sorted bySo... Get android to developer mode (settings, device preferences, about, press on "build" repeatedly until it activates developer mode).
Next, go back to device preferences and scroll down to "developer options". Go into it and turn off "mobile data always active" (not relevant for TV of course as it doesn't use mobile data).
Next, keep going down to "background process limit". It's quite far down near the bottom. It should have "standard limit" selected. Change that to "at most, 4 processes".
Moments after doing that, any lag had significantly improved. Much much quicker now. (edited)

Thanks for highlighting this
I'll keep an eye on it. I thought I'd noticed it slowing down since I originally changed these settings, and this may explain why!
Like you say, it may have been due to an update. (edited)
Thanks
Getting to TV guide from live TV... About 2 seconds to get the TV guide screen to come up and then you see that spinning loading thing for a second or so. When booting TV it takes around 10 seconds to boot, probably even more and for probably another 15-20 seconds TV guide is unresponsive.
That's the TV guide screen. No picture in picture. Too many bells and whistles like a still picture of TV show, how long left, can access box sets and everything else from that screen which causes a bottleneck. When scrolling down the channel list it lags and freezes at times, isn't fluent scrolling up or down the list.
Almost everything does feel laggy, even putting volume up or down where often the volume will go up or down as instructed and a second or so later the on screen volume dial will pop up (it should be up right away).
Pressing ambilight on the remote should bring up ambilight right away but it takes 1-2 seconds to load.
Every time you change the channel by pressing a number, it comes up with "no programme title" for a second or so.
The issue is too much going on, not enough ram. I believe it's only got 2gb of ram.
- it arrived earlier than it should have (arrow XL) by around 30 mins.
- it's huge. Like extreme. I live in a big house but even so, it's huge. The box is mammoth.
- absolutely you will likely need some help. I managed to sort it myself while the wife is at work but it was extremely difficult. Had to lay it on TV stand, open at the bottom, put on feet and then turn. Even had to use a ladder to pull the box off when it was upright.
- stand feet aren't the best. One set of holes for one of them was off, not centred at all. Tv does wobble a bit.
- mains plug is short. It is a detachable figure of 8 style plug and it actually goes in the opposite side to where the TV aerial goes. Nightmare as my plug socket is the other side. Probably will have to get an extension lead. Budged up TV stand for now but it means ambilight isn't running optimally.
- TV uses around 4p an hour of electric.
- Remote feels very nice.
- Sound quality is decent.
- Polystyrene everywhere :(.
Very pleased. Also can disable apps from system settings. Feels ok so far without much lag. (edited)

You wil be fine with it protruding over. I went from 50 inch as well (which wasn't quite up to the edges of the TV stand) This is over slightly but fine. The feet are much closer that it seems on the picture. Each is approx half way between the centre and the end so correct with them being around 80cm apart.
Enjoy, it's a really decent TV. Even the sound is good, as mentioned (my previous TV has such bad sound quality you needed subtitles turned on to follow what was going on).
A shame with Android OS. I just assumed it would be good. I'd live with the slowness but you can't get britbox on it. So definitely a firestick for me too. (edited)
Glad I have fairly long arms, as it made lifting it onto the stand easier.
Really need to find some picture settings to use as a good starting point. I turned my PS4 on and found the image a little blurry when playing Rocket League. Changed the picture setting to game and it improved noticeably. I thought the TV would default to this when it detected the console, but apparently not.
Initial impressions are positive. Changed the developer settings to those mentioned above straight away. So far any lag is certainly less than the 4k Sony TV it's replacing.
The overall finish on the TV is acceptable for the price. It's not finished as well as the Sony in terms of construction, but it's in a different price league, so I wouldn't expect it to be. The stand seems solid and well built. I was pleasantly surprised about that minor detail.
Going to give it a good watching tonight, but if anyone has some picture settings they could share I'd really appreciate it.
Quick picture to end this rather lengthy post, apologies!
I played a few of the Dolby Vision/Atmos demos on YouTube whilst altering the settings and got it to how I like the pic. I’m sure there’ll be a bit more tinkering when playing back different content but boy the image is great and the ambilight with certain video content is just bonkers! It’s a whole new immersive experience for me and all I can say is that for the price, this has been an absolute billy bargain!
Just need to set it up with the Xbox Series X now but will leave that till tomorrow after clearing everything up which is exhausting! Will enjoy a nice film tonight when dark with a nice beer!

I'm having trouble with mine reverting back to "Standard" motion style every time it switches from SDR to Dolby Vision or vise versa.
I had seen some people report bugs with turning the volume up/down.
Are you able to confirm if this is the case?
I will be using a Firestick for everything and have a Skybox to watch the Free To Air channels. Don’t have a Sky sub but use it purely to watch a few free to air channels.
My TV stand is pretty low to the ground.
Thanks
My stand is pretty low to the ground as you can see. What I did was get it out of the box with it stood up. You open it from the top and slide the box up. Remove the polystyrene bits. I had a big soft foot stool which was around the same height of the TV stand to tip it down onto screen facing down. Can probably tip it onto a big coffee table with some pillows or towels on top as long as it’s relatively flat and there isn’t a bump that can put pressure on the screen.
Basically the screen is protected by a big piece of cardboard with some bits of protective cushioning blocks across the front so don’t remove that whilst getting it set up onto the TV stand.
Once it’s tipped over front face down, pop the feet on. It tells you it’s the 2 inner holes. Was really easy. Can’t go wrong as it only goes in one way with a notch and 3 screws each side. I then popped a towel on top of my TV stand, moved the foot stool close (feet first) right next to the TV stand and from the top end and hands/arms evenly placed under the front screen faced down tipped it forward and upright onto the TV stand. From there you can lift the TV up one side at a time to manoeuvre it to place properly and remove the rest of the protective packaging. (edited)

I've been seriously tempted to buy one, but reviews from purchasers on here alone are putting me off.

Thanks for the heads up OP. Took a while to persuade the missus about the size, and she still thinks it's ridiculous, but managed to get the green light

Yup, tried the options within the developer menu which has greatly improved lag compared to the default setting, but I still find the interface is still quite slow when jumping from option to option or when using the TV guide. Maybe I've just got so used to instant response when using the Fire Stick that it's no longer a fair comparison.
The bottom left hand corner of ours has this, but unsure if it's faulty or something that fairly common/acceptable.
It's quite blotchy all over on black scenes:

The C729K will be much better than the Samsung AU7000 or similar that normally pop up on here.
Their mid range C826K, which is a miniLED reviews incredibly well and even more so that it's under £1k where Philips' is miniLED's were £2k and above when I last checked!
With Costco, don't be put off by the membership. Sign up for month, buy the TV and cancel.
If you need the warranty after that then sign up for that month and cancel again (edited)
Must say that I do like this feature on the rear of the remote:
So, following my recent spate of bad luck with TV's, I ended up sending back the first 8 series set too. This was due to having a number of faulty pixels. They looked like grey pixels and marks underneath the top TV screen layer, with the exception of 1 pixel that was black and completely dead. Couldn't see them from the seating position, but nevertheless they were still there. Uniformity seemed ok to me, and black levels pretty decent.
Fast forward to today, and that one was exchanged and a new 8 series set was delivered. On initial inspection I can't see any obvious dead pixels. There's one that looks a little grey, but overall I think it's a noticeable improvement over the first set.
Uniformity on coloured screens seems fine. White screens are also ok too, but like the first 8 series set, each corner is slightly dim (see first photo). I believe that this is a fairly common occurrence, and given it cost me £513 for a series 8, with a 70" screen, I can forgive this.
Where this screen is notably worse than the first 8 series is on pure black screens, where there's a noticeable cloud effect (see photos 2, 3 & 4). As expected, this is worse in darker room conditions, and when the backlight is at a higher intensity. Whilst frustrating, I do accept that it's a fairly common occurrence, and generally not considered to be a fault as such. Probably just comes with the territory given the panel type, size and cost. Having the Ambilight on helps due to the room not being as dark.
I'm sick of sending large screens back for exchanges and refunds. I've sent 4 back in total: 2 x Philips 7 series to Richers Sounds, 1 x LG UQ80 to John Lewis, and 1 x 8 series to Richer Sounds. This was my last chance to get a non-faulty set from RS, after which my only option is a refund.
I think I'll keep this one and just accept that the minor issues mentioned above and shown in the photos below are common, particularly at this price point. Perhaps I'm also being too finicky.

I really wish I wasn't a perfectionist and that my eyes weren't drawn to minor imperfections, but you know what it's like. I guess I could also spend another £1k and still have imperfections in the screen!
I should have looked further into TCL sets as they do offer good value for money, but I can't see them being competitive against this 8 series at the £500 mark.
Stop the presses!
etc etc (edited)
Looks good and very happy. Like the ambilight.
The only annoying thing was motion handling defaulting back to on, but I’ve put the picture on game mode (which I like) and that has sorted it.
Great buy and it has exceeded my expectations.

Upscaling on standard content is a good effort actually and I was quite impressed. Menu speeds are a bit laggy even with the latest update and apps disabled, so you have to exit properly as well - that said, I could live with this.
The issue is with 4k & HDR. Can't say I was blown away by it and it seemed to lack detail all over the place. General picture also seems a bit washed out no matter what the setting. Compared to a friends' LG Nanocell, his HDR content was in a different league when viewing the same sources.
I know this is a budget panel but expected a bit better and ill be returning mine. Only my opinion though and of course one of many.

Only charged me £503 due to the issues and inconvenience I've experienced so far. Fingers crossed that this is 'The One'
Would love to see the uniformity photo when you're ready
As it's a higher tier model your chances should be better.
Perhaps it'd be good to get your feedback on the 8 series vs 7 series overall as well
Remember to add promo code "TV10" for an extra £10 off!
Couldn't say no at this price given the added 6 year guarantee! (edited)
Missus will be taking delivery tomorrow, wonder how long it will take for the obligatory 'send it back, its too big' quote!
Unlikely to get anything like this for this sort of price for a while. Prime day wont have anything of this size and quality for that price.
Ordered.
TV10 not working but if you sign up for VIP club they send you a code for £10 off.
Then sign up again on their site and get if for £489
