    Just for the Record

Any idea why the DCH273N is more expensive at £187 but has less impact energy (2.1J) (edited)

    I have the dch133. I didn't know this did the dch033.

But the SDS goes through concrete so easily. My builder borrowed it as his was at home and was surprised how good a cordless SDS drill have come along.

Great price for these bad boys, the difference between even a basic SDS drill and a top end normal drill with hammer action is night and day. These dewalt ones are fab on the 18V platform. The only time I had to change the battery was when I was using a 150mm core drill bit going through a buttload of wall for vent conduit. Normal holes with a drill bit, even thick 25mm thick ones will barely dent a full 5AH battery. Not having it corded makes it safe for ladder use and other awkward situations where a cord can be a massive hindrance and safety concern. (edited)

In summary, dch273 costs about £60 more, and whilst it's weaker (takes about 20% longer to drill) it's smaller so fits in gaps between ceiling joists, it also has less vibration. (edited)

Can I use my normal dewalt combi drill bits in this?

    It only takes SDS bits.

Could you use this without a battery? So just with a cord. Serious question because I don't have DeWalt tools so would need a battery...

Looking to buy an SDS drill to put up some blinds around the house but stuck between this Dewalt or the Makita DHR171Z - would welcome any thoughts/opinions on which one is better to get?
    Jonwillis's avatar
    Jonwillis
The DHR171Z has 1.2j of power, the dch033 is 2j. So the DeWalt is stronger.

However both drills are cordless, so the key question is do you already have any batteries for either system?

Ghanks for pointing out the power difference. So how comes the DeWalt is cheaper with more power?

I have a Makita impact and standard drill driver with both using 2 different batteries so hoping that 1 of those use the same battery as the Makita.

Surprised you have to different batteries, do you have a mix of V12 and v18 tools?

Unless you use the SDS alot it might not be worth switching systems as you turn have to factor in £40-50 for a DeWalt battery.

I'm not too sure if I'm honest, the Makita tools and battery are inherited from my dad and are the 2 different types as can be seen in my pics.

Okay thanks for the help and advice all, appreciate it. Might just settle for the lower power in Makita but atleast don't have to worry about buying a battery and charger.

Other option is to get a corded SDS drill, again, no need for battery or charger.

Fyi the grey battery is 18v li-ion so looks like a new battery.
Can't see any marking on the black one, might be an old NiMH style battery.
