I have 3 around my house. Things I use it for in order of usefulness:

    1. Clock / Alarm clock (hey google set alarm for 7am)
    2. Timers for cooking etc (hey google set timer for 20 mins)
    3. Turning lights on, controlled by Kasa smart plugs (Hey google turn on living room lamps)
    4. Set heating controlled by Tado smart thermostat (Hey google set temperature to 21 degrees)
    5. Check commute (Hey google check journey to work)
    6. Youtube Music (I have a cheap Youtube Prem account via India) Shows videos, but I'd be lying if I said I often watch the videos. Youtube Music does have pretty much any song or band I ask for so no need for Spotify etc.
    7. Showing CCTV (Hey google, show front door camera).
    8. Weather (hey google what's the weather tomorrow)
    9. General questions (Hey google, what's the meaning of life)
    10. Not really a feature, but it's gernal customisation. As standard, it's surprisingly locked down for a google device, but it can be opened up with resources such as Home Assistant - this is definitely at the geek end of the scale and not straightforward, but far more open than Amazon Alexa.

It has a few strange issues such as the inability to easily set it up to show the day/date on home screen, but generally I'm very happy with them. It won't change your world, but just makes life a little easier. I talk to it alot!

I've upgraded to Gen 2, but the main feature that adds is sleep tracking, which is interesting, but is also a bit of a gimmick (you probably already know when you sleep) Apparently Gen2 has better sound quality, but I doubt you'd notice outside of a side by side test.

Got one of these the other day and it's pretty handy. I have it in my kitchen so that I can instantly watch whatever I want as I cook instead of having to set up a tablet or a laptop. It's also quite handy in doing things like setting timers, following video recipes without having to touch it, and asking it questions about anything while I cook.

Unfortunately, this thing is pure garbage on Youtube. I've spent hours trying to figure out how to play my own videos and playlists with no luck, I can't even get it to show my own channel and I'm logged into the thing. It only seems to know very popular Youtube channels and videos, and even has problems with that.

Getting it to play a YouTube playlist took me hours of fiddling around! But, I got it in the end

All I did was to set up a routine in Google Home, name whatever you will remember when you start it by voice (mine is just named "My YouTube"), In the routine starters it's just "When I say to my Assistant: My YouTube", and in the actions I just have the "Play music" action - within which for the "What music to play?" I have the name of my playlist i.e. "Music - 2"

The playlist name MUST match exactly what you have on YouTube.

It works - bit of a pain if you want a different playlist, but I guess you could set up many routines with matching names to your many playlists.

Alexa is being rubbish at the moment so in the game for a Google switcheroo. Is this just as good as a gen 2 but missing features I don't need. All I need is it to show the front door show media. Don't use for video calls.

Yeah, I’ve got a gen 2 and from reviews I read a while back, gen 2 just has the sleep sensing features and a faster chip (but there’s literally no difference when actually using the thing)

If I didn’t buy a gen 2 last year I’d definitely be getting this

Edit: apparently gen 2 has better sound quality, didn’t know that lol (edited)

I read that Google are ending support for assistant displays, but can't remember if just 3rd parties, or whether also they will end up abandoning their own as well (given they have form with this sort of thing)?

Third party displays are all that I've seen announced.

Has anyone been able to set a radio alarm on these? I have a Lenovo smart clock that runs on Google, which used to be able to do it, but no longer seems to be able to and is also becoming increasingly unreliable.
Was hoping I could use this as a replacement but looks like it can’t play music alarms?

Create a routine, named anything random.
Starter: time is 0657 Monday to Friday.
    Action: Set volume to 5
    Action: Play BBC Radio 4.
    Device for audio: Bedroom speaker

Feel free to customise your preferences! (edited)

I wouldn't even waste your time. I'm on my second and I give up with it. Barely even get it to give me information I need. Takes too long to respond. They're rubbish.

Could this be used to display a website?

Thinking of way to show my internet connected energy monitor's website.

I think the page would need to autorefresh as well though

I replaced all my Echos with these. I found the Echos often misunderstood what I said and also they were not easily compatible with Youtube Music.
I can't think of the last time that the Nest Hubs have misunderstood a command.

Very little, other than a visual bedside clock, or timer countdown. Possibly more useful to have the screen if you use it for cooking recipes. Personally I look at it very rarely other than to check the time, but I do give it verbal commands a lot. It this price you may as well go for the screen.
