Christmas Vacancies / Jobs 2023

Update 1
Several retailers have announced just how many members of staff they're looking to recruit. Check out the latest update in the description for more info!
As we're still not in a great position when it comes to cost of living, we thought having a list of job openings would be useful again this year. Many will be seasonal / temp positions, but some places may also be taking on longer term.

It's certainly a good time to be looking if you want to earn some extra cash, especially around Christmas time. Students looking for work after starting univesity could find it useful too, so do pass on the link, if you thing someone could find it useful.

I've added the list of job pages below, for loads of different places, which are all worth checking back on, even if there's nothing there that suits you right now. As well as this, you could even HEAD HERE to see other Christmas jobs, including some for Father Christmas and his elves

Update - 16th October 2023

The retailers below have now announced just how many job roles are up for grabs! In some cases there are way over ten thousand If any of the below grab your interest, it might be worth applying ASAP!
Good luck!

  • M&S - kicks off Christmas recruitment drive with 10,000 roles available
  • Sainsbury’s - ‘Tis the time for seasonal recruitment: 22,000 jobs now available
  • Tesco - jobs: 30,000 temporary Christmas vacancies available
  • Morrisons - is searching for 3,600 Christmas staff
  • Iceland - is recruiting for over 1,500 part-time Retail Assistant and Home Delivery Driver positions.
  • Smyths - Toys is taking on 1,000 sales assistants at stores across the country.
  • The Entertainer - needs 800 Seasonal Sales Assistants
  • Royal Mail - is looking for 16,000 temporary staff

A little bit of news:
Sadly there have been multiple cases of retailers shutting up shop, leaving employees stranded for work.

At this point, I think everyone has heard that Wilko are axing thousands of jobs, after entering administration last month. The amount of people facing the unknown right now is staggering, but there is a saving grace that could help ex-Wilko employees.

Tesco have been urging those affected to apply for one of 3,500 job vacancies across the UK.

"We currently have 3,500 vacancies in Tesco stores across the UK and we are encouraging Wilko staff to take a look at the roles available in their area and get in touch with our team or apply online.”

If you want to do that, then you can check out Tesco HERE

Tesco aren't the only retailer to be making this gesture! Aldi, Dunelm, The Works, Home Bargains and Hobbycraft are offering guaranteed interviews too!

We wish you all the best of luck with you applications! You're awesome

My 16 year old son has been applying for since July and no one is replying back!

I know it's probably not what they want, but McDonald's are always taking on. I worked there for my first job and hated it, BUT made a lot of very good friends, some of whom I'm still pals with now in my 40's.
It's going out money, which is all you want at that age.

Plus, it's good to get something on your CV, even if you only work there a few months. (edited)

Loads of restaurant work around this time of year
I did it for years and made a fortune, mostly in tips and had such a laugh
Try independent one's though and not big chains
Sometimes you'll be kept on after Xmas too

Tbh there are jobs all over where I live, it's just that no one wants minimum wage or close to minimum wage jobs or the hours don't suit them, or they want weekends off etc.
    ninjatiger's avatar
Ever thought though with cost of things maybe min wage isn’t enough for them to live off. I work but at min wage I can barely afford mortgage, energy bills food etc. yes I agree there are those people but not all are thinking like that.

The UK is in a good position at the moment. We have around 1million unfilled vacancies. A lot are seasonal, casual and part time. Idea for Christmas and some extra money. I start a 3 month one next week.

Not good for the country, tens of millions of hours of productivity lost, less taxes paid, more welfare payments.

Need to make it the famed high skill, high wage economy we were promised rather than loads of minimum wage jobs no-one can afford to live on.

Dont recommend yodel at all for self employed local courier work.
    braddrum's avatar
The good news about working for Yodel is you don’t have to deliver anything.

Supermarket work is a pretty dismal experience around Xmas. Especially shall I say in the more budget ones.
    N3M3S15's avatar
Working in supermarkets is made worse by hideous, self-centred customers. I worked for sainsburys for 8 years, the week before Christmas was plain savage...

Menkind appear to be hiring for Christmas positions at the moment. They certainly are near me in the Aylesbury store and have seen ads in-store elsewhere.

Not on the website yet but they do have a lot of FT jobs currently available also

Looks like most jobs are low paying. Would be great to know the average pay 15 years ago.

The average pay for temp Christmas jobs 15 years ago? Not a lot

Got 2 part time jobs as an Evri driver and as Santa last year. 50% of kids got damaged presents, some had to retrieve them from the grotto five doors down and the rest got an email saying 'sorry we missed you' when I was in the pub.

Zero hours contract for national minimum or living wage? And government is surprised, why people stays on welfare benefits....
    smokeycat's avatar
Over 22 million people on benefits of some kind, and over 40% of them are employed. Perhaps wages should be increased so people can live on them.

Retail is not a good place to be now. People are vile.

They’ve been vile, it’s nothing new.

Any virtual roles? I work full time already, so something for evenings/weekends would be great

That's assuming you can get a job after being vetted by the AI tests/interviews most companies put you through nowadays before a human interview....and that's just to stack shelves (edited)
    jimbo23's avatar
They have been doing that for years. AI searches CV's for keywords and if not found, auto-delete.

Best putting a ton of invisible words at the bottom of your CV like meta tags in HTML code.

Many years ago I signed up with two agencies who had contracts at Royal Mail in my old home town on the run up to Christmas. It was so badly organised at the agencies that you could sign in on both agencies work sheets at the same time, so double the whack for one shift. Was a great Christmas, and even though I earn a hell of lot more money now I always look back fondly on what the double bubble afforded.
    harrythefish's avatar
So that's where the Horizon money went.

Does that make you immune to Christmas?

It's the police and A&E that need extra staff, due to the drunken carnage caused every Xmas.

But we are in September, no where near that awful time of the year.
    jimbo23's avatar
Some places start getting Christmas stuff in July. September has always been the time when places start advertising for Xmas staff. (edited)
