Experience Super-Fast Wireless Speeds
Powered by 5th generation Wi-Fi (5G Wi-Fi) and 256QAM technology, the 802.11ac chipset gives the RT-AC85P faster wireless speeds than N technology. At 2.4 GHz, it reaches 600 Mbps, while on the 5GHz band it blazes to 1733 Mbps. The upgraded bandwidth has the higher capacity you need to increase Wi-Fi enjoyment at home. You can enjoy ultra-smooth online gaming, snappier web surfing and other bandwidth-demanding tasks without a wired connection.

ASUS QoS
ASUS QoS ensure inbound and outbound bandwidth on both wired and wireless connections, you could control each client devices with different download and upload max speed, also could define your online gaming and HD streaming as highest priority, stop all your lagging issues.

Multiple Capacity Wi-Fi with Revolutionary MU-MIMO Technology
MU-MIMO gives every compatible device3 its own dedicated full-speed Wi-Fi connection, so that multiple devices can connect at the same time without slowing down the network. In fact, RT-AC85P is able to connect to multiple MU-MIMO-compatible clients at each device's maximum speed simultaneously, unlike standard single-user MIMO where individual devices have to wait for sequential transmissions.

Parental Controls
Keep your kids safe when they explore the internet. You can monitor the internet activities and restrict the times that each device can access the internet by applying scheduled time limits.

Ultimate USB speed and versatility
USB 3.1 (Gen1) features data transfers up ten times faster than USB 2.0. RT-AC85P is perfect for file, multimedia, and 3G/4G sharing, while ASUS AiDisk offers remote access and quick content streaming.

Robust control and optimization with ASUSWRT
With the ASUSWRT dashboard UI, setup, monitor, and control network applications all in one intuitive area. With 30-second setup, multi-device detection, and flexible settings, ASUSWRT makes the most of your network performance.

I’ve made research, but didn’t find answer.
Would it connect to NordVPN or ExpressVPN via OpenVPN protocol?

    Yes.

It looks like this has OpenVPN. I have a ASUS RT-AC86u which has OpenVPN and am currently running NORD VPN as my VPN client. Used to have Express VPN on it as well.

You just need to download your desired server set up file from your VPN provider and then install.

Once up and running, it can be a bit of a pain using selective routing (decding to have some devices use the VPN tunnel while others use the standard WAN) and implementing the Kill switch, and making devices use the VPN tunnel by default unless you say different, with the stock software.

There is old Merlin firmware for this router, though they are no longer updating it. If the last version had Merlins VPN director upgrade that makes selective routing a bit easier. (edited)

Works well tethering a phone to this via USB 3.1, so sharing mobile broadband via the router. (edited)

Can I use this router for AiMesh with my router RT-AX86U???
    The_Bounty_Bear's avatar

    No.

    asus.com/net…ems

But check if it can act as a wireless bridge if all you wanted to do was plug some devices into this routers ethernet LAN ports in other parts of your house and have them on your RT-AX 86U LAN.

Before I buy this, I have a virgin hub 3 and I've also got ethernet sockets built in to my walls. Can I connect my virgin hub (the WAN port) to to wall via ethernet, then connect this Asus router via the receiving ethernet port upstairs and essentially extend my wifi?
    smashers's avatar
    smashers
    Yes most likely,
But you need to decide what you actually want first.
1 Virgin media is modem mode, IE no WiFi and Asus becomes main router with the WiFi.
    2. Virgin media is main router with Asus set up as access point mode.
    3. Use both as routers with separate networks (unlikely).
My set up is 1, but I also have old BT routers set up as access points.
All the connections are between routers/AP are with ethernet.
In your case each socket will most likely have a cable running from it with a plug on the other end. All the cables will run to a central location. (Where you would put the Asus).
Ethernet is point to point rather than a ring so you can't just plug each router into a socket and expect them to talk.

That set you may be able to connect two plugs together to get what you want. (edited)

How good is this vs virgin supplied hub? I struggle with my WiFi dropping out or signal,?

The general consensus is that the virgin router is rubbish. Although my installation block said it was all sorted and now just hearsay.

That said I have an Asus router anyway, and it's brilliant. So for £43 off ebuyer it's well worth a try.
Just stick the virgin router in modem mode.

Yes it's not WiFi 6, but you currently pay a premium for this, and I doubt many of your devices actually support it. And even if they did I can't imagine you are likely to actually notice any difference. Unless you gaming.

So for me WiFi 6 is still one for the future teacher than the now. (edited)

Can you connect external hard drive for backing up wirelessly?

Personally buying an Asus router was a real step up in terms of stable connectivity and useful features a premium router can provide.

Asus routers come in built security and threat protection and parental controls which are really useful.

Yes on rare occasions I have to reboot it, but I generally have rock solid connectivity with loads of devices connected at once.

Would that work as replacement for BT Smart Hub 2 - Fibre?
If so, how does it work, do I just slap the cables in from the current router and set up new router as normal?
    DarrylJohn's avatar
    DarrylJohn
Assuming your BT is a separate modem and router, should be good to do just that. If it's just one device, it's more complicated as you'd need a Router with a Modem built into it.

To an absolute noob, how much better are these compared to the routers provided by the Internet providers (virgin, sky etc) ?
    let me know.
    jonbee56's avatar
    jonbee56
The ones supplied by virgin/bt/sky are really REALLY basic cheap units. Yes, they do the job........just about.... but dropouts, signal strength, and the need for a weekly reboot make it utterly abysmal. Think along the lines of a Tesco smart price tin of beans against Heinz. Yes they're both beans, but ...... I changed my virgin router to an Asus last year...its a really beneficial (and cheap) upgrade
