whats the point in buying only 1,,, will this work in the uk, I want to buy them for the kids to have fun in summer but not sure if they will be any use or not.

Technically you need a licence to use these in the UK, to transmit on, they're not 'licence free PMR446' radios, so there's a chance using these will interfere with a legitimate radio user that has a licence. While you probably won't get caught, if you did, you could be fined....plus it's a real pain for that legitimate user...which could be anything from small business up to an airport.

For most of us, it's best to buy proper licence free walkie talkies from Argos etc. (edited)

Snagged it for £11.62 all-in. Should be interesting finding how to use it. Hey-ho as someone else said, it's only £11 or so

You can use it on the PMR frequencies, so basically a walkie talky without a licence.

If you carry a amatuer radio licence, you can use it on 2M and 1M. Use local repeaters and if the conditions are right, maybe even pick up French stations if you're near the coast.

If you're handy, you can build an antenna (or buy one) to pick up the ISS when they key up occasionally out the year.

With a phone app and a audio cable you can even use the data modes, So pickup SSTV, NOAA weather sats,

Lots of fun things you can do with a little handy like this. i've owned loads over the years

Get a bigger antenna - makes a massive difference on what you can pickup & transmission range.

Worth even if you just use it as an fm radio which it is capable of by pressing the orange button on the side of this transceiver. I use mine to talk on pmr446 which is now a lot more popular than CB radio. People will keep saying its not legal because these are upto 5 watt radio's, ofcom has not prosecuted a private individual in over 25 years and would not be interested in anyone using this radio for pmr.....

These are pretty much pointless and won't pick up anything with the small antenna.

Then a longer aerial can be bought to add on to it for £3

No, the numbers stations are on HF - 0-30MHZ you can hear them via Websdr - websdr.org/

Please be aware that these are NOT CB radios. You will need an Amature Radio licence to operate one of these legally. To get an Amature Radio licence you will need to pass an exam.

Can you pick up ATC chat on this ??
    spannerzone's avatar
    spannerzone
no ATC reception - although ATC uses VHF, it's lower frequencies VHF (118 to 136MHz) than this radio can select.... and they use AM modulation.

The house I live in used to be a business with a fleet of dump trucks and they had a cb radio antenna put on the roof which is still there, it will probably screw straight onto that antenna I'm guessing so I might buy this for giggles.

The UV-13 Pro has double the transmit power (10w) and is only a quid or so more for me. I wonder whether this is a better deal?

Really good radio surprisingly good quality , get good reviews on radio ham sites (for the price ) I have a couple programmed for PMR bands and used them to listen to Ham bands but don't transmit on HAM bands though . Your unlikely to get fined using on PMR , they are not to PMR spec but only you would know that , but they work loads better than legal PMR

I purchased one of these before and sold it on as I could never find anything being transmitted, for £11 I have ordered another, do I need a lead to program the unit and is it easy?

Lots of knowledge on this thread. Can someone please explain in one line what does PMR vs. CB vs. HAM vs. Any other gets you and which is most popular at the moment in the UK and whether this radio can do both or one.
    energy80s's avatar
    energy80s
PMR is Public Mobile Radio and is primarily used for businesses (in particular taxis). CB seems to be for the kids to swear on these days. HAM radio is for licenced radio amateurs / experimenters who have sat an exam and gotten a licence from Ofcom which allows them to transmit on certain frequency bands with powers of up to 400 watts. This unit would be mainly of interest for the 2 metre and 70cms ham bands and "licence free" 446MHz use (even though the power is a bit much for those channels). I have a slightly better model and it works fine for all of that. Can even pick up the ISS (on 145.800MHz) using a simple whip aerial when its overhead.

Regularly work Germany on 433 Mhz.

We are looking for a radio to communicate between 2 cars ( we are going for the lake District in each of our cars). Would 2 of these work?

Also, do they have a push button mic attachment to press when your driving?

They would if on the same Channel, but Ham radio frequencies need you to have a ham radio licence

Batteries on these die pretty quickly. I use one (for receiving only) and less than a year and holds no charge. Upgrading to a 3800mh battery.
    E_T_C's avatar
    E_T_C
The batteries despite labels are usually the same capacity, can I ask do you keep the unit in the charger as this can cause memory effects on the battery.

I have found the batteries I have seems to work better if they are allowed to run down and then charged back up.

Does it pick up aircraft like a radio scanner
    the-bunker's avatar
    the-bunker
No - they are further up (or down) the frequency for aircraft comms. I did have an aircraft FM receiver many years ago & all I could ever pick up was the aircraft comms - not the tower, or other control broadcasting. So I only ever got 1 side of the conversation - and they were suprisingly brief...

I have the extended antenna for this and have picked up many a random chat from Bouncers discussing the the best way to smuggle substances, to a lonely fisherman who had a fetish for large ladies in fish nets....

I did pre-programme mine using some software to pick up extended bands using the official USB adaptor and blackmarket software ;-)
