Does anyone know how much energy this uses costs wise?
    badger1010's avatar
What I've found using mine, which is not immediately obvious, is that the time it takes to cook food is shorter.
For instance, a piece of frozen fish that the packet says to cook for 20 mins (or more) will be sufficiently cooked in 12-13 minutes.
I check using a temperature probe to ensure that the food is properly cooked.
Frozen chips the same, a shorter time than the packet says to cook them for.
So not only is the device drawing less power than a conventional oven, it is being used for less time too resulting in a significant energy saving.

Great YouTube demoing the Air fryer, with good helpful tips from other users In the comments.

Wish I had a Costco near me. My electric oven broke yesterday. Don’t know if to get it fixed or invest in an airfryer.
    ifitsfreeitsmine's avatar
Do both, if the oven doesn't heat up then it's probably simply replacing the element, an aftermarket element can be had for about £10, replacing it is very easy (just make sure it's disconnected/off before hand).
I'm a convert, air fryers saves time and money and constantly gives better results than a regular oven. A standard oven is useful if you are cooking alot of food.

I ordered one online for the same price a few weeks ago and Parcel Force did their usual thing and utterly destroyed the box. I returned it to my local warehouse and bought another one. It was £39.99 + VAT i.e. £47.98 so a significant saving compared to purchasing online and I didn't have to wait days for it plus the box was immaculate!

I suggest it's worth checking a local Costco warehouse, it may be cheaper.
    Just.Wondering's avatar
True, but I guess the extra cost is for the built in delivery charge cost.

Could you open the unit halfway through a cooking cycle and add something like fires, if cooking say sausages, and cook them all together?
    Malcolm_Moore's avatar
Yes mate. Can open and close these as many times as you like

Don't forget relatively cheap fuel at Costco. My store is about 25 miles away so not ideal but we tend to arrange our infrequent trips there when we've got a nearly empty tank.
  8. Just.Wondering's avatar
Crazy question, buy 2 of these or buy one double draw ninja? Energy efficiency wise?
    NL19's avatar
I had the single Gourmia air fryer and switched for the double Sur La Table from Costco which I prefer as they trays are rectangular and very similar to the Ninja.

My wife has been on about getting an air fryer for ages. Lots of people say it’s quicker and cheaper to run than an oven. What I don’t understand about these is how you cook multiple things? So tonight for example part of our meal I cooked chicken breast and home made chips in the oven. If I wanted to do that in an air fryer do you cook one thing then take it out, clean it and cook the other? Or are there different levels inside to cook different food?
    ShaneC's avatar
They have a rack you can use, so you can cook 2 things at the same time.

Those of us without a Costco membership there is no need to panic. just ask around to see if friends or family have a card and get them to order it for you online. the added postage may push the price up a little bit but it's still worth it
    Goomba...'s avatar
Very true, but otherwise buy an online only annual membership for £15 (no job criteria). There's always loads of Costco deals posted on here to be had so good chance the small sign up cost will be worth it.

Just ordered one, absolute bargain! I'm going to do some bread baking experiments to see if I can get away from running the oven for over an hour for a loaf
    ibiza's avatar
Have you considered a bread maker?

Also you can cook far more than one loaf at once in and oven, & if you include one of the fizzy 1000mg vitamin C tablets in with the water before you start, the bread should last longer (& it doesn't flavour it). (edited)

Had one of these for a couple of years now, great air fryer but has a very irritating tray in the bottom of the pan that likes to try and tip out and burn you when you empty cooked food out of it. You have to resort to using utensils to remove the cooked items.

Doesn't detract from it being a great appliance though and far better value than the ridiculously overpriced Ninja branded ones.
    scrumpypaul's avatar
The tray is redesigned on newer models. Has little silicone grommets that keep it snug.
  13. Ilykthings's avatar
great size, can cook chips for 2 people and some chicken/fish at the same time. been cheaper previously but still a great price.
    Ilykthings's avatar
btw can't believe how hot this has got when it's been cheaper before, i know this is the price available now but shows the effect of these stupid energy prices making people look to alternatives
  14. andy.clare's avatar
can you fit an large/XL chicken in this - it doesn't very big ? Can you pack things in together or do items need space ?
    scrumpypaul's avatar
I've done a 1.9kg chicken. It would probably take a bigger one. I use the tray, cook upside down for twenty minutes then turn chicken over for a further 40, with a couple of bastes. Lovely.

Pack things too tightly and the hot air won't circulate very well.

Guys ive never owned an air fryer before...going to sound stupid but any tips?

Are these good for making "nice" chips from chipped potatoes? Or do they just come out like dry n burnt on the outside and hot and soggy in the middle?
    reckoning's avatar
Depends if you do it the right way, you're supposed to soak the cut chips in water for at least 30mins, dry properly with paper towels, and lightly oil. They are perfect in mine.

Been thinking of getting an air fryer to save on heating the oven up for 20 minutes just for chicken nuggets. This will save a packet this winter.

Finally get to use my Costco membership too.

I bought this about a month ago, and it's fantastic. Best thing is you can chuck frozen meat in, and it's still quicker than putting defrosted meat in the oven. I love it.
