My favourite horror movie, under appreciated on release, now rightly acclaimed as a horror classic

John Carpenter delivers the ultimate in alien terror in this chilling story about an Antarctic research team that discovers a form-changing alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years.

In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.

Yep love this! Kurt Russells best film i reckon. I wonder how they done some of those creature effects even today! Superb they were, especially considering it's a 40 year old film. (edited)

I still remember watching The Thing for the first time. Nothing prepares you for the scene with the dogs! All done without CGI.

I found the creature with the fat guys head on it especially creepy! (edited)

This film has what a lot of modern films lack, atmospheric scenes and great characters, the prequel could have been better but it was good enough

A horror classic without question, no females, no love scenes but there are characters called Mac and Windows.

If you want to see one of the best films without the use of CGI for special FX then this is a must watch.

    IMO

It's been out in 4k for some time see link below, I'm not sure if you can get it cheaper but worth checking.
I had the pleasure of watching the 4k release in the cinema last year, definitely more awesome on the big screen

But Benny Hill's performance is outstanding. Criminally overlooked at that year's Oscars.
