now 280 + 33% Off on Xbox Game Pass for PC

    08:12Jhon adam | Customer ServiceOh I see.
I understand your concern and your point Jake
May I know if you have any issues with the item?

08:13 I wouldn't normally be bothered but its over a 5% price decrease plus an added promo
no its fantastic I would like to keep it ideall

08:14Jhon adam | Customer ServiceI understand.
If I were on your side, I will also feel how you feel right now.
I am also a customer outside this job and I will feel the same way as you do.
Unfortunately Jake, we really don't have any option to process post-order price adjustments.
We work hard to make sure our prices are as competitive as possible and may from time to time change our prices.
As much as I would really love to reimburse the price difference of the product.
I am afraid that we don't have an option to do so.

23 Game AverageWhen CPU limited, the 5800X3D offers Ryzen 5 3600 owners massive performance gains. Using the Radeon 6950 XT at 1080p we see on average 48% greater 1% lows, with average frame rates boosted by 46%. Even at 1440p, the 5800X3D provided up to 35% greater performance on average.

As you'd probably expect, the margins with the Radeon 6600 XT are greatly reduced, but even so at 1080p the 5800X3D was on average up to 24% faster, but then just 13% faster at 1440p.

Not sure if worth it unless you got high end GPU??? (edited)
    t1redmonkey's avatar
    t1redmonkey
yeah does depend on your GPU. i have a 6700XT and play on 1440p, so i'd probably only get like a 15% boost going from the 3600 to the x3d at the moment, so for those on low/mid range GPUs with a limited budget, it might be a better strategy to upgrade your GPU first and then go to the x3d at a later date.

If it's a choice of one or the other buying now then definitely the 5800X3D for gaming. It IS the best gaming CPU on the socket in any scenario and will bring up minimum framerates a lot from a 3600, even at 4K.
