I wonder what the Ulefone design team were smoking, when they came up with the idea of adding a walkie talkie to a mobile phone?

Thats because in many third world countries they use push to talk and also walkie talkie's far more than mobile sim networks

Ahh perfect for post apocalyptic future proofing, regular phone for now and a walkie talkie for when the world ends.

Joking aside, I imagine this is useful for people who routinely work outside cell tower range.

Even for people within range PTT doesn't need people to pick up the phone. You can just announce your message. Great for teams of people working together. PTT over cellular also has unlimited range.

A decent option for those who spend countless hours out in the sticks. There's a lot of places in the Peak District where there's no cell network. This could be useful for hike leaders or even just a couple of mates who do more than just walk the muddy path.

Except it only has 400-480MHz frequency range for the "walkie-talkie" bit - even in the best case it'd be limited to line of sight or thereabouts. You could use 430-440 MHz if you are a licensed amateur radio operator. PMR 446 would be illegal on this as it has a removeable antenna and no doubt is over the allowable 0.5W. You might as well buy a cheap Baofeng UV-5R transceiver and get your amateur foundation license or a business (Simple UK) license £75 for 5 years as your backup. But for the vast majority of people in the UK this would be illegal to use. Hike leaders should have a decent radio anyway if conditions are tough and no mobile signal and be licensed.

Sorry to be so dense about it but the person you are trying to communicate with have to have the same make walkie talkie phone?

Great if you're out and about in the great outdoors and an emergency happens and your mobile can't be used for various reasons.
Whilst treking in mountains etc I carry a separate handheld radio just in case.
However if this single device conks out your stuffed... I think I'll keep them separate. 😁 (edited)

Please forgive my ignorance but isn’t this like having a multi function printer with a dot matrix printer built in? Not actually being sarcastic for once

When civilisation collapses, the power goes out, the networks collapse and the zombies are looking to eat your brains - this will let you call other walkie talkie users over local distances and go "aaaaaarrrrgh!" into the mic with much greater clarity.

Also useful if you and your mate are on the Three network and you're in some far away remote location like... say... inside a building in a Wolverhampton hospital.

Come on guys. It's a phone. but it's also a walkie talkie...so you can choose. Also, if the battery runs out on the phone, you can use the walkie talkie to....oh....ok...you can't.

target audience is outdoorsy, trekking and whatnot.
is rugged, triple batt than many phones, walkie talkie because there's no cell tower on mountains forests hills and whatnot.
why is people making fun of this in here, it literally covers the needs of people who actually don't spend too much time in the city without having to buy multiple devices

I think because it is impractical and expensive - not legal in the UK unless you have an amateur radio license or business license, definitely not legal on license free PMR466 due to the removable antenna - the chance of anyone usefully listening in an emergency on a random frequency it is capable of is practically zero if you have no prior training. If you have a license you'd likely already have a better (and much cheaper!) radio that works on VHF as well - this is just on UHF with probably a useless antenna that'd need replacing anyway for something better.

The new generation of the Xiaomi branded walkie talkie fully supports Netcom 4G networks, obviously we refer to those of the Asian country. In particular, it relies on the 4G networks of the three major Chinese operators, so as to be able to reach an intercom distance of 5000 kilometers throughout the country and thus breaking through the traditional distance limit of intercom calls.

If I was that out and about I'd have a seperate walkie-talkie handset - I've worked in places with no or very patchy cell signal so we used both - also if one failed you had a second.

Would have been fun for kids years ago - but now kids no longer talk on phone and minutes are zero (ish) cost or other options. 15 years ago might have worked but.... maybe more use in China or similar - who knows?

Farmers in remote places for those questioning why. I wonder if you can get calls forwarded to the walkie talkie function?

£40k of GPS & more of other tech in fairly average modern agricultural vehicle. Am sure farmers can afford a set of state-of-art £50 walkie talkies with a stack of batteries to augment if need be.

Could you use this in walkie talkie mode whilst driving in the UK and be totally legal I wonder?
    daevid's avatar

Not unless you got a license, it cant be used for license-free radio (PMR446) as it has a removable antenna and would be illegal. There are better options for radios than this for a **lot** less money.
