sorted byIt's not required but I think if you were to play anything, I would play Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It's obviously much more accessible than 1 and 2 on GameCube/Wii and has the most content, refined mechanics and control options. 2 follows on straight after 1 following Olimar so you would have to play them both to get the most out of them. However 3 is much more standalone and beginner friendly, with new captains that are experiencing things for the first time.
There are small references to the captains of the first two games but I think you would be completely fine to jump straight into Pikmin 3 to see all the Pikmin types and different enemies. You can even play all of it with a second player to help out.
Looking at the trailer, there are underground dungeons that were featured in Pikmin 2 but I think you can just play Pikmin 4 to experience that as 2 is definitely the most difficult and unforgiving game in the series (fun for veterans though). (edited)
