I haven't tried this particular model, but I have tried a number of 4g routers, and they seemed fine at first but the performance dropped. Putting the SIM back in a phone got the speed back, but then trying the router again was low speed. I even tried external antenna for router

I am now using mobile phone as hotspot. Faster and cheaper

Anyone know of a cheap 4G/5G router with ethernet? I'd like to be able to have one as backup connected to my home router in case the wired broadband goes down.

    Dodge,
I just bought a TPlink Archer MR400 AC1200 from Amazon to run my wired gear. The clowns in openreach haven't been able to sort a problem they caused in my street last week, so have had to tether off my phone for a week not ideal when I'm going out and the Mrs wants to watch telly. So problem solved. Depending on what you want to spend there's a single band model TL-MR6400 for £20 less.

    Hope that helps. (edited)

Does this produce Wi-Fi from 3/4G phone signal or 3/4g from Wi-Fi signal ?

I need the later if it exists as my mum lives in the middle of nowhere and can’t get any phone signal from any network

This device produces wifi from 3/4g. A mobile network which supports wifi calling could solve your mums issue. Lots do including EE, O2, 3 and Vodafone.

Yeah I've got a 5G D-Link one that cost me £400. Did the job but I wasn't that impressed considering I could get better speeds and signal tethering from my mobile phone.

I also tried a Zyxel 5G router too but I kept having to reboot it so ended up returning it. Signal and speeds were worse too.

You could get second-hand cheap dual sim 5G Chinese phone for less than £50. It is doing a better job, 5G, dual sim, better battery, could be used as emergency phone. (edited)

I have one of these, it’s ok, but nothing special. Didn’t work in the US, which was one of the reasons I wanted it. Really struggling to find one that works worldwide, so I am sticking to tethering to an old Huawei phone, which works a treat so far.

Thanks for the comments about using an old mobile phone as a hotspot. That's all I've ever used away from home and always wondered what the benefit of a MiFi would be. None from the comments on here as far as I can see.

I have an old one of these and now get an insecure protocol message when connecting to it, it does not support latest WiFi security standard. Plus it has some non-removable EE references in it, despite being unlocked. Nowadays I use a spare phone as the emergency hotspot, it's perfect.

I think this is an Apple-specific thing. I got the same error message on a family member's iPhone when switching home broadband from BT to Virgin Media.

I have it, use it with my mobile internet as a daily driver. It's OK, it does the job, I'm not too sure what I could expect more from it.

LTE cat4 is so 2012... Of course, it's value for money, but for few quid more is possible to find Mifi cat6 (300Mbit). Or maybe find and old smartphone collecting dust in some drawer.

Can the Wifi hotspot be hidden after connecting a device?
Can the battery be removed if left plugged in 24/7? (edited)

When will these become cheap? I paid £30 for a Huawei in 2013 and I'd quite like to update. Even though it still works fine

I don’t have this one, but have a 4G Huawei one. Bought an EE one year 120Gb sim from Argos to go in it and seems to work well for internet including watching occasional tv in a camper van. Handy to have a different data provider to my phone as well.

If you was looking for a 4G (and also does 3G) router to use at home, as your home broadband I would highly recommend you look for a second hand Huawei AI Cube B900 on eBay.
This has an excellent signal all around my house and works a treat with a £16 Unlimited Data Smarty SIM Card.
It is also a built in Alexa/Bluetooth Speaker, and the quality of this is also very good.
It allows for up to 100 devices to be connected to it.

Obviously the one I am suggesting is quite a beast, size wise and wouldn't recommend for when traveling around. (edited)

Would this work on a cruise ship in Norway and do you have to pay any other charges to get connected? Many thanks
    g-diddy's avatar

It might when you are in port and be able to connect to a local mobile network.

However with ships being a huge metal box, you would probably need to have an outside cabin and place the Wifi Router in the window of your cabin or on the balcony to get a mobile signal.

Just consider many UK mobile networks will only let you put the SIM in a phone when roaming and don't allow you to tether while abroad and taking advantage of free EU roaming.

I thought this was a bargain, but it is NOT, not to me at least.

The quality of the product is miserable.
    1. download speed is only 2Mbps while the upload speed reached 10Mbps. The same sim card permance 28Mbps with other device.
    2. The lights on the unit is very doggy. Sometimes the power lights kept flashing red while not in charge. And still in green while in charge.
    3. The reset button doesn't work
    4. When the unit went into standby mode, the power button can't turn the unit off.

This unit is cheap, but I think it is the case that you get what you paid for.
