This Celestron NexStar 102 SLT telescope is out of this world! Whether you are a new or experienced amateur astronomer, this fantastic NexStar 102 SLT Telescope is for you. It gives you accurate views of land, sky and beyond which will leave you utterly amazed. This short-tube produces bright, clear and crisp images of the Moon, planets, galaxies, nebulae and so much more! The f/6.5 focal ratio ensures that plenty of light reaches your eye, whilst the quality of light is improved thanks to the high quality optical coatings.

With no tools required, the pre-assembled, adjustable high quality stainless steel tripod and quick release fork arms and tubes can be set up in minutes.

Refractor Telescope

A refractor telescope is the traditional expectation of what a telescope looks like. It features a long tube with an objective lens located at the front and the eyepiece at the back. Focusing takes place at the rear of the telescope whilst the front objective lens refracts the light gathered to form a crisp and high contrast image in the eyepiece. Refractor lenses are a rugged design with a sealed tube, making this the perfect choice for those new to star gazing and younger users. Refractors excel at moon and planetary observations, however are also capable of viewing stars.

Altazimuth Mount

An Altazimuth mount or “AZ” is a simple design using two axes to support or rotate the telescope, restricted to up, down, left or right motions. Its simple design makes this mount easy to use and allows a quick manual adjustment by the user. The simplicity of use makes this mount a great choice for a beginner’s telescope, or as a secondary instrument for quick and easy use. The limitation of this type of mount is if you are planning to view one object all evening, constant small adjustments in all directions will be needed, as the stars and planets rise and set in the sky like the sun.

So this doesn't need so much adjustment and calibration than usual telescopes? I was put off many years ago by buying one that needed that a lot and was a chore, was rarely used.

When set up, you're good for the evening.

Setting up however is a slight chore. Idk if the handset has changed in 15 years but you have to enter your location, time and date each session as the handset doesn't remember these. It's not much hassle but still takes 5-10 minutes and if you observe regularly, it starts to put you off. Once aligned nothing will change unless you run out of power or switch the scope off. On rechargeable batteries I never ran out of juice but then again, my sessions were never that long.

Even lower than last time, cool. I thought they were just selling their last stock, as the SLT line was replaced, but they keep coming up with more?
    Quoting myself:

I had an SLT for a while 15 years ago. That's a very low price nowadays and beginners usually enjoy the scope.
The tripod is very light, causing vibrations, I found that it could be significantly be improved by adding 5kg weight to the accessory tray and at the same time having it stand on rubber anti-vibration dampening pads in the case of hard floor.

I too owned this scope and paid more than this 15 years ago including delivery. It's still going strong although I've gave it to my son and I now own an 8" Dobsonian.

It's a good beginners scope, I've viewed Neptune and Uranus thanks to the Goto mount and attached a webcam and imaged the Moon and planets. Buy a pair of 7 x 50 binoculars to compliment this and you'll have something that will do for quite a few years.

Does this track and follow stars?
    GlentoranMark's avatar
Yes but not in a traditional telescope way. You level the scope by adjusting the legs and when you get it level, you point it at 3 bright objects (Moon, planets or stars)in different parts of the sky. You don't need to know the names of the objects and the scope does the rest. It keeps track by using a stepper motor which moves across and then up or down in very small amounts. It tracks particularly well. This method isn't suitable for detailed photographs but fine enough for visual observing.

@xenophon It becomes a bit of a chore setting up. The whole process takes 5-10 minutes which might not sound like much but in that time, I could have got my binoculars out and had a quick session. I also know my way around the sky and can star hop so I moved from this to a Dobsonian after I spotted a bargain on Gumtree.

It's a good entry level scope though and far better than some of the toy scopes that go ultra hot on here because of the price.

Handy to find anything in the Selfservative budget that doesn't make the rich richer or promises that aren't in the distant future

I purchased some crappy telescope from Lidl for my kids a good few years ago and we all loved sitting up on the South downs on summer nights and camping out and watching the starssand moon. The thing literally fell apart but it was something I'd love to have considered carrying on but purchasing something that would have been suitable for our basic needs was bewildering and seemed expensive. My kids were looking at a telescope that had an app which made tracking really simple but the price was way over what I was prepared to pay.
Does this scope use an app?
    Jules.Tohpipi's avatar
The posted deal is an excellent telescope. However, to suit your requirements of a less expensive telescope, that's less complicated, and uses an app then the below would be an ideal choice.

    firstlightoptics.com/cel…tml

The phone sits in a cradle on the telescope and the phone's camera maps the sky above automatically. You then choose on the phone what you want to see e.g. Andromeda galaxy and the phone then displays arrows for where to push the telescope to find it. It's not motorised.

This might seem like a flaky gimmick but the online astro community is reporting this new Celestron system works extremely well indeed i.e. as advertised. (edited)
