Woolworths could be coming back to the high street

No, this isn't a malfunction, and you haven't suddenly time-traveled back to 1996 when strolling into 'Woolies' meant enjoying a delightful pick 'n' mix, which was about 60p a cup, and tuning in to the latest chart hits, of the ''Macarena'' or ''Gangsta's Paradise'' on a headset, where only one ear worked, whilst your parent(s) browsed for another Pyrex dish.

Roman Heini is spearheading the expansion of Woolworth Germany across Europe and expresses a desire to add new stores in the UK to his "bucket list." Once renowned for its pick 'n' mix sweet counters, these stores disappeared from our town centers when the British company went into administration in 2009, marking the end of a century-long legacy.

Mr. Heini remarked, "I can't think of any brands with as much recognition in Britain without having active stores. We have secured all the trademarks for the brand throughout Europe, giving us the option to operate if we decide to do so. It might be on the horizon for the mid or long-term future."

Woolworth Germany faced insolvency in 2009 but successfully staged a comeback, expanding into Austria and Poland. With over 600 stores, the company abstains from online sales and focuses on own-brand household items and clothing, including underwear.

On a related note, Woolworths did attempt a 'comeback' under the Shop Direct Brand, operating exclusively online. However, it failed to gain significant traction and eventually wound down, in 2015.

Here's some Memories of Woolworths:

Trading on past reputation. Same thing happened to loads of clothing and electronics brands.

Woolworths is just a memory of a far nicer time.

    Little known fact...

Back in the 70's, Woolworths sold a car in their stores, the "Bond Bug"...

52057400-WWUD9.jpgIt was sold in kit form and as it didn't have a reverse gear it could be driven with just a motorcycle licence.

    Another "geeky" fact...

The "Bond Bug" was used for the chassis of Luke's Landspeeder in Star Wars (the wheels were removed in post production)...

Are you sure they removed the wheels? IIRC they used a skirt of mirrors and only in the special edition did they digitally enhance the scene.

Pick and mix used to be my favourite, back in the day! But seeing new generations folks and kids grabbing dirty hands in all the sweets, taking nibbles and putting them back, or sneezing and coughing over the whole thing... yeah, puts me right off. (edited)

Like the British Empire Woolworths should remain in the dustbin of history

Easy Target, the British. All negativity is welcome.

I regularly travel to Germany and they have a Woolworths in Frankfurt. Has the Pick A Mix as you’d expect but it’s nothing like the Woolworths of old 😩

Basically is just full of random stuff which is cheap and rubbish. Looks like one of those Discount Home Stores with lots of random home stuff and other bits.

Hopefully comes back as we remember! Remember back in the day going there at the start of a school year to pick out a new pencil case and random bits of stationary

I would welcome this as a former Woolies employee on the entertainment section, was one of my best jobs and brings back memories of good and simpler times

I can't see it working. For the same reasons it initially went bust and for what has only just happened to its modern day replacement, Wilko.

(Embarrassed to say I had an interview with Woolworths back in the day and didn't get the job).

Yip blame on it on the volume of people who deserted the high street in favour of Amazon

European high streets open till 9/10pm in big cities and buzzing. British high streets dead by 4pm and it’s the populations own fault it’s like this

id only give Amazon my cash if I had no other option

A typical shop, scoop up some pick n mix, go check out the top 10 singles chart, purchase Stardust, Music sounds better with you then go to instore photo booth with the other half to mess about and wait 10 minutes for photos to develop.

Dont know why people are complaining and saying it will end the same, good on someone for trying. Better than a dozen vape shops and gambling outlets surely. Also dont forget to actually go and spend money in your town before complaining its dying.

All those sweets in the first picture would be stolen nowadays, there would be nothing left unfortunately.

I miss the big Co-Op department stores and also Littlewoods. The High Street is dead due to high parking charges ,ridiculous bus lanes and other restrictions.

Generally true for many UK towns. It might need some sort of evolution and consideration to being based in shopping centres and retail parks. Bargain BM and the like can afford the high rentals, so there must be a business model that could work there.

The 7 P's of marketing principles and concepts would need applied wisely. I don't think it will happen to be honest. I liked Woolies but would prefer to see BHS back. Was like a cheaper M&S.

I remember buying CD's from Woolies. For some reason, probably down to theft, Woolworths would take every CD out of their case and put them in a cardboard slipcase behind the counter. You'd take the CD you wanted to them and they'd take the disc out the slipcase and more often than not place it down on the counter while they opened the case. After sliding it across the counter to pick it up, you'd end up with Boyzone's Greatest Hits complete with dust ,dirt and scratches. Cheers Denise on the Entertainments desk

Oh man. I remember going in Woolies with my nan when I was about 8. She got me some pick n mix and South Park The Movie on VHS
Clearly not realising what it actually was. I chowed down on some jellybeans and watched the whole thing!

Last thing I bought out of woollies was a DAB radio. Paid for it online, collected it and then got an email to say it was out of stock and got my money back. No wonder they went bust.

Used to love browsing the 12 inches that had dipped out the top 40 and on sale...with my music taste this meant many a bargain

I do hope this comes to fruition, I've fantastic memories of nipping in to Woolies when on my dinner break from my Saturday job as a lad, picking up an album or two, a couple of quarters from the pick and mix counter and of course, they were there if ever I needed a gift or two at Christmas

I did the Sunday night 7pm charts radio Bruno Brookes countdown thing on my tape cassette recorder. Record+Play, then lots of pause/unpause activity. It meant more money for Woolies pic n mix or strawberry and cola laces.

If it came back today it would just be like walking into The Range or B&M but with different branding. I think the affection people hold for old shops like this is really just nostalgia for what were simpler and better times.

    I have an amazing idea
If it does make a comeback go in and buy stuff to keep it open. (edited)
  25. Cjlhessing's avatar
This Woolworths has absolutely nothing to do with and nothing in common with the one from our childhoods and it’s a ‘bucket list’ idea so nothing more than a pipe dream that will probably never happen.

I don't mean to boast, but just the other day I noticed that my trusty Office Tower is a Woolworths product!

What I find odd there is mothers day in 1985 being in May - is that actually a UK photo? - Mothering Sunday in UK is " always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent (Laetare Sunday), 3 weeks before Easter Sunday....
In the US, mothers day is in May - but in 1985 is was the 12th...

That was exactly my question too. I'm not convinced it is, unless they've changed when the date of it used to be.

If Woolworths abstain from online sales they get my wholehearted support. Let’s hope others follow ! (edited)

I think they always had the online shop even after going bust, they might have licensed the name out though.

Would be even more of a struggle with B&M and Poundlands everywhere.

The name may return but the business model won’t. There’s a reason it shut to start with - not enough people didn’t spend enough money. The model is broken, Debenhams, BHS, Littlewoods all could feature on where are they now, other than John Lewis and one or two local department stores that style of shopping is long gone.
