What are Pikmin?
Pikmin come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours! For instance, Red Pikmin don’t sweat fiery obstacles, Blue Pikmin are great swimmers, and the newly discovered Ice Pikmin keep things cool by freezing enemies and the environment around them.
Individual Pikmin may be small and vulnerable, but together they can tackle even the biggest of challenges! Use their miniature might and some strategy to overcome everything in your way on this strange, new planet.

An adorable canine companion
Oatchi, the Space Dog, will also join you on your adventure. This dependable companion can smash obstacles, transport heavy objects and carry Pikmin on his back through your travels. Together, no challenge is too big for these adventurers!

Do I need to play the original trilogy first?

Quick answer. Absolutely download the Pikmin 3 Deluxe demo to try out the action both in the story mode where you explore and collect and a few missions that are smaller challenges. You can even transfer your progress to the main game and unlock Hard mode for the story mode from the start if you want more of a challenge.

It's not required but I think if you were to play anything, I would play Pikmin 3 Deluxe. It's obviously much more accessible than 1 and 2 on GameCube/Wii and has the most content, refined mechanics and control options. 2 follows on straight after 1 following Olimar so you would have to play them both to get the most out of them. However 3 is much more standalone and beginner friendly, with new captains that are experiencing things for the first time.

There are small references to the captains of the first two games but I think you would be completely fine to jump straight into Pikmin 3 to see all the Pikmin types and different enemies. You can even play all of it with a second player to help out.

Looking at the trailer, there are underground dungeons that were featured in Pikmin 2 but I think you can just play Pikmin 4 to experience that as 2 is definitely the most difficult and unforgiving game in the series (fun for veterans though). (edited)
