Scooter helmet recommendation.

The lad has got himself some 50cc wheels for Xmas and it's time to look for something to keep his grey matter intact should the worst happen. Any bikers out there that could steer me in the right direction is much appreciated.

I tend to use ghostbikes for my helmet needs, they do next day delivery and tend to be the cheqpest on helmets.

Look the helmet up for its sharp rating too (dont fall for the idea that the more you spend the better the helmet) sharp.dft.gov.uk/

I'd avoid an internet purchase for a first crash helmet or at least take him to a bike shop so you know the correct size and fit and then find the same make/model/size on the web cheaper.
Also some brands fit some shaped heads better than other.

Good leather motorbike gloves are as essential as a crash helmet.

Also some Kevlar lined motorcycle jeans are a useful purchase.

    100% this.

I'd also add that a a proper jacket with armour on the elbows, back and shoulders is a reasonably low price good investment.

But a full face helmet (I've seen close up injuries following a crash with an open face helmet) with the BSI standards sticker on from a dealer so it fits properly is a very good idea.

Thanks all for the useful info! Should I be looking at fixed full face rather than one of those helmets where the front section pulls up? Want to get the purchase right for obvious reasons.

Protective jacket is a great idea, something I overlooked, also leather rather than synthetic gloves is definitely the way to go! I was half expective to pay £300 for the helmet but if cost doesn't always mean better I'll think on... Cheers all.

Go fixed full face, the flip up ones are heavier, more noisy, and not as protective.
HJC are good lids for price per quality, should easily get something decent for £100 or less.
But try on before you buy is a must to get right fit.

The most important thing is to get the right fit.
My head doesn't fit the two top brands very well, Arai is really uncomfortable and Shoei presses on my forehead. In the end I tried a ton of helmets on and found a Nolan that was a very good fit.

You also do not want a loose fit as a helmet that moves around too much will cause more damage if you do come off.
If you get the right fit it will be the safest for his bonce, as well as being comfortable.

P.S do not buy a helmet that costs less than £100, they may pass the safety tests but they wont be that good.

Lots of good advice here. Don't stint on cost, or proper fit with the helmet. Next protect knees and hands. A good helmet saved my life. At todays prices it would cost about £250.

Been looking at the AIROH Valor, seems to rate well with Sharp. There's also the AGV PISTA GP R and a handful of other Bell branded helmets I need to look at before committing. Cheers all...
