Review:

Enter the Norse realm
His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive… and teach his son to do the same.

Grasp a second chance
Kratos is a father again. As mentor and protector to Atreus, a son determined to earn his respect, he is forced to deal with and control the rage that has long defined him while out in a very dangerous world with his son.

Journey to a dark, elemental world of fearsome creatures
From the marble and columns of ornate Olympus to the gritty forests, mountains and caves of pre-Viking Norse lore, this is a distinctly new realm with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters and gods.

Engage in visceral, physical combat
With an over the shoulder camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before, fights in God of War™ mirror the pantheon of Norse creatures Kratos will face: grand, gritty and grueling. A new main weapon and new abilities retain the defining spirit of the God of War series while presenting a vision of conflict that forges new ground in the genre.

Settings need to be played with to get best performance from the Steam Deck, here's what I use:

    In-game settings:

    Display mode Borderless

Motion Blur / Film Grain Off

AMD FSR 2.0 Quality, FSR Sharpening 0.3

    Texture Quality Low

Model Quality / Shadows / Reflection / Ambient Occulusion Original

    Anisotropic Filter Ultra

Disable in-game FPS limit and use mangohud to cap frame rate to 30. If you want to save battery, cap TDP to 9 and GPU to 1100.

How's the game play on this port compared to PS4/ps5 versions?

It is a very good port. Gameplay is exactly the same, graphics are higher fidelity if you have the hardware to ramp up the settings.

Bought this ages ago for Ps4.. finally started playing the other day. I can't get into it. It just seems to be "walk fixed path to scripted fight" repeat, repeat, dull boss fight.

I'll give it another go but I think I'm just too used to open world games.

I was exactly this when I bought it in about 2020. I sort-of liked it, it was amazingly impressive, but just could not get into it, felt confined to one area, and shelved it. The biggest problem for me was that some of the puzzles seemed over-convoluted and I was constantly back-tracking (playing in small spurts certainly did not help). But when Ragnarok came out I thought I'd give it another proper go.

And, boy, am I glad I did. I finally realised that I didn't have to do every single task the game threw at me. Somehow the puzzles started clicking and were enjoyable, I was able to beef Kratos and Atryu up quite a bit and I started opening up areas and doing those rather than sticking to a single area. Turned what I thought was a decent game into one of the best I've ever played.

Biggest bit of advice I can give is to tone the difficulty down to the easiest level (and it still ain't easy). For a combat game the combat isn't the be-and-end-all. Play it for the story.
