blankdisco123 - depends what you're looking for in a camera as to whether you'd choose this or the panasonic g3. The G3 is a micro four thirds camera, while the Canon 1100d is an entry level DSLR. The sensor will be slightly larger on the DSLR, allowing you to create shallower depths of field and better blur the background from your subject....but the camera will be significantly larger, heavier and more of a burden to carry around.

If you are looking for something that you want to be able to carry everywhere, without hassle - that will take great photos - the G3 is probably the camera for you. If you are looking to get into photography and want to be able to choose from a wide variety of lenses, the Canon DSLR is probably the best bet.

I've used both types of camera... I love my Canon 60D to pieces, but find myself taking the micro-four thirds out 9 times out of 10, as it fits easy in my bag, isn't an effort to carry, costs less if it gets stolen... and takes photos that are 90% as good as the DSLR. In most situations, you'd be struggling to see the difference.

IS really isn't needed in this focal range so I wouldn't worry about this kit lens not having it

IS is handy at any focal length provided the issue is camera motion rather than subject motion and moreso for a beginner who is the target demographic for the 1100D (amateurs/hobbyists should and probably would go for the 550D/600D, or maybe the 650D). If you want to take a landscape photograph in low-light conditions without a tripod (e.g. a night-time cityscape) then IS can prove to be the difference between a blurry and decent photograph, especially on a lens like the 18-55mm which doesn't have a particularly large maximum aperture.

Next best 'UK' price is from Dixons at £295: Clicky

    ***EDIT***

No idea why, but my post was missing a lot.

I'd given the Dixons link and mentioned that it didn't come with lens as a good thing. I'd also given a link to Camera Paradise, and an explanation.

Can't be arsed to write it all out again

How does this compare with the Panasonic g3? Worth spending a little extra and going for that?
  9. deleted54688's avatar
REALLY worth getting a image stabilising lens. Still a good price though, I paid £300 for a refurb body only last year.

Why would you provide a 'clicky' when this deal is cheaper -AND- your deal doesn't include a lens!

...also depends if a viewfinder is important for you. The Canon DSLR has a proper viewfinder, while the G3 uses an electronic viewfinder.. and they're sometimes a bit awkward. I've not used the G3 though, so can't compare on that particular one.

Just bought this camera which arrived this afternoon. I was advised to make sure the lens is IS II though & eventually bought from ebay here ebay.co.uk/itm…a36 for all in price of £294.98. Camera looks fine but probably a US import as it has 2 battery chargers in the box - one having a 110v US plug.

The Nikon D3000 is also down to £269.99 but is only a 10mp CCD sensor and hence not that good at iso 800 and above. Also there is no live view but it does have the VR lens.

Do you still get the Argos vouchers with the £50/£100 spend or has that finished now?
  16. jon67's avatar
Looks like the Argos vouchers offer has ended. There's nothing on the home page anymore promoting the offer.

Thanks for the detailed response SophieOttaway, I think the g3 may be the better option for me. I've only ever used compact cameras so would like something easy to carry around.
