81p a month for a VPS.. I don't even need one but at this price I think it's rude not too.

For anyone here with AWS knowledge, (one) t4g.small is free until Dec 2023. I'm running one at $0.02 (for storage) per day. FYI, t4gs are ARM not x86

Do they publish their POPs anywhere? I need to run a VPN server in India (edited)

Never mind... found the locations while trying to create one. Only locations in AP are Singapore and Australia.

Anyway, good deal for what it's worth

    A few free options:
    - AWS has a 1 year free tier that allows to run a small instance - aws.amazon.com/free/
    - MS Azure is similar to AWS (1 year free) azure.microsoft.com/en-…es/
    - GCP: similar as AWS, but it remains free after 1 year - cloud.google.com/free
    - Oracle Cloud: By far the best free offering at the moment (with no expiry) - oracle.com/clo…ee/
-- 2 AMD compute instances (1vcpu and 1GB ram each) and up to 4 arm vcpus and 24gb of RAM, 10TB of outbound data

The drawback of Oracle Cloud is that if they terminate accounts with running instances which are idle most of the time (so it's important to have a good backup strategy!) (edited)

Does oracle have a VPS compute like this thread offers? I would like to create my free openvpn, I did it awhile back using OVH which wasn't too bad for a VPN that I could control. 👌

Incredible deal OP. That’s a good spec at a low price. I bought 2. There’s a max of 10 per customer. Not a great choice of images but that’s ok.

You can install a lot of other distributions btw, if you boot it to recovery mode and use Qemu. I used to run VyOS on these to tail back a load of cheap public IP's to my home server running in my house. (edited)

How do you rate OHV services and offers in general?

Asking for a non-techno floppy-disk user, interested in the stockmarket.

OVH are very reliable and competitively priced. Only bad thing I can think of is that they had a data centre burn down a few years back.

I got one few weeks back and mainly use it as a wireguard VPN server to stream HBO Max. It works quite well - miles better than any cheap lowendbox provider.

Just signed up for 10 of these, which is around £10/month

I use them for isolated pre-production environments for developing/testing web apps - much better value than DigitalOcean Droplets - or even App Platform, for the same purpose

I only need to cancel 2 droplets to make this worthwhile - and I get 10 more powerful environments as a result

    What’s not to like here?

Plex server? Connect it to onedrive using rclone and it will work fine with an amazon firestick/google chrome tv. It will struggle to transcode, but you shouldn't need transcoding with the firestick/google

Doesn't say about a data limit ? And most server providers block plex....

But yeah I don't need one either but I'll try it. (edited)

I've just set plex up on mine and it works fine. Just have to forward port 32400 in iptables.

Very low usage requirements, only static page and about 20-30 emails a year.

Could you use skystream pucks multi room in different locations with this if you connected both pucks to the VPS? Somehow.

So, as a newbie to this kind of thing... How would I be best to set this up? Can it be changed later, does it really matter?

It's not something I've played with before but the kind of thing I like to learn about.

    TIA

What is it you’re trying to achieve? Difficult to suggest anything without knowing that first. But if it helps, you would set this up and choose an image (e.g Debian). You would then access it via SSH (use Putty or command prompt / terminal).

Interesting. I've got a VPS on Cloudways (Vultr) hosting a wordpress site, could these replace this for me? It costs a lot more but is a managed platform, I'm not especially techie.
    OliverDickins's avatar
    OliverDickins
I used Vultr personally because they looked after their IP space from mail spam. So you can email their support to have them open up TCP/25 outbound for you.

However, OVH, not such luck. All ports are open outbound by default and they do nothing to protect people from abusing their IP space, so they always appear on blacklists by ASN number - so the whole space is usually blocked by spam filters.

With that in mind, I've always found OVH to be reliable (albeit that fire they had which did affect my stuff), so as long as you don't want to send emails from the thing - you'll be good.

That's cracking value, one of the best deals I've seen from a reputable company. My friend was with OVH before and mentioned they asked for ID when setting up an account, is that still a thing?

I've tempted to give them a try, I've been with DO and Linode for a while - but this offer is a lot more competitive.

Didn’t ask me for ID. I know some providers ask for ID if the customer orders a lot of dedicated servers with a high value in case you don’t pay.
